Background: Swampert is my favorite starter and when I found out he gets Swift Swim when he mega evolve, I decided to make a rain team.
Politoed @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 248 HP / 164 SpD / 96 Spe
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Toxic
- Ice Beam
- Encore
I chose Politoed because I want a rain-setter, and I prefer Drizzle over using Rain Dance to avoid wasting a turn. Politoed's main role in this team is to just set up rain, so my Swampert can sweep. I also added Toxic to cripple some fat, bulky pokemon.Protect is to scout out some opponent's move, but I'm actually not sure what else to add as his 4th move or if Protect is good enough. Scald provides STAB coverage as well as a chance to burn, and Ice Beam is just a coverage move for hitting some flying types, dragon types, etc. Encore instead of Protect to prevent certain Pokemons from setting up freely.
Swampert (M) @ Swampertite
Ability: Damp
EVs: 104 HP / 252 Atk / 152 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- Low Kick
Swampert is obviously the star of this team, and I chose to build this team around him. This Swampert set did a lot and during my play testing on Showdown, I've swept with it easily in the rain. Swampert provides a lot of damage with his main STAB moves Waterfall and Earthquake. Ice Punch is to hit those pesky grass types and it can even kill a Mega Sceptile as it's weak to Ice 4x.Protect is mainly there to buy my Swampert time and guarantee the Swift Swim boost the next turn. Low Kick can hit Ferrothorn, and I chose Low Kick over Superpower because I don't want to be forced to switch if I can easily sweep the rest of the enemy team.
Volcarona @ Life Orb
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 96 HP / 252 SpA / 160 Spe
Modest Nature
- Bug Buzz
- Hurricane
- Quiver Dance
- Giga Drain
Volcarona covers my Swamperts huge grass weakness as well as my other water types. It also gets Hurricane, so it utilizes the rain to get that 100% accuracy. Bug Buzz is just another good STAB move. Quiver Dance can get me some SpA and SpD boost so I can sweep/tank special attacks.Roost is there for recovery in case it gets low on HP. I'm not sure if I should add a Fire type move as this is a rain team and it's weakened, but Ferrothorn is super annoying and my Swampert can't really deal with it that well. As for the EV spread, I'm still experimenting with different stuff and I don't really know what I like yet. Giga Drain gives Volcarona sustain and it damaged grass types as well, and it could OHKO/2HKO Rotom-W, which could wall my Swampert pretty well, during my testing.
Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Thunder Wave
- Stealth Rocks
Ferrothorn is a great physical wall, and my team was lacking one. Ferrothorn covers my Swampert's weakness really well and rain does reduce fire power so he's a little safer in the rain. Gyro Balland Power Whip are is a good STAB move for damage, and Spikes is a good entry hazard. Leech Seed is there for sustain since I'm not running Leftovers. My earlier moveset included Thunder Wave instead of Power Whip, and it did help my Swampert sweep even if it's not raining. I replaced it with Power Whip later on because people would switch in their annoying water types after they find out I'm not packing it, so I added it to deal with them. Power Whip has been pretty lackluster and Thunder Wave actually guaranteed a lot of my victories so far because I would usually cripple any threats that wants to switch in. Stealth Rocks was added since Excadrill was gone and Stealth Rocks is more important than Spikes
to me.
Excadrill @ Air Balloon
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 60 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Slide
My Volcarona is really weak to rocks, so I wanted a spinner. At the time, my Ferrothorn had Stealth Rocks, but I wanted Spikes as well. Excadrill provides both Rapid Spin and Stealth Rocks, so I added it. Earthquake is a great STAB move for tons of damage, and Rock Slide is for coverage. The EV spread is also experimental like my Volcarona because I still don't really know a good EV spread for it.
Azumarill @ Assault Vest
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Knock Off
- Waterfall
I felt that I needed another pokemon who benefitted from rain and provide some bulk, so I came across an Assault Vest set for Azumarill, so I decided to try it. So far, this thing is amazing because it can eat tons of special attacks as well as do a crap load of damage. Waterfall and Pay Rough are just 2 great STAB moves for Azumarill, and Knock Off is to hit Psychic, Ghost types as well as cripple some pokemon by removing their items. Aqua Jet is just there so my Azumarill can kill a low HP target that can outspeed and kill my Azumarill.
Kabutops @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Rapid Spin
- Swords Dance
Kabutops is actually really strong. Kabutops replaced my Excadrill as a Spinner. I was thinking of whether or not to give this Stealth Rocks, and I decided not to in the end. One Swords Dance allowed it to sweep an entire team in the rain after rocks, so I'm actually pretty happy with this.
This is actually my first actual team that I built and battled with because I never finished any of my old teams because they suck. I've been watching the competitive scene for a while now, but I didn't really battle a lot because I was pretty intimidated by it. My test runs on showdown have also been in pretty low ladder, which might be why I've been winning a good amount, but I don't know.
Edit: Just FYI, crossed outwords are the old text that I didn't want to delete entirely so I could look at my edits, and the bold words are text that I edited in.
Thanks for reading my RMT people. Sorry I ramble.
