VGC Mega- Kanga Ice, Dragon, Steel core

(Side Note, I guess the commands for inserting an image have changed? I can't seem to get sixth gen pokes to with the old method. If you want to point me in the right direction, I'll get the right images uploaded.)

Hey Guys,

I’ve been out of the Pokémon game for about a year now. Life just got in the way. But with X and Y I began to take competitive battling a lot more seriously. Now with much more free time at hand, I’d love to get back into things again with Ruby and Sapphire.

I’m still in the process of getting into the new meta. I know there are a lot of changes. My hope is that people here can give some guidance with respect to my primary team I made for X and Y about a year ago and how I can adapt it to the new Meta.

So please make suggestions on what could be done to improve this team, especially with regards to the new game.

The general idea of the team was simple. I had a steel/ice/dragon core with Mega Kangaskhan as my primary sweeper. Nothing complicated.

Kangaskhan @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Scrappy
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Double-Edge
- Power-Up Punch
- Sucker Punch
This team has, surprisingly, undergone quite an evolution. Now, by no means is this team particularly unique. I think you’ll find it was quite standard for the old meta. Originally, my mega was Charizard Y. I really wanted a sun team, because… well Charizard Y. While the team was a blast and very satisfying to play with, I quickly realized I wasn’t really skilled enough at the prediction game to handle such a delicate and fragile Pokémon as Charizard. So, I switched to, arguably, the easiest mega to play with. Kangaskhan is not complicated. She’s flat out good and that’s evidenced by the unmatched ubiquity of this Pokémon.

I have thought about going with protect over fake out, since every one and their mother knows to predict a fake out from a Kanga. But the priority of fake out is pretty clutch! What do you guys think?

I went with Jolly and max speed to try and outspeed other kangas, but everyone runs (ran at least) max speed jolly kanga.

Mamoswine @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Thick Fat
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Icicle Spear
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
I have a love/hate relationship with Mamoswine that leans towards love. Mamo has won me many a 1-0 victory. Primarily due to the surprise factor of having a choice scarf. In a lot of ways, I hate choice items, since flexibility is a huge advantage in VGC, but I felt I really needed to outspeed Charizard Y and Talonflame’s fire attacks.

Plus, most people don’t expect a scarfed Mamo. It can be a good momentum switch on the surprise factor alone.

252 speed is probably unnecessary since Mamo’s main job is to outspeed the typical base 100 speed dragons and megas.

I calculated it many moons ago, and I think my actual Mamo on my DS does have less than 252, but I honestly can’t remember. Please forgive me, I can’t actually remember the original rationale for the pokemon I bred, so I’ve mostly just stuck typical ev’s on all the pokes.

My biggest problem with Mamo is his utter weakness to practically every common typing. Despite being a giant elephant (pig really?) he’s quite the glass cannon. Even with thick fat, he’s pretty easily taken out with most neutral attacks. If he doesn’t go first, he seems pretty doomed. Thanks to the prevelance of fire, fighting, and rock, he goes down quick to a lot of different pokemon.

He’s got great offensive typing, but defensively, he is pretty terrible.

Rotom-Wash @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 Spe
Bold Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Thunderbolt
- Protect
There’s a reason this Pokémon was extremely common (and I’m sure it still is). Rotom-wash is just good. I don’t think Rotom has nearly as clear a purpose as most of my other Pokémon. He’s just got great typing, and will-o-wisp helps to neuter the plethora of fighting types and other physical attackers out there (Kanga among others).

Everything about my Rotom-W is standard. I put 20 speed ev’s just for the sake of hopefully outspeeding any Rotom-H’s I come across, but I think even 20 speed ev’s is pretty standard.

Rotom-W seems to be pretty untouchable in the meta in general, except for the dreaded Ludicolo! Oh how that thing haunts my dreams.

Salamence @ Choice Specs
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Dragon Pulse
- Fire Blast
- Flamethrower
I guess the primary reason here is just to have a strong special attacking dragon. Originally, this was Hydreigon, but despite being powerful, it was much too frustrating to lose to faster, weaker dragons.

Salamence seemed like a better option for the purposes of this team. Intimidate support is very nice. I’m guessing I could have a better move selection. Ultimately, I didn’t think Salamence had access to enough coverage moves to interest me and I didn’t want to get locked into stat reducing moves like Draco meteor unless it was the difference between winning and losing.

Aegislash @ Leftovers
Ability: Stance Change
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- King's Shield
- Shadow Ball
- Sacred Sword
- Substitute
Aegislash is meant to be my Kanga and trick room counter. Not much to say about this.
Talonflame @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Taunt
- Protect
Talonflame is primarily here for priority support. I always try to have a powerful priority move on any team I have, to at least mitigate the chance of just being swept by a scarfed doomsday poke.

Though I also have talon on here to try and help me take care of Venusaur and Ludicolo. Unfortunately, Ludicolo is so often paired with Politoed. So it often feels like Talon Flame is killed before then. That’s why I have protect. So I can hopefully predict a protect on Ludicolo and attack the next turn.

Having 252 speed I’m sure is excessive, but I put it on there to make sure I outsped scarfed Smeargle and got the priority on opposing talonflames that might invest in an adamant nature or put some ev’s in defense.

Just a heads up- the Moderators prefer you have at least 4 lines of description for your Pokemon choice. Aegislash's description may get flagged.
