ORAS OU Mega Altaria Team

I wanted to build a team based around my favorite Pokémon: Altaria and Absol. That's kind of it for the general overview of my team, I'm sorry I don't have much to say here.

Gengar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 28 HP/148 SAtk/80 SDef/252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Shadow Ball
- Will-o-Wisp
- Taunt

I chose Gengar because I really didn't have many other possibilities for leads. Gengar is that lead. It can cripple physical attackers with Will-o-Wisp and can Taunt Pokémon with entry hazards or Pokémon setting up.

Absol @ Life Orb
Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Night Slash
- Psycho Cut
- Swords Dance

Absol is my other favorite Pokémon, so that's why it's here. It's mainly a revenge killer, but it can stay in and set up sometimes. Sucker Punch is for revenge, because it's priority. Swords Dance enables the possibility of sweeping with Sucker Punch, Night Slash and Psycho Cut.

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Body Slam
- U-turn
- Fire Punch

Jirachi is a counter for the steel and fairy types that hit Mega Altaria and Absol hard, as well as an Ice counter. It's mainly a safe switch-in against Pokémon that ruin Altaria and Absol. Iron Head slams fairy and ice types, Body Slam is a safe, reliable move, U-Turn is to switch back out after the threat is gone, and Fire Punch can hit steel and ice types.

Tyranitar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Earthquake
- Crunch
- Stone Edge
- Iron Head

I needed a tank on my team, since all of the other Pokémon are fairly frail. Tyranitar serves as that tank, with maximum Defense and HP EVs and Assault Vest. Earthquake is for dealing with electric types, Crunch for ghost types, Stone Edge is powerful STAB and can deal with Talonflames and such, and Iron Head for coverage.

Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 88 HP/220 Atk/4 Def/196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Bounce
- Outrage

So Gyarados is the main offense of the team. It is purely a sweeper, with lots of speed and a Jolly nature to outspeed lots of other Pokémon. It's a classic sweeping set: Dragon Dance for setting up, Waterfall for STAB, Bounce for coverage, and Outrage is pure power.

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure (Pixilate)
EVs: 56 HP / 194 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Heal Bell
- Earthquake
- Return
- Roost

Okay, Altaria is the Mega Evolution on my team and the Pokémon that I've built this team around. It's mainly just a physical attacker but it can serve a cleric role as well. It can also get rid of the Fire and Dark types that can give Jirachi trouble. It has Return for a STAB fairy move, Earthquake to hit the fire types, Heal Bell because my team is really vulnerable to statuses (except for Jirachi), and Roost for, well, recovery.

Hi, seems like a fun team to mess around with! A few things:

Not sure why you're running such a weird spread with Gengar atm, it would be nice if you could explain your reasoning behind not running a fully offensive spread.

Absol is a pretty gimmicky Pokemon, especially in OU, so not much to say about it considering your team is built around it. Perhaps consider running Knock Off over Night Slash. Despite not having the increased crit rate, being able to remove opposing Pokemon's items on a switch can be really helpful.

I haven't used Jirachi that much to be honest, but your set seems a little bit strange. I would slap on a Choice Scarf and run Jolly instead, as you don't really have anything for fast sweepers. If you want a slower build that can give you slow U-Turns, consider a Specially Defensive build instead.

First thing about Tyranitar. NEVER use Assault Vest. You are essentially wasting it's potential. You can't set up Stealth Rocks, nor can you run a DD sweeping set. Consider running a Careful/Sassy Support set without Assault Vest. This can allow you to set up SR, switch into Lati twins decently well with Sand up and Pursuit trap them. With Sand up Tyranitar already has decent SpDef. The extra Def EVs are not going to save you from STAB Fighting moves, which are super common in the current OU meta.

Gyarados doesn't need Outrage, swap it for Substitute, which will help you a lot when setting up your Bounce combo. Also a little explanation for your EV spread would be nice.

Hm... this is the first real team I've made since getting into the competitive game, so I appreciate your advice and constructive criticism! Yeah, I know that the EVs are a bit weird, I haven't completely worked them out yet.

I wanted Gengar to be a bit more bulky so he can taunt safely.

For Jirachi, I assume you mean Choice Band. I guess it would be more beneficial to have some speed because Jirachi got outsped a lot in my testing.

I appreciate the advice about Tyranitar!

Yeah, Outrage was a bit silly of me to put on Gyarados. I wanted Gyarados to be a bit bulkier with the HP EVs so it can take maybe one more hit. I also meant to put Moxie instead of Intimidate.

Haha no worries, I'm still a fledging team builder myself.

With regards to your taunting Gengar, I just feel that your EVs are sort of wasted in a bulkier build. Now I'm not sure, and maybe you could run some calcs, but I can't think of any relevant Pokemon Gengar would be taunting that your EV spread will allow your Gengar to survive. Bulkier mons you can easily sub on anyway. Again some relevant calcs would really help clear things up.

Definitely Choice Scarf not Choice Band for Jirachi, you don't really need the extra power cause Jirachi spreads hax like no tomorrow. You do need the speed to check Scarfed mons that can punch holes through your team.

Your Gyarados appears to be fully offensive now. I would remove Sub and replace with Stone Edge for better coverage, and replace Leftovers for something like Life Orb or Lum Berry so you can absorb status and set up. If you want the bulkier build, your old spread is probably better; just replace Outrage with Substitute.

Yeah, Gengar would be OHKO or 2HKO'd by anything substantial... I modified it to max out on Speed and Sp. atk instead.

I'm sorry, I mixed up Scarf and Specs XD Yeah, Scarf could work well, better than the band because I'd usually only be using super effective moves anyway.

Sounds good, let me know if you need help testing your team and we can have some practice battles on Showdown or something.
