Moves
========

* Meteor Mash is Metagross's strongest STAB attack, allowing it to break past defensive Pokemon like Clefable and Cradily.
* Bullet Punch helps Metagross alleviate its mediocre Speed, being able to revenge kill offensive Pokemon like Mega Diancie, Mega Aerodactyl, and Nihilego.
* Earthquake is a solid coverage option to hit Poison-types like Alolan Muk and Toxapex.
* Pursuit allows Metagross to trap and OHKO Pokemon that would normally be forced out by it, such as Latios and -1 Victini.
* Thunder Punch can be used as a means of hitting bulky Flying-types like Skarmory, Mantine, and Celesteela.

Set Details
========

* Maximum investment in Attack with Adamant nature is used to make Metagross as strong as possible.
* Maximum investment in Speed allows it to outspeed Azumarill and Mega Venusaur.
* Clear Body makes Metagross unaffected by Sticky Web's Speed reduction, and allows it to bypass Intimidate Pokemon like Gyarados.
* Choice Band is used to further bolster Metagross's wallbreaking capabilities, allowing it to 2HKO Skarmory with a Thunder Punch after Stealth Rock.

Team Options
========

* Victini has the freedom to deviate from its role as a physical wallbreaker by run a Z-Celebrate set, allowing it to effectively beat types such as Steel and Poison late-game. It also appreciates Metagross's ability to revenge kill fast Rock-types like Mega Diancie, Nihilego, and Mega Aerodactyl.
* Latios can revenge kill Dragon-types like Hydreigon and Garchomp that can threaten to OHKO Metagross with their secondary STAB attacks. In return, Metagross is able to break past special walls that Latios can't beat, such as Mantine and Alolan Muk.
* Mega Latias appreciates Metagross's ability to beat Mega Diancie and Mimikyu with Bullet Punch, allowing it to serve as a more effective wincon against Fairy teams. It's also capable of switching into Fire- and Ground-type attacks for Metagross.
* Mega Gallade can beat offensive threats like Heatran and Diggersby that can threaten to OHKO Metagross. It can also remove Chansey and Porygon2's Eviolites with Knock Off, allowing Metagross to 2HKO them with Meteor Mash.
* Deoxys-S is able to set up Reflect and Light Screen for Metagross, letting it switch into Latios and Nihilego more freely to trap them with Pursuit.
* Jirachi can set up Stealth Rock for Metagross, allowing it to guarantee a 2HKO against Skarmory with a Thunder Punch. It can also use U-turn to bring in Metagross safely.
* Celebi checks Water-types that are immune to Thunder Punch, such as Swampert and Gastrodon. It also appreciates Metagross's ability to revenge kill Mimikyu with Bullet Punch, allowing it to become more effective against Fairy teams.
* Slowbro can switch into Ground-types like Excadrill and Landorus-T for Metagross. It can also slow down offensive threats like Heatran and Gyarados with Thunder Wave, allowing Metagross to safely outspeed and revenge kill them.
* Mega Slowbro appreciates Metagross's ability to beat special walls like Alolan Muk and Chansey, allowing it to serve as an effective win-condition.
* Alakazam can check offensive Dark-types like Mega Sharpedo and Hydreigon. In return, Metagross can break past special tanks like Celesteela and Mantine.
* Mew can burn physical attackers like Diggersby and Excadrill, allowing Metagross to survive a hit from them and OHKO them in response.

Other Options
=============

Psychic
--------
* Ice Punch can be used to hit Ground-types like Gliscor and Garchomp. However, this would come at the cost of Pursuit to trap Latios and Nihilego, or Thunder Punch to hit Celesteela and Mantine.
* Hammer Arm is an option to target defensive Pokemon like Porygon2 and Ferrothorn. However, the Speed drop from Hammer Arm makes Metagross much more susceptible to revenge killing.
* Hone Claws Z-move
* Jolly nature

Checks and Counters
===================

Psychic
--------
**Fire-types**: Mega Charizard Y and Heatran are able to OHKO Metagross with their STAB attacks. They also resist Bullet Punch, making it difficult to revenge kill them from low health.

**Ground-types**: Landorus, Excadrill, Garchomp, and Dugtrio can outspeed and OHKO Metagross with their STAB moves. Dugtrio in particular can make sure Metagross can't switch out thanks to Arena Trap.

**Ghost-types**: Gengar and Blacephalon are able to OHKO Metagross with a STAB Shadow Ball. Blacephalon in particular resists Bullet Punch as well.

**Dark-types**: Hydreigon, Bisharp, and Mega Sharpedo can OHKO Metagross with their Dark STAB moves.

**Physical Walls**: Gliscor, Porygon2, and Gastrodon are able to switch into Metagross and slowly wear it down. However, Gliscor will have to watch out for a possible Ice Punch.
