Gen 4 Me & the Boys team (Banded Tar + Subperior)

ME AND THE BOYS TEAM
Team: https://pokepast.es/a553f64c9a47e27d

A while back, I was surfing over the web when I had an epiphany to binge watch some of FSG’s “How good was this Pokemon actually?!” videos when I rewatched a remake of a video essay about Rhydon/Rhyperior. As evident by the vid during the DPP analysis on Rhyperior did BKC (Yes, he’s the writer of the vid) mention the combination of CB T-Tar + SubPerior combo.

Another influence dawned on me when innovating a new team was Gazpacho’s RoA on Rhyperior, I even added in a comment on a few proposed changes to consider.

Without further a due, let’s review:

1740108911441.png

Zapdos (Leftovers)
Bold Nature
248 HP/228 Def/32 Spd
-Thunderbolt/Discharge
-Roost
-HP Grass/Ice
-U Turn/Thunder Wave

We can’t have a paraspamming team without Zapdos, the legendary bird found in, the power plant of Kanto for so long has partnered with Machamp; exiled to the land of Ubers for his confusion spamming crimes.

Zapdos’s excellent typing provides solid defense against fighters, Gyarados, & ground immunity. Zapdos’s options on movesets depends if Zap offers pivoting utility with Discharge or spread paralysis to any Pokemon that isn’t Ground.

HP Ice is important on discouraging Flygon, Dragonite, or Gliscor from giving you trouble. I prefer HP Grass since there isn’t a Pokemon that could reliably eliminate Swampert. Zapdos does encourage Swampert only to get surprised with HP Grass.

Now with a Flying type on our team, we need a reliable spinner such as:
1740109539358.png

Starmie (Leftovers)
Timid nature
252 HP/40 Def/216 Spd
-Surf
-Thunder Wave
-Recover
-Rapid Spin

Starmie is arguably the best spinner of DPP OU, which is overall mixed due to Starmie’s issues being T-Tar food (& Scizor) & the overwhelming checklist on passive damage; sand & entry hazards be damned.

I’d advise not using Starmie so foolhardy, be smart using Starmie & only Rapid Spin IF you have the opportunity. Remember that Starmie has plenty of tricks to dissuade Tyranitar from simply pursuiting for fear Starmie could stay in.

1740109937308.png

Empoleon (Leftovers)
Calm nature
252 HP/252 Sp Def/4 Spd
-Surf
-Protect
-Knock Off
-Stealth Rocks

“Wait a minute, this is a paraspamming team, shouldn’t there be a Jirachi?!”

Yes, Jirachi can theoretically work on paraspamming teams bc of Serene grace. However, Excal argued amidst the Machamp crusade, pointed out that Jirachi is insufficient on Paraspamming teams bc you’d have a harder time dealing with the opposing Jirachi’s Iron head spam. It doesn’t help that the combination of Rhyperior & Tyranitar stacks water weakness on my team, even a weak Surf is enough to wash my house of cards.

Empoleon’s main duty is to provide my team with a Steel backbone, as any standard team should run in OU since ADV. The power of Knock off enables that bulky waters such as Suicune & Milotic will be worn down by Sand periodically. Protect is needed since my team has no Wishpasser, so Empoleon needs Protect to passively recover. Stealth Rocks are available to provide chip damage.

1740110639185.png

Rhyperior (Leftovers)
Adamant nature
136 HP/208 Atk/164 Spd
-Stone Edge
-Earthquake
-Ice Punch
-Substitute

The star of the theme team & the epitome of power, Rhyperior is back in OU as tribute to when he was a young lieutenant Rhydon serving in the Kanto civil war of OU!

Rhyperior is a tricky Pokemon to squeeze, though Rhyperior’s gifts via movepool & Solid Rock is a delight, Rhyperior is plagued with a cursed typing & a middling Special defense.

Simply put, Rhyperior is a very straightforward Pokemon demanding an army of 5 others to assist him for battle. Sand is a necessity to patch up Rhyperior’s short end of his defense. Rhyperior’s rewards players with his offensive firepower, but will pay should they misuse or even 1 member doesn’t contribute. (Cough, Laurel’s Hera/Perior team, cough)

1740111438004.png

Tyranitar (Choice Band)
Adamant nature
180 HP/252 ATK/76 Spd
-Stone edge
-Crunch
-Pursuit
-Superpower

The Tyrannus Tenebrosus who preys on Spirits & Psychics is back with a vengence, this time to aid his Rock Golem kin with his endless sand for defense.

Banded Tyranitar provides an overwhelming firepower against the likes of Skarmory & other physical bulky threats that can wall on Rhyperior for days. As a pursuitor, it is best advised you take the life of your victim so long as you’re able to get away with it. Tar also provides some defense against Heatran, mainly Specs ran, from punching holes onto your team.

1740112379108.png

Latias (Choice Scarf)
Timid Nature
204 Hp/124 Sp Atk/180 Spd
-Draco Meteor
-Thunderbolt
-Trick
-Recover

The Queen of all Dragons in DPP OU is Latias herself, this time serving as the speed check for my team to prevent Dragon Dancers from rampaging my team.

The spread here is to provide a bit of defense as Healing Wish is rather mixed due to DPP mechanics, rather Latias can instead trick slower teams & can run Recover in late game scenarios.

Latias complements this team well in order to keep Gyara & Dragonite at bay, since Zap can be worn down easily given the Sand & Rocks.

Threats:
1740113075161.png
1740113113476.png
1740113162774.png

Bulky Waters: Milotic by far is the scariest match up should you run a Rhyperior team, she can switch into Rhyperior’s stabs with aplomb & can spam Recover in your face. SubCune is also dangerous unless if Empoleon knocks off the lefties on the switch. Swampert is by far the least scary, but the lack of Celebi means you need to rely on Zap for HP Grass. Best case for both Milo & Cune is to use Empo for Knock off. Try to double switch on the Pert as Pert can be worn down enough for Tar to finish off with a Crunch.

1740113503815.png

Gengar: Specifically SubGengar is a stuff of nightmares that you need to play around arduously to make progress, best case is using Empo to stall out Gar’s Focus Blast & not send Tar in recklessly.

1740113648796.png

Bronzong: Bronzong can set up Rocks to clip Zap’s wings & can Explode to punch holes in your defensive core. Try to wear it down with Banded Tar or make aggressive reads if possible.

1740113893512.png
1740113934558.png

Mixed Dragons:
Once again, make hard reads, find openings from your opponents, & weigh your options in when making mid plays. Although Flygon is much scarier to deal due to the sheer unpredictability on wether it’s Scarf or Mixed.

1740114080289.png

Abomasnow:
An underrated threat on this list, Abomasnow can interrupt Tyranitar’s sand with Hail, affecting even Steels such as Empoleon from recovery. The combination on Wood Hammer & Leech Seed can disorient my team.

T-Spikes:

Just try to play around them, get rid of it if possible lol

Video on my team against a 1317 Elo player with Roserade team:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen4ou-2304855851-u7a6j3sbv0qwpguxqy7d6oqavbmxhvepw?p2

EDIT: I changed Latias to Utility Celebi, realizing that Latias exposes me more towards Tyranitar.

Hey Jhall,
This is a cool team you've got. I always like to see Rhyperior used in DPP OU. Here are some of the ideas I had:
:Latias:
@ Choice Scarf
Timid Nature
88 HP | 104 Def | 136 Spa | 182 Spee
Draco, T-Wave, Trick, HWish/Recover
For the Latias version of the team, my first suggestion is putting Latias in the Lead slot because I feel Zapdos is too important of a defensive piece to put in a perilous position. The evs I've suggested mean you have a guaranteed OKHO on 76 HP Loom, and a 93.7% chance to live Scarf Tar's Crunch + Sand while hitting 331 speed. If you don't care about OHKO Loom, feel free to redistribute the evs as you see fit. I also think HWish is nice to have because CB Tar can get battered taking Tbolts and Dracos from Rotom and Latias.
:Empoleon:
Protect -> Roar
I suggest putting Roar here to get Rocks chip on the waters that threaten your team and to phaze out Sub users(like Gar).
:Zapdos:
Thunderbolt -> Discharge
Thunder Wave -> Heat Wave, U-Turn, Roar
I think you should run Discharge over TBolt to free up a moveslot on Zapdos. Heat Wave puts more pressure on the Steels, U-turn lets you maintain momentum, and I suggest trying Roar here if you don't want it on Empoleon. You could even run Protect to scout Choice-locked-mons and block Explosion, or Toxic to hit the Grounds, Lati, and Rotom.
:Starmie:
Surf -> Psychic
You could consider Psychic on Starmie to get the OHKO on Loom and Gar, and to do more damage to the bulky waters that you mentioned threaten the team. This isn't super necessary as I can understand you wanting to be able to threaten Tran and the bulky Grounds.
:Tyranitar:
You could tweak the Tar Evs to get some more speed. Some spreads are;
176 HP | 248 Att | 84 Spe and 144 HP | 232 Att | 132 Spe.
The first one hits 179 Speed, putting you at the high-end of this crowded speed tier. The second one lets you outrun SpD Tran.

Also, what's your Celebi's moveset?

The 252 HP/220 DEF/36 Spd T-wave Celebi with HP Fire

380.png

Latias (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 212 HP / 112 SpA / 4 SpD / 180 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Thunderbolt
- Trick
- Recover / TWave / HWish

I have put this as another suggestion in the Latias set. Personally, I think 180 in speed is fine, as you far outperform DD Gyarados and nite. And if you use Trick, you're left with 331 (you outperform mix nape or Flygon no Scarf). I put 112 in SpA because you kill Gyarados (not Wacan Berry) + nite, which are always common threats. 212 in HP because that's what was left over... Plus, you can withstand Scarf ttar's Crunch + sand damage.

If Breloom really is a threat, the idea of Psychic Starmie is fine with me, but not for Surf. Moreover, there is the option of HPump, which is 2hko to Scarf ttar or DD ttar(Scarf Rotom as well). Psychic I would add it for TWave, although I understand the team relies on that as a strategy.

Celebi seems to me a key pokemon in these teams, especially with Rhyperior.

Good team, by the way.

One idea is to replace Starmie with Roserade:

500px-0407Roserade.png

Roserade @ Black Sludge
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 44 Def / 188 SpD / 24 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic Spikes
- Energy Ball
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Stun Spore / Extrasensory

I think this can be beneficial since it can easily switch in on bulky waters you say you struggle with and set up Toxic Spikes which will hamper them greatly. For example if they switch in on Rhyperior with a Sub up, Rhyperior can resub after the Surf a few times to rack up some residual damage before finishing off with one of his moves. Also Toxic Spikes helps a lot against Abomasnow as the common Leech Seed set hates it. I opted for the specially defensive version since it can more easily set up on bulky water Ice Beams, as well is a solid answer to Gengar that you said you have issues with. I offered Extrasensory as a move since it can help KO Gengars faster, however Stun Spore is useful as well since your main sweepers are so slow.

The main thing you lose is a spinner, however Roserade can still absorb opposing Toxic Spikes so that's a plus. However if you still really want a spinner perhaps replacing Empoleon with Forretress could work. Since Roserade deals with bulky waters well, Empoleon's Knock Off utility is a lot less needed. Forretress also can help with some of the Mix Dragons you have an issue with. Meaning it can switch into predicted Outrages and potentially spin, set-up hazards, or even boom. Also Forretress can set-up on Bronzongs with impunity.

Also I think Healing Wish is more valuable than Trick on Latias, just because you can restore Rhyperior or Tyranitar late game.

Don’t mixed Dragons carry Fire Blast? (Or flamethrower for Dragonite, Flygon’s too weak)

I have been experimenting Tentacruel with Jirachi as Wish support, but the Roserade is an interesting offer!

If you run Roserade you probably want to run either not Empoleon, or HP Ice on Zapdos, otherwise you're relying on a choice locked Draco meteor to deal with Breloom

Why not try Rock Blast on Rhyperior? It's generally more reliable than and breaks the Substitutes of Gengar and gets damage on it.
