I've been using the same old UU team for so long now. It has worked pretty well, but I really think it's time for a change. So I started building a new team. I've made adjustments where I saw there was a weakness, but I still feel like it could be better. Let me know what you guys think! constructive criticism is always welcome and appreciated!
The Mega:
Pidgeot-Mega @ Pidgeotite
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Heat Wave
- Roost
- U-turn
Normally when building a team I like to pick a mega that I want to use and build around that Pokemon. For this team, I decided to go with Pidgeot! This is the standard Pidgeot set. Nothing too unique here. Hurricane as the main STAB move which packs a crazy punch, Heat Wave for coverage, Roost for longevity, and U-Turn to keep up with that momentum. The only difference between this and most Pidgeots is that I'm using a hasty nature instead of timid for as much damage from U-Turn as I can get. But coming off of a base 80 attack might not be worth it... I'm not too sure. Then again, Pidgeot is not entirely bulky, so I don't think it suffers too much from the slightly reduced bulk from a hasty nature.
Putting the VOLT in VoltTurn:
Heliolisk @ Choice Specs
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Surf
-Grass Knot Hyper Voice
I'm a huge fan of the VoltTurn combo, so with Pidgeot packing U-Turn my next addition needed to be a fast electric type. Helioisk is one of my favorite Pokemon to be introduced in 6th gen. Good speed, hits fairly hard (especially with the specs set), a collection of good abilities, and a great move pool. Ultimately I chose Helioisk over Jolteon because of how prominent CroCune is in UU, and this set is a hard counter to it. Volt Switch for that VoltTurn combo, T-bolt for a stronger electric attack, Grass Knot solely to catch unexpected Swamperts on the switch, and Surf to hit other ground types without relying on Hidden Power. Like I said, Helioisk has a lot of options for viable moves, so if you have any suggestions for moves that may work better I'd love to hear!
The Physical Wall:
Chesnaught @ Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Leech Seed
- Drain Punch
- Spiky Shield
-Seed Bomb Spikes
Another favorite of mine from the 6th Gen. I remember back when the X&Y trailer first came out. As soon as I saw the three starters I KNEW I was choosing Chespin. Then he turned into this beast and as it turns out he is a hell of a defensive wall. Leech Seed is a great option for Chesnaught to supply it with some passive recovery as well as put in some chip damage on opponents. Spikey Shield to prolong seed recovery and potentially get some more chip damage as well. Drain Punch (thank god for ORAS tutors) has been a godsend for Chesnaught. It gives it a great fighting STAB as well as additional recovery. Finally, I could not decide between Seed Bomb or Spikes, but I eventually settled with Seed Bomb to hit bulky water types. Spikes sounded appealing, but since I'm running Defog on this team over Rapid Spin I decided it would not be worth it to set up so many layers to just Defog them away later on. EDIT: LOL JK I was convinced to go with Spikes after all
Speaking of Defog...:
Empoleon @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
-Toxic Roar
- Stealth Rock
- Defog
Originally Swampert, I decided to use Empoleon instead because I did not like using Defog on Pidgeot. Empoleon has great defensive synergy with Chesnaught. Together they make a great defensive core. Empoleon's job is to spread statuses, set rocks, and keep rocks away from Pidgeot. It can switch into toxics and several type attacks that were a problem for the team. Overall Empoleon has been an invaluable asset to the team.
Rounding out the defensive core:
Cresselia (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Moonlight
- Psyshock
- Moonblast
Looking at the team, I noticed I didn't really have a good fighting type switch in. So the Bulk Queen herself was a natural fit as a mixed wall/special tank. She can sponge several hits, set up a few Calm Minds, and make a few dents in the opposing team. Psyshock is to get through special walls and provide a good STAB move while Moonblast hits dark types that threaten Cress while also providing good all around coverage. Finally, Moonlight is there is heal Cress back up. The 16 speed EVs are recommended by Smogon to outspeed uninvested base 85s like Suicune.
The Wall-Breaker:
Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Ice Punch
- Crunch
Looking at this team, I noticed it lacked pure power. I had yet to try out Sheer Force 'Gatr, so I thought this would be a good team to try it out on. And let me say: it's an absolute monster. For example, at +1, this a Waterfall from this thing is a guaranteed OHKO against physically defensive Florges after rocks. The idea is to force a switch, set up a DD, and click the appropriate coverage move. Once its checks and counters have been worn down, not too much can stand in the way of a Gatr sweep.
So there you have it, folks. I've only just begun using this team, so I don't really have a good ladder ranking to share. Any tips or suggestions would be great! Right now, I know I have a bit of an electric weakness that Swampert used to take care of before I switched it with Empoleon, but like I said I enjoy the Defog support from Empoleon a lot. But anyway, that's what I have for ya! Thanks always everyone :)
