XY UU Meet the Fabio Flinstones! (M. Ampharos based team)

What is the Best UU Mega?

Today I'll showcasing one of the most versatile UU megas. Ampharos. Trick Room, Agility, all-out-attacker, these are just some of the ways you can run this interesting mon. With a large special movepool and a massive special attack stat, I decided to run it for myself. The Smogon Agility set caught my eye, so I decided to try it out. So far my Win:Lose ratio is very high, I don't have proof since I dropped rapidly right after, but I peaked at around 1350. I still think I could use some help with this team though, so here it is.

Right from the start, I knew who Ampharos' partner would be. Empoleon resits every type Amp is weak to, except ground obviously. A 4x resistance to ice is appreciated on any team as well. In addition to this, Empoleon sets up SR so Amp can get some valuable OHKOs and sweep late game after getting an agility.

Right of the BAT (see what I did there?), I knew Cro would work well with these too. Having very nice offensive synergy with Amp and also taking care of my current ground weakness, I decided to throw him on there.

I decided to create a FSD core and who better to fill those shoes than UU's premier fairy type? Having great special bulk and being able to cure annoying status (which this team doesn't enjoy), Florges is on most of my teams for a reason.

My team was now looking a little lacking on the offensive side, and no priority to speak of. Using the best hand-job you'll ever have Ambipom as glue seemed like a great idea. He also gets access to U-Turn along with Cro, so i can pivot into my walls or another sweeper if need be. One more thing, Knock Off spam is obligatory.

I put Zam on here. I'm not exaggerating when I say, the day after I created this team he was banned. Not even 24 hours. So I needed a replacement quickly. I decided to try something new and interesting.

I decided to try out offensive Azelf. Most people would rather watch this thing toss pointy rocks with its bare hands and explode but they're cruel. He also gets access to U-Turn so I will almost always have a way to pivot when I need it. Anyone else think it's head looks like male genitalia?

Timid Nature Modest Nature
- Agility Volt-Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Dragon Pulse
- Focus Blast
The Ampharos agility set copy-pasted right off of Smogon. There is a reason it's on there though, as this set is potentially devastating. Out-speeding most of the unboosted tier after an Agility and having 3 attacks that give it perfect neutral coverage, it's a very effective late-game cleaner. Also DAT HAIR. EDIT: I changed Fabio's set to all-out attacker at the recommendation of Chamaeleon. It's much more effective since Amp rarely sets up Agility and would rather have the extra bulk and power that this set provides.

Happy Feet (Empoleon) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Protect Roar
- Scald
This is a very different set for Empoleon. Using it as a physical wall may seem odd, but it's necessary since Florges completely takes care of special defense. SR is obvious, since it helps my sweepers pick up some OHKO's. Toxic+Protect is a classic combo, as well as scouting and giving some Leftovers recovery which Empoleon needs at times. Scald can give the gift of burns to my opponent and help increase my physical defense. EDIT: Swapping Protect with Roar will help the team deal with CroCune better. Thanks to Chamaeleon for the suggestion.

Ben Affleck (Crobat) (M) @ Choice Band
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Cross Poison
- U-turn
- Defog
This is another set taken off Smogon :/. It's still a very good set, mostly for BBird spam and snagging some momentum with U-Turn. Defog is on there for removing hazards once Cro stops being useful. 4 S. Def EVs mean the Porygons will get no Download boost. Also, Ben Affleck will make a great Batman so this set rarely fails me.

Blssey 2.0 (Florges) (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 4SpA / 252 SpD 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD
Calm Nature
- Wish
- Aromatherapy
- Protect
- Moonblast
The team's special wall/cleric that completes my FSD core, Florges is tacked on mostly to torture my opponent and make them miserable to heal status and take hits Empoleon can't handle. Maximizing special bulk means that this thing can switch into any special hit with ease. Plus, this thing is a chore to fight so maybe my opp will just click forfeit. EDIT: Thanks again to Chamaeleon for the improved EV spread.

Excellent Hand-J (Ambipom) @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Return
- Knock Off
- U-turn
Ambipom is the glue that rounds out my offensive synergy with Cro and Amp, as well as adding another U-Turn user to my total. Fake Out provides priority which this team lacked until now, Return is the STAB of choice for every normal type. Knock Off is always good and U-Turn can gain some momentum early-game. Once again, 4 S. Def EVs will prevent Download users from getting a boost. This is yet another set taken off Smogon JS.

Beardy OP (Alakazam) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Magic Guard

Dick Head II (Azelf) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Psychic
- U-turn
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball
This is quite a different Azelf set that, I assure you, can not be found in the SmogDex (FINALLY!). A Modest nature is used since at 329 speed, it still outspeeds most scarf users in the tier. Psychic is chosen over Psyshock since it didn't seem necessary to worry about special walls when I could always U-Turn out. Shadow Ball is for those dern ghost-types, and Energy Ball is for Swampert, whom this team struggles with. Please don't ask who Dick Head the first was, it's a long, boring story.

473.png
MAMOSWINE- This is unfortunate. As I said earlier, 1 day after I made this team, the tier shift happened and UU got dumped with this thing. Able to destroy pre-Agility Amp, as well as most of my team simply with its brutal STABs, this is one threat that no one can say I overlooked, since he wasn't in the tier when I made this team. >:(

245.png
CROCUNE- One CM, and it becomes hard to stop. 2, and I might as well click forfeit. It was silly of me to overlook this thing during team building, especially with how common it is now thanks to Mamo's introduction. Although Empoleon can stop this thing from beating my whole team, as long as it hasn't fainted yet.

244.png
ENTEI- Yet another legendary Doge that can have fun with my team, nothing wants to take a banded Flare Blitz on my team, not to mention it's more common coverage moves, Stone Edge, ESpeed and Bulldoze, all can put dents in my walls and flat out OHKO my sweepers. The best I can hope for when it comes in to clean late-game is that it kills itself with recoil.

448.png
ESpeed+SD Lucario- This thing has swept me multiple times. Anything on my team that isn't OHKO'd by Life Orb'd ESpeed at +2 gets outsped and raped by Close Combat. If my opp preserves this thing until late in the game, I can only hope it will lower its defenses so much that Ambi can chunk with Fake Out.

Hey, looks like a fun team. Here are some suggestions:

Snorlax > Ambipom.

Ambipom just doesn't work well in UU. By adding snorlax, you resist Entei and one of Mamos STABS due to Thick Fat. Having a CurseLax set gives you a chance to set up on certain mons like Suicune and Entei without having to worry about burns because of Rest removing the burnt status. Also, you have a cleric, florges, which can also remove the status off of Snorlax, whether it is asleep or burnt.

252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD on Florges

The given EVs significantly boost Florges's Defense, allowing it to take physical Fighting- and Dark-type attacks well. The Special Defense investment and a Calm nature are used to retain Florges's massive special bulk. With Defensive bulk, you can take on Krookodile a little better than before.

Use the following set below for Crobat.

Banded Crobat seems like fun, but being locked into Defog isn't helpful support wise. Crobat is also can be weakened easily through Stealth Rock damage and having Roost on it helps it live a little longer. Having Sky Plate Bat hits very hard, like banded bat, but allows bat to still provide team support, which yours need.

Roar > Protect on Empoleon

As you mentioned, Suicune is a problem for you and by adding a phazing move like roar, you can prevent further set up.

Use the suggest Amphy set below.

Sadly, Amphy doesn't get a low of chances to agility, and even then its still relatively slow. Amphy should focus more on being a bulky attackers rather than a set up sweeper. Also, know that Amphy has Volt Switch, you can easily gain momentum back from Snorlax.

y

y the weird EV spread?

Curselax's 144 HP / 188 Def EV investment is meant to turn it into a sponge against physical hits after a Curse, as well as let it survive a High Jump Kick from Choice Scarf Mienshao at +2. The remaining 176 Special Defense EVs and a Careful nature allow Curselax to also survive a 2HKO from Mega Blastoise's Aura Sphere. The mixed defensive spread is designed to take on countless other threats

After a bit of team-testing, I decided to take some of your suggestions. Ampharos rarely sets up Agility, and even when he does, it usually isn't a game-changer. So I went with your all-out attacker spread. As for Emp, I swapped Protect for Roar simply to deal with CroCune. This calc should explain my reasoning:
\+6 4 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Empoleon: 156-184 (41.9 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Since Empoleon can't take fighting type moves well, making Florges more defensive seemed ideal, so I took your advice on that as well. However, swapping Ambi means losing priority and a lot of offensive presence. I'll have to rely on Ampharos' newly acquired bulk to take fire moves and as for Mamo, I'll just wait for it to get banned lol. Crobat's set has a very noticeable drop in power, and Defog is only on there for when Cro stops being useful but hazards (mostly web) need to be removed. For these reasons, Cro and Ambi will stay the same, but thank you very much for your other suggestions, I believe they truly do improve the team as a whole!

I have an alternate suggestion over Snorlax, which I feel is a good replacement but don't switch it if you don't want to. Instead, try life orb Mienshao over ambipom. What you get is a STAB HJK over return, which really makes all the difference. The fact is, ambipom is pretty terrible and switching to Mienshao gives you a much more threatening stab. Sorry I can't drop the set since I'm on mobile, but you could run the exact same moves and EVs just with HJK over return and regenerator over technician. Alternately, you could run scarf Mienshao and free up Azelf's slot for LO attacker or something, but this is the easiest direct replacement of a fairly awful mon

ill test that out and see how it works, i forgot mienshao was a thing lol

Although Mienshao seems to be a good fit, I think I'll stick to my guns and fight for Ambipom. Ambipom's normal typing gives it an immunity to ghost, which helps my team deal with Chandleure much easier, both scarf and CM. Ambipom's speed tier also allows it to revenge kill faster threats, mostly Espeon, whom Azelf struggles to kill with Shadow Ball thanks to Esp's high special defense. And TBH, although Ambi isn't that good I want to use it simply because I really like it and it rarely fails me in battles. I hope you'll understand my reasoning.
