Magic Guard (Roaring Moon) @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Earthquake / Taunt
- U-turn
- Roost
[SET COMMENTS]
Magic Guard Roaring Moon is a fantastic pivot and item remover that has great offensive and defensive prowess alongside stellar longevity. Magic Guard allows Roaring Moon to augment its defensive profile by avoiding all indirect chip damage, such as from Rocky Helmet and entry hazards, which would otherwise hamper it. Magic Guard also has the added benefit of countering Prankster Pecharunt, with Roaring Moon's Dark typing blocking Parting Shot and Magic Guard preventing Toxic chip damage from Malignant Chain. Knock Off removes items like Heavy-Duty Boots, Rocky Helmet, and Leftovers from targets like Corviknight, Zapdos, Great Tusk, and Pecharunt to either make them more susceptible to entry hazards or enable teammates like Zamazenta and Meowscarada. Earthquake pressures Pokemon like Iron Hands, Heatran, and Iron Treads, while Taunt is much more effective on hazard stacking teams to prevent Defog and Roost from the likes of Corviknight, Mandibuzz, and Zapdos. U-turn helps scout moves while further chipping answers to Roaring Moon like Corviknight, Chesnaught, and Great Tusk, while Roost gives it longevity that is especially appreciated in matchups where special attackers like Hisuian Electrode, Sandy Shocks, and Iron Moth are present.
Magic Guard Roaring Moon fits on playstyles ranging from bulky offense to stall thanks to it wearing down checks with Knock Off and U-turn while taking advantage of its entry hazard immunity alongside Roost recovery to outlast would-be answers; as a result, Roaring Moon has a wide array of synergetic partners. Entry hazard setters like Skarmory, Sandy Shocks, and Great Tusk pair incredibly with Roaring Moon, since these hazards allow it to pressure would-be answers like Great Tusk, Corviknight, and Iron Hands in conjunction with U-turn. Since Roaring Moon excels at making progress with U-turn, wallbreakers like Zamazenta and Deoxys-S as well as pivots like Sandy Shocks and Cinderace can capitalize on the opportunities provided. Steel-types like Corviknight and Gholdengo appreciate Roaring Moon's ability to absorb Fire-, Electric-, and Ghost-type moves from Pokemon such as Heatran, Sandy Shocks, and opposing Gholdengo for them, and in return they can help patch up Roaring Moon's weakness to Fighting- and Fairy-type attacks. Likewise, Water-type RegenVest users such as Manaphy and Primarina make great partners, as Roaring Moon can switch into Grass- and Electric-type attacks from the likes of Hisuian Electrode and Sandy Shocks, while they can answer or switch into threats like Chien-Pao, opposing Primarina, and Cinderace. Roaring Moon fears Great Tusk, which can easily absorb its hits and is a common hazard clearer, so teammates that can switch into or punish Great Tusk like Corviknight, Zapdos, and Meowscarada are necessary. Roaring Moon also dislikes Knock Off despite resisting the move, since its Life Orb carries a lot of its damage output, so Knock Off absorbers like Corviknight, Ting-Lu, and Great Tusk are appreciated. Lastly, faster threats like Chien-Pao, Zamazenta, and Deoxys-Speed can threaten an OHKO on Roaring Moon, so Pokemon that counter or outspeed these foes like Regenerator Primarina, Bulletproof Iron Treads, and Choice Scarf Scream Tail are essential.
