Mega Maw-dra Team: Gen 6 XY OU Mega Mawile/Kingdra Team

Mega Mawdra Team

Changes in RED
Hey fellow Smogoners! This is my second RMT thread here on Smogon. With the new crit mechanics, one of my all time favorite Pokemon, Kingdra, now has the ability to hit 100% crits (via Focus Energy+Scope Lens). With Kingdra being heavily underused outside of rain teams (which now don't function as well as in previous gens), I decided to form a team around him. So here we go!

<<Team Building Process>>
230.png 303-m.png
So here's Kingdra. The superstar of the team! I tried to think of the best Mega Pokemon that could accompany Kingdra and I decided to use Mega Mawile. They cover each others weaknesses well (Kingdra resists Fire and hits Ground with 2x; Mawile resists Fairy and is immune to Dragon) and the coverage the two of them together can get is pretty great. Also, the defensive Dragon-Fairy-Steel core comes in just two Pokemon with these two.
235.png 230.png 303-m.png
Seeing as how both my special and physical sweepers are super slow, I decided I needed a Sticky Web lead to gain that needed extra speed. I was deciding between a Galvantula and Smeargle, but I ended up picking Smeargle because having Stealth Rocks and Spore really helps my team.
235.png 230.png 303-m.png 663.png
I saw that my team overall was pretty slow and needed a good revenge killer. Scarf Garchomp came into mind, but having to seal up that 4x weakness to Ice was way too much of a hassle. I decided to get another defensive core (Fire-Water-Grass) going along with my Dragon-Steel-Fairy core, so I added my Choice Band Talonflame.
235.png 230.png 303-m.png 663.png 251.png
To complete my FWG core, I added an Assault Vest Celebi which could act as both a wall and a special sweeper. It carried Charge Beam as its set up move along with other coverage moves.

235.png 230.png 303-m.png 663.png 711.png

I replaced Celebi with Gourgeist-Super simply because Celebi was not functioning well on my team + I needed a spin blocker. Gourgeist would complete the FWG core and act as a defensive wall on my team. I would like a stronger alternative seeing as how my team is really offensive, but Gourgeist does its role in taking out Excadrills and Tentacruels.

235.png 230.png 303-m.png 663.png 711.png 642.png

My team was really weak to opposing Talonflames, so I needed a Brave Bird blocker. That's where Thundurus comes in. He can come in against flying types, set up priority Nasty Plot, then proceed to sweep from there with the legendary BoltBeam (well, not BoltBeam. More like BoltHPIce) combo.

smeargle_by_nami_tsuki-d4hwp3j.png

Picasso (Smeargle) (M) @ Focus sash
Ability: Own Tempo
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spe / 4 Def
IVs: 0 Atk
Timid Nature (+Spe -Atk)
- Spore
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rocks
- Sticky Webs
Description: Smeargle does what it does best: Spore the lead, set up hazards. Easy as that. Smeargle plays a key role in this team by setting up the Sticky Webs, which allows my Kingdra and Mawile to outspeed Pokemon that would normally be faster. This is really important late-game when I want to get sweeps because being able to out speed the opponent really helps in cleaning up. I also replaced Magic Coat with Rapid Spin with suggestion from Rosenfeldius. Like he said, there's no reason to run Magic Coat over Rapid Spin.

Synergy:
Ghost: Gourgeist

Roger (Kingdra) (M) @ Scope Lens
Ability: Sniper
EVs: 252 SpAtk / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Modest Nature (+SpAtk -Atk)
-Focus Energy
-Draco Meteor
-Hidden Power Fire
-Hydro Pump
Description: The star of the team! Kingdra just needs to set up one Focus Energy, and with the new mechanics, can land 100% critical hits with every attack. This, along with the Sniper ability, is perfect because Kingdra basically hits every Pokemon with pseudo Super Effective damage since the Sniper ability makes it so that critical hits do 2.25x damage as opposed to the normal 1.5x. Draco, along with the rest of its moves, works really well since critical hits ignore stat drops. Hidden Power Fire is for those pesky Ferrothorns, Skarmorys, Scizors, etc. that think they can come in and set up on my Kingdra.

Synergy:
Fire: Mawile, Gourgeist
Water: Talonflame

Rafa (Mawile) (M) @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate -> Huge Power
EVs: 104 HP / 252 Atk / 124 Spe
Adamant Nature (+Atk -SpAtk)
-Swords Dance
-Play Rough
-Sucker Punch
-Iron Head
Description: The other star of the team! Mega Mawile serves as both the physical sweeper and Fairy-Steel part of the Fairy-Steel-Dragon core. This guy can come into any non-ground/fire physical hitter, get off Intimidate, Mega-Evolve, Swords Dance, then BOOM you have an extremely powerful Pokemon. With such a great typing and awesome attack stat, Mawile functions really well with Kingdra. It also walls a lot of Gourgeist's weaknesses and both of Kingdra's two weaknesses, Fairy and Dragon.
Sticky Webs also helps with one of its only hindrances, its base 50 speed stat.

Synergy:
Flying: Gourgeist
Rock: Thundurus, Talonflame
Bug: Gourgeist
Ice: Gourgeist
Dark: Gourgeist
Fairy: Kingdra
Dragon: Kingdra

Broken A'f (Talonflame) (M) @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EV: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 HP
Jolly Nature (+Spe -SpAtk)
-Brave Bird
-Flare Blitz
-U-Turn
-Tailwind
Description: My main revenge killer. With the Choice Band and priority Brave Bird, Talonflame truly becomes a monster. Also, Talonflame can function as a lead since it can set up Tailwind or scout with U-Turn. However, even though Talonflame is broken as f*** (hence its nickname), my team lacks a spinner. This is a really big problem because if my opponent gets off Stealth Rocks, then my Talonflame will only be able to get one kill. This is the biggest flaw in my team from what I see.

Synergy:
Ground: Mawile
Fairy: Kingdra
Fire: Gourgeist, Mawile
Bug: Gourgeist

gourgeist_by_flying_fox-d6rmxa4.jpg

Gaara (Gourgeist-Small) (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Frisk
EV: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 Spe
Jolly
Nature (+Spe -SpAtk)
-Will-O-Wisp
-Leech Seed
-Substitute
-Phantom Force
Description: With suggestions from Timpsu, I decided to change my defensive Gourgeist-Super into a sub-seeding Gourgeist-Small. I realized that having access to a fast crippling of rapid spinning Excadrills with Will-O-Wisp is really important and that sub-seeding Gourgeists are just super awesome and useful in general. Phantom Force is for stalling out Leftover turns. I haven't tried that many battles with a Gourgeist-Small, but so far, it's doing better than the Gourgeist-Super.

Synergy:
Ground: Mawile
Water: Talonflame
Electric: Talonflame

lord_of_the_thunder_thundurus_by_namh-d3desvm.jpg

Cloud Man (Thundurus) @ Life Orb
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 112 Atk / 140 SpAtk / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Hasty Nature (+Spe -Def)
-Thunderbolt
-Hidden Power Ice
-Knock Off
-Superpower
Description: With advice from fimbu1vetr, I decided to switch my standard Prankster Thundurus into an unorthodox Defiant Thundurus. It is my counter to Talonflames, Mandibuzzes, Togekisses and Gliscors. Also, with the surprise factor, Thundurus acts surprisingly well as a mixed sweeper with good coverage with its moves. I replaced Leftovers with Life Orb since Thundurus is going to need extra power because of its distributed SpAtk and Atk EVs.

Synergy:
Flying: Gourgeist
Ground: Mawile

Conclusion
Thanks so much for reading. I know the team needs a lot of fixing, so I would really appreciate some help from my fellow Smogoners. Feel free to test this team out, just please keep the nicknames. Also, I am relatively new to competitive battling and Smogon in general, so any extra advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again :)

Hey! Gonna share a few thoughts on the team. I think that Kingdra would benefit most from Modest nature, as even with the boost from Focus Energy, you still need all the power you can get. In addition, Timid doesn't let you outspeed anything notable. Your M-Mawile could benefit from some extra Speed. 124 Speed is needed to outspeed Azumarill, Scizor and Aegislash. You could also consider using Knock Off, as it's generally the better option for its disrupting effect. Iron Head mainly hits fairies and M-Venusaur, but I think Knock Off would fit better on your team. It's true that your team doesn't really support Talonflame, but it might be a bit hard to fit rapid spin or Defog on this team. Contrary to your statement, the most common rapid spinners in OU are Excadrill and Starmie (or atleast the best ones are those). I really like your Gourgeist as a personal touch, I'm just not so certain as to how well it actually spinblocks. Your Gourgeist does block quite well against Excadrill, but matchups against Starmie might be a bit painful. In addition, Gourgeist-small is actually the best Gourgeist form, as a speedy W-o-W is one of the best tools of Gourgeist, in addition to being a fast subSeeder. Probably the most reliable spinblocker in OU is an Air Balloon Aegislash. It can come in easily on Excadrill, and can survive one Hydro Pump on the switch from Starmie. Also, with Pursuit, the Starmie user has to take the risk of getting trapped by Pursuit. Also, it offers good offensive pressure on the opponent with solid offensive stats and good coverage. Ofc, it doesn't quite fill the FWG core, but is otherwise a solid choice. I hope my few thoughts have been of help!
move 1: Shadow Ball
move 2: Flash Cannon
move 3: Shadow Sneak
move 4: Sacred Sword / Pursuit
ability: Stance Change
item: Air Balloon
nature: Hasty / Naive
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

I'll try the Gourgeist-Small like you mentioned and possibly replace him with Aegislash if that doesn't work.
Any other suggestions?

Hmmm so seems like a cool team, but also super reliant on sticky web, so defog seems to ruin your day. I'd advise defiant thundurus or bisharp and maybe shuckle instead of smeargle (I'm not sure of the set, perhaps mental herb)

. I hear sticky web smeargle just isn't very good (I don't see any in 1600+ ladder at all, but I do see shuckle)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The Gourgeist-small is definitely better than Gourgeist-Super.
I still have one problem and that's not having a Spinner. Could someone help me with my team to include a spinner?

Replace Magic Coat on Smeargle with Rapid Spin. I don't really see why Magic Coat is necessary and/or better there
