Is walking talking Venus Flytrap

Overview
########

  • Mega Mawile has an already decent 105 attack coupled with the ability Huge Power, making it the hardest hitting Pokemon in the game.
  • Has the useful ability intimidate before Mega Evolution to soften physical blows
  • Has two good STABs in Play Rough and Iron Head, and strong priority in Sucker Punch
  • Works very well in Trick Room due to low speed, but works well out of it also.
  • Decent defenses overall help it take hits.
  • Threatened by the many gr ound and fire attacks
  • Has great defensive typing, with 9 resistances and two immunities.
  • Horrendous stats prior to Mega Evolution
  • Hyper Cutter is mildly useful before mega evolving

Bulky Attacker
########
name: Bulky Attacker
move 1: Play Rough
move 2: Sucker Punch
move 3: Iron Head / Substitute / Swords Dance
move 4: Protect
ability: Intimidate / Hyper Cutter
item: Mawilite
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Atk / 40 Def / 36 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Nature: Brave

Moves
========

  • Play Rough is a powerful, decently accurate STAB which decimates dragon, Fighting, and Dark types.
  • Sucker Punch is useful for picking off weakened Pokemon that might be faster (or slower in Trick room).
  • Iron Head is a secondary STAB that hits other fairies, rock, and ice types hard.
  • Protect is a very useful move in doubles, as it lets Mawile's partner attack while moves targetting Mawile will fail.

Set Details
========

  • A faster set with 252 HP / 164 Atk / 92 Spe with 31 Spe IVs and an Adamant nature can be used to outspeed Pokemon such as 0 Spe Tyranitar and Scrafty out side of Trick Room.
  • This set can be used on Trick Room teams and on faster offensive teams to check Trick Room.
  • Choice Specs Rotom-W's Hydro Pump, Heatran's Heat Wave, LO Garchomp's Earthquake, and-1 CB Talonflame's Flare Blitz are all survived with this spread.

Usage Tips
========
  • The purpose of the set is to remove Pokemon that threaten Mawile's team.
  • There are two ways to play Mawile, don't Mega Evolve it immediately and switch in and out to activate Intimidate, saving it until the right conditions, or save Mawile till the end so it can sweep, in which case Hyper Cutter is the better ability. The second way is more of a secondary option and is done best when Trick Room is up and all checks and counters are weakened / removed.
  • Get Trick Room up, helps a lot
  • Really hard to switch into Mawile, even intimidate users take lots of damage switching in on a neutral attack
  • Try to remove Intimidaters and Burning opponents early
  • Timing protect well is useful, because Mawile will often be double targeted.
  • Don't use protect too much under trick room, however

Team Options
========

  • This set works best on Trick room teams or offensive teams looking for a check to Trick room teams.
  • Wide Guard support is useful, because the most common ground and fire-type moves, Heat Wave and Earthquake, are spread moves.
  • Thunder wave and other Forms of speed control is good support for Mawile.
  • Bulky water types and rain teams in general such as Gyarados and Suicune are good partners because they easily remove or force out ground and fire types, while Mawile can switch into grass type moves.
  • Feint users such as Hitmontop are helpful to breaking protect.
  • Trick Room setters such as Jellicent and Cresselia have good synergy.

Other Options
########

  • Fire Fang is an option for hitting Steel-types super effectively.
  • Brick Break could hit Pokemon like Heatran.
  • Swords Dance is a good set-up move, but Mawile hits hard enough and needs all its attacks to sweep.
  • Ice Punch could be useful for Landorus-Therian, a common switch-in.
  • Substitute is useful to block status and get free turns.
  • Outside of these, Mawile has a small useable movepool without many other options.

Checks & Counters
########

**Offensive Typing Advantage**: Pokemon such as Landorus-Therian and Heatran can hit very hard with their STABS. Heatran can switch in on either STAB, and can take a Sucker Punch, while Landorus-Therian can switch in on Iron head or Sucker Punch. Steel types can wall it or set up on Mawile. Mega Charizard y and sun teams in general can easily KO Mawile.

**Attack Control**: Pokemon with Will-O-Wisp and Intimidate users such as Rotom-W and Landorus-Therian are good switch-ins to Mawile. Keep in mind, that burn only cancels out Huge Power, so Mawile's attack will still hit with the force of 105 base Attack. Gyarados is a good intimidating check. Faster users of substitute can play around Sucker Punch and set up for free.

If you run 236 speed (still adamant) with tailwind support it outspeeds even skymin and stuff. Also mentin rock slide for spread move, and that destroys talonfllame ;)

Put this in the correct format!

If you run 236 speed (still adamant) with tailwind support it outspeeds even skymin and stuff. Also mentin rock slide for spread move, and that destroys talonfllame ;)

I want QC opinion on this. I feel like Mawile is too slow to effectively use tailwind, and would much rather function under trick room. running that much speed takes away from its decent bulk.

No imo. Granted Mawile can use (and usually does use) Sucker Punch for priority, losing all that bulk will not be worth it. You are better off with Trick Room or Thunder Wave support. This can be worth an OO mention if you feel the need, but honestly that's up to you and I see very little reason to mention a speedy spread (at least that speedy, anyways).

Overview
  • You fail to mention its great typing, which gives it only two weaknesses in exchange for two immunities and 9 resistances (quad resist on Bug). Seriously, that is one mean typing defensively. The two weaknesses are very common, unfortunately.
  • 50 / 125 / 95 defenses in its Mega Forme aren't too shabby tbh (special defense is definitely high enough to tank neutral hits even), and with all its power you can easily drop some Attack investment in order to gain some more bulk if needed.
  • Intimidate is a great ability to have before Mega Evolving, should be noted here
  • Probably one of its biggest flaws (apart from lacking speed) is those 50 / 85 / 55 defenses it has before Mega Evolving. This means its only going to be able to switch in on resisted attacks (if anything at all) without heavy defensive investment.
Trick Room Sweeper
  • The name of this set is very misleading imo. Having used Mawile quite a bit, I can vouch for the fact that it easily functions fine without Trick Room support (it can work well without any speed control at all, tbh). "Bulky Attacker" is probably a better name for this set.
  • Not so keen on Rock Slide. While it can KO Talonflame, you will take loads of damage from Flare Blitz which really isn't the way you should be playing Mawile (better to keep it alive and healthy so it can eliminate Dark-, Dragon-, Fairy-, and Fighting-types, clean up late game, and switch in on things, which is generally the role it will be playing). Sucker Punch will usually KO Talonflame if it uses Flare Blitz due to recoil anyways. Imo it should be removed from the set and moved to OO.
  • Hyper Cutter should be slashed after Intimidate. It prevents you from being harmed by Intimidate before Mega Evolving and is a good idea if you already have Intimidate on your team and are worried about Defiant Bisharp/Tornadus.
  • The spread is a bit lacking imo. It is better to drop a bit of power for some bulk, since Mawile has more than enough to get OHKOs on Dragon-, Dark-, Fighting-, and Fairy-types with its STABs. A spread I'd recommend is 252 HP / 156 Atk / 40 Def / 60 SpD with a Brave nature. This allows Mawile to always live a Modest Thundurus-T Thunderbolt before Mega-Evolving and a Choice Specs Rotom-W Hydro Pump after Mega Evolving, as well as a LO Garchomp Earthquake after Mega Evolving. It also survives a -1 Choice Band Talonflame Flare Blitz after Mega Evolving (which would have a 6.3% chance to OHKO without any investment into Defense). The benchmarks are pretty situational, but the general idea is to give Mawile some extra bulk so it can utilize all of its resistances more effectively.
Set Details
  • You should mention a faster spread of 252 HP / 164 Atk / 92 Spe with 31 Spe IVs and an Adamant nature here, which beats 0 Spe Tyranitar as well as Scrafty, allowing you to KO them before they can hit you back (particularly useful for TTar as it often carries Fire Blast).
  • In general this section is a bit vague, though the changes above should give you more to add into it (Hyper Cutter vs Intimidate, the more complex EV spread, etc)
Usage Tips
  • Honestly, this set is really meant to eliminate common threats for almost any team. Since Mawile can eliminate common Dragon-, Fairy-, Fighting-, and Dark-types, it can easily switch in on most of these (only worries about some powerful Fighting-types or dual typings) and force the opponent to decide whether to switch out / use Protect or risk falling to a Play Rough or Iron Head. It also is great at cleaning up weakened threats with Sucker Punch late game if needed.
  • Generally, you will be switching Mawile in and out throughout the match as needed to get the above jobs done, or simply hiding it in the back so it can clean up once other members have sufficiently weakened everything. It should be noted that if you are going with the first method (switching around), you may want to avoid Mega Evolving and use Protect when you come in, so that if the opponent switches out (and as such you get your job done) you can switch out as well and then come back in later and reactivate Intimidate, which you can't do if you choose to Mega Evolve right from the get-go. Going for an all out sweep is more or less a secondary option if you are running Trick Room support and counters/checks to Mawile have been eliminated
Team Options
  • Trick Room support may be a solid option, but is by no means required and is not the best option. Mawile actually works better (imo) on faster-paced teams in need of something that can help members switch in and out safely, which Mawile's great typing and solid bulk help accomplish. While moving first with Mawile is appealing, Sucker Punch can always be used if you are in one of those "need to move first" situations.
  • Thunder Wave is another support option, as it effectively slows down the opposition to 25% of their normal speed, allowing even a Brave, 0 Spe IV Mawile to move before things like Latios and Mega Lucario.
  • Some teammates should be noted here. Bulky Water-types (Rotom-W, Politoed, AV Ludicolo, Suicune, Jellicent, Gyarados, etc) are the best as they cover Fire- and Ground-types for Mawile. Mawile can also switch in against Grass-types (at least the few of them w/o Spore/Sleep Powder) that trouble the aforementioned Water-types. There are other teammates for Mawile ofc, and I'll expect you to do some searching for a couple more at the least. Also be sure to mention specific teammates that can offer Trick Room, Thunder Wave, and Wide Guard support.
Other Options
  • [INSERT "Rock Slide" HERE]
  • Taunt can shut down Will-O-Wisp and opposing speed control, which is always nice, while guaranteeing Sucker Punch will land apart from a switch
  • Ice Punch is situational, but it allows you to rip apart Landorus-T, which is a fairly common switch in to Mawile
  • Misty Terrain works like Safeguard for Grounded Pokemon which allows Mawile to avoid burns, and it also weakens Dragon-type attacks which is nice if your team has a lot of trouble with those
  • That's about all that's worth mentioning (including whats already in there)
Checks and Counters

  • You should probably use the sample tags found here.
  • Mention specific Fire- and Ground-types, i.e. Heatran, Landorus-T, etc
  • Mawile hits so hard that it will still deal damage with Intimidate/burn is in effect. Burn basically neuters Huge Power so it still has an effective 105 base Attack when burned (aka hits harder than Jirachi even when burned, lol). Some calcs to demonstrate:
    • 156+ Atk Huge Power burned Mega Mawile Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 237-279 (58.6 - 69%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
    • -1 156+ Atk Huge Power burned Mega Mawile Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Scrafty: 306-360 (91.6 - 107.7%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
    • -1 156+ Atk Huge Power burned Mega Mawile Play Rough vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 205-243 (61.9 - 73.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
    • 156+ Atk Huge Power burned Mega Mawile Play Rough vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Latios: 309-364 (102.3 - 120.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
    • ofc they still help check it, but make sure it is made clear that Mawile is still fairly threatening even with burn/Intimidate in effect
  • Rage Powder / Follow Me users actually don't last long against Mawile. For example:
    • 156+ Atk Huge Power Mega Mawile Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 92 Def Togekiss: 432-510 (115.5 - 136.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
    • 156+ Atk Huge Power Mega Mawile Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Amoonguss: 306-361 (70.8 - 83.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
    • Its worth a small mention for preventing Sucker Punch from landing, but apart from that its not going to do much other than stall Mawile for a turn or two at best
  • Defensively, Mawile struggles to hit Steel-types very hard and has to rely on things like Sucker Punch to hit them. This means things like Scizor and Heatran can usually set up on it.
My opinion is that this skeleton is a bit vague; after you get these changes done lemme know and I'll probably approve it assuming it looks solid.

you didn't edit in a lot of what Nollan said:

my own check

Usage tips:
Mawile can be used to punch holes in bulky Pokemon early game while supporting it's team with intimidate before Mevoing,
Mawile can also perform very good as a late game cleaner on weakened teams after certain Pokemon are removed

Team Options:
Along side bulky Water-types you can mention the fact that Mawile is a fan of rain as it removes her Fire-type weakness.
Cresselia, and other psychic-type mons can safely remove a lot of the intimidate using Pokemon
Amoonguss and other Pokemon that Redirect attacks can be useful.

Other Options:
Brick Break also breaks screens
Substitute can be used to block status while TR is up, as well as force opponents to attack you making it easy to hit them with Sucker Punch

Checks and Counters:
Intimidate

Seriously add what nollan put

•Has the useful ability intimidate before Mega Evolution to soften physical blows
•Useful ability Intimidate before Mega evolution

you have pretty much the exact same point twice...

•Horrendous stats prior to Mega Evolution
I'd mention that this only matters when you're switching in mawile before mega evolving, as otherwise you will most likely be hitting that mega button as soon as possible. You could also link this to the above intimidate point in that it softens the blows that mawile has to take in its relatively weak non mega form

in set details, you should mention how intimidate is helpful, as you only talk about hyper cutter atm. Also, what else do those evs accomplish? Saying that it "hits what it needs to" doesn't tell me anything, and I don't know what the defense evs are for (you gave an example for what the spD evs help survive, an example for def would be good too).

im not so sure about using follow me and rage powder to redirect attacks Mizuhime, as a lot of the attacks that will be targeting mawile are ground and fire moves - the most common of which are earthquake and heat wave. I think wide guard users would be more appreciated, though something like follow me togekiss could be good for redirecting earth power or will-o-wisp
edit: in team options^

ok here are some suggestions Ultimathunder:
  • remove hyper cutter ability slash. should be oo or something, it's not a terrible ability per se but intimidate is just so much better and is the standard on mawile so it really shouldn't be slashed. defiant tornadus is nonexistent now too and bisharp isnt common enough to warrant a slash. Nollan can comment if he disagrees but those are my thoughts.
  • Just use 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef. In general you aren't keepin Mawile in on like a Thundurus-T or anything so the extra power will be much more useful for you than the bulk. Feel free to mention those spreads somewhere but the more basic spread should be the main one mentioned.
  • add substitute to oo like mizuhime said
  • for the 2nd point in usage tips, hyper cutter still isnt much of a better option for the reasons i listed

I'm fine with removing the slash, but should be in Set Details at least imo.

Now this I disagree with. While the benchmarks (as I mentioned) aren't all that appealing, the extra bulk means you will be able to switch in to resisted attacks (which you will be doing a lot imo) longer (Audiosurfer and myself will probably discuss this and come to some sort of agreement on what to do).

Ultimathunder, the QC talked and we agreed with the spread 252 HP / 180 Atk / 40 Def / 36 SpD. We moved some EVs from SpD into Atk, because surviving Modest Thundurus-T's Thunderbolt in Mawile's regular form was not practical. We gave it enough bulk to survive the following:

- Choice Specs Rotom-W's Hydro Pump
- Heatran's Heat Wave
- LO Garchomp's Earthquake
- -1 CB Talonflame's Flare Blitz

specifically mention how mawile lives those moves in its mega form ONLY. also specifically mention scizor and ferrothorn when talking about fire fang because usually when you run fire fang and not iron head, it's because you don't have room for more checks to those two. i think rock slide/stone edge are worth mentioning for similar reasons (charizard/firebird) and brick break should just be taken off completely since you're sure as hell not ohkoing heatran, which is something you need to do if you're trying to justify running a niche option like fire fang.

in team options, why the hell is trick room not mentioned or am i just missing it
taunt/feint should go here too to help mawile do its job (taunt also doubles as a way to ensure sucker punch)

Overview
  • Also mention Hyper Cutter as a useful ability to have before Mega Evolving.
Set
  • Slash Swords Dance behind Iron Head imo. It makes the lategame sweep much easier, especially in Trick Room, and not much can take a +2 Sucker Punch.
Moves
  • Play Rough really hurts anything that does not resist it, not only Fighting- and Dark-types.
Set Comments
  • Put Brick Break in here. Its really nice to have an option against Heatran and Ferrothorn.
Usage Tips
  • I wouldn't say that Mawile is supposed to eliminate Pokemon that threaten its team. It is supposed to smash the opposing team on its own, wielding a might Play Rough that punches holes in practically anything.
  • If using it, GET TRICK ROOM UP
  • Mention that it is really hard to switch in Mawile if it hasn't mega evolved yet, as even -1 Pokemon will take out a huge chunk of its health. This means that Mawile can only reliably come in after a partner has fainted or a slow Pokemon pivots it in.
  • Try not to use Protect inside Trick Room, it needs all of the turns it can to attack.
  • Mention that it works as a lead, Mega Evolving early so it can switch around more often.
  • Try to take out the opposing Burning and Intimidating foes early.
  • Mawile is often the victim of double-targeting because of the pressure it puts on the opponent, so if it is outside Trick Room, some nicely-timed Protects do wonders.
Team Options
  • Add Feint users like Lucariojr suggested.
  • Follow Me / Rage Powder users make its job of setting up or smashing much easier.
  • Steel-type killers are great to help it sweep. Landorus-T, Hitmontop, Conkeldurr, and Heatran are all good partners at doing so. Landoge and Top also wield a nice Intimidate.
  • Helping Hand users let Mawile smash through even most resists.
  • LIST TRICK ROOM SETTERS THAT SYNERGIZE WITH IT!
  • Rain teams tend to smash Steel-, Ground-, and Fire-types that threaten Mawile and rain also weakens Mawile's Fire-type weakness.
Checks and Counters
  • Steel-types such as Scizor and Ferrothorn can also wall/setup on Mawile.
  • Gyarados is also a good intimidating check
  • Mega Charizard Y and other Fire-types rek it.
Do these and i will stamp Ultimathunder

You missed these.

Also be way more thorough with some of your points before I stamp this. Because these skeletons are gonna go onsite before they are written up, use complete sentences, capitalize all Pokemon names and moves, and use careful grammar before I stamp.

Team Options:
  • Cresselia and Jellicent are Trick Room setters :P
Checks and Counters:
  • Rotom-W is not a safe switch in. It can just burn Mawile if it is already in or a partner has fainted.
  • Faster Pokemon with Substitute can play around Sucker Punch.

once you do that this has been checked alot. only thing is move substitute behind iron head as a slash. as SPL shows (and from my own experiences) sub is a great move on mawile, so it deserves a slash on the set.

implement these + lolk's stuff for your first check: QC 1/3

In checks and counter, I think something about Ferrothorn and other defensive Pokemon deserves a mention, Though Mawile can hit extremely hard it just can't touch some Pokemon, like Ferrothorn or even Mega Scizor without carrying Fire Fang. the latter will set up at the same time. Other than that it seems that you have everything covered so

bsqgPmm.gif

(QC APPROVED 2/3)

Ultimathunder go ahead and write this up :)

When this gets written up, you need to mention what the EV spread accomplishes unless it's not a 252 / 252 / 4 spread. In other words, why are there the Def and SDef EVs? Pocket's post has that

Ultimathunder any idea when this is gonna get written up? I'm pretty sure you're doing exams atm but I've got people asking to take this over so if you could at least start doing a little bit if possible :>
