Mienshao (QC Rejected 3/3)

Updated Mienshao

Reckless Bastard.

QC: Rejected (3/3)
GP:

Overview
########

• Has a great base attack stat of 125 and a decent base speed of 105
• Has two fantastic abilities in the form of Regenerator and Reckless
• Access to Reckless High Jump Kick allows it to muscle through some of the best physical walls
• Decent coverage options and workable Special Attack to beat its would be counters
• Offers little to no defensive synergy to a team
• Paper thin defences

All-out Attacker
########
move 1: High Jump Kick
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Knock Off / Poison Jab
move 4: U-turn / Hidden Power Ice
ability: Regenerator
item: Life Orb
nature: Jolly / Naive
evs: 6 Hp / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Moves
========

• High Jump Kick is your strongest move and is incredibly threatening. Anything slower than you neutral to HJK will fear it. If it does miss, its crippling side effect is somewhat negated by Regenerator
• Stone Edge and Knock Off are handy coverage options for Pokemon that resist Fighting type attacks - the former hits Flying types and Bug types whilst the latter hits Psychic types and Ghosts who stop you spamming HJK
• U-turn is used to nab switch advantage and works well with Regenerator
• Poison Jab is an option to hit bulky Fairies such as Clefable and Florges
• HP Ice can be used to slam Gliscor and Landorus-T for 2HKOs. If you are running HP Ice use a Naive nature with a EV spread of 252 Atk / 24 SAtk / 232 Spe

Set Details
========

• Life Orb provides an excellent power boost and has great synergy with Regenerator, having its recoil negated upon switching out
• Regenerator is the primary option because of the longevity it provides - however Reckless is an option to boost HJK's power to insane levels
• Jolly to outspeed base 100's and Garchomp, Naive if using HP Ice

Usage Tips
========

• Regenerator version can switch in and out against weak / resisted attacks and immediately threaten something
• Functions as an excellent lure for certain Pokemon - Gliscor and Landorus-T are crippled by Knock Off and 2HKOed by HP Ice
• Should be brought in on predicted non-damaging moves or after a teammate has fainted since it is too frail to take a hit

Team Options
========

• Pursuit users to remove Ghost types that prevent Mienshao from HJK spamming - however Tyranitar should only be used with the Regenerator set as Sandstorm + life orb recoil kills Reckless variant too quickly
• Something to set Stealth Rock to secure a few KOs
• Sweepers that appreciate walls like Skarmory gone

Other Options
########

• Choice Scarf
• Choice Band
• Substitute + 3 Attacks
• Substitute + Baton Pass
• Grass Knot

Checks & Counters
########

• Most priority users
• Anything quicker than Mienshao
• Ghost types switching into HJK
• Protect users

Mienshao's claim to fame in OU was mixed attacking, and it should stick with that in Gen VI. Hidden Power Ice is still a primary move option, as you can't break through Landorus-T (the most common physical tank in the game) and Gliscor without it. It also damage the likes of Garchomp and Dragonite without having to rely on HJK & Stone Edge. U-turn also shouldn't be slashed with anything, since Mienshao is one of the best U-turn users around (it's fast, and its ability effectively negates entry hazards) and it's one of its best tools (it'll be spamming U-turn early on, more often than naught). The last slot should be dedicated to tertiary coverage moves; Poison Jab covers Azumarill, whereas Knock Off is more effective against Ghost-types (Gourgeist & Trevenant in particular). Grass Knot can still wreck Hippowdon (who takes nothing from HP Ice) and comfortably 2HKOes physically defensive Jellicent after Stealth Rock.

The main set should look like this:

All-out Attacker
########
move 1: High Jump Kick
move 2: Hidden Power Ice
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Poison Jab / Knock Off / Grass Knot
ability: Regenerator / Reckless
item: Life Orb
nature: Naive
evs: 252 Atk / 24 SpA / 232 Spe

I'm not particularly confident with the last slot, so if another QCer could weigh in that would be great. I also don't think the Choice Scarf set is any good in gen VI. It leaves you open to too many threats (Talonflame & Ghost-types) and unlike Terrakion/Keldeo, it can't switch into anything.

Knock Off >>>> Poison Jab. Without it you can't do shit to Aegislash, Gourgeist, physically defensive Jellicent, and Trevenant, meaning you can't wallbreak properly. Also, i hate to say it but U-turn shouldn't be a primary option anymore, at least not if Mienshao wants to be a good wallbreaker. Stone Edge is too useful to pass up, covering Pokemon such as Togekiss, Talonflame, Mega Char Y, and defensive Gyarados. Or Poison Jab, which takes care of Fairy-types, including the common and dangerous Clefable. Finally, Poison Jab is not really needed to get past Azumarill, as HJK already 2HKOes half of the time after SR, js. This is how i would make the set look like:

All-out Attacker
########
move 1: High Jump Kick
move 2: Knock Off
move 3: Stone Edge / Poison Jab
move 4: Hidden Power Ice / U-turn (if you have Lando-T and Gliscor covered, and Knock Off already cripples both on the switch)
ability: Regenerator / Reckless
item: Life Orb
nature: Naive
evs: 252 Atk / 24 SpA / 232 Spe

Choice Scarf is not viable, remove it.

Finally, Regenerator should be the only ability on the mixed set, as Mienshao will spend most of its time using its coverage moves and the passive healing is one of the reasons to use Mienshao as your wallbreaker. Mention Reckless in AC.

I highly disagree with any set slashing U-turn, primarily for the reasons PK stated. U-turn is hugely important to Mienshao's success; it frankly sucks without it, simply because it needs a way out and a purpose (momentum).

QC Reject 2/3

There a number of things wrong with Mienshao in OU and is simply outclassed by the plethora of other Fighting-types available.
