[SET]
Mixed Attacker (Dragonite) @ Life Orb / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Aerilate
EVs: 156 HP / 252 Atk / 100 SpA
Naughty Nature
- Extreme Speed
- Thunderbolt / Flamethrower
- Dragon Dance / Earthquake
- Roost
[SET COMMENTS]
Dragonite can leverage its solid Special Attack, its deep coverage movepool, and the sheer power of Aerilate Extreme Speed to be an incredibly effective mixed attacker and late-game cleaner while still bringing plenty of defensive utility. Thunderbolt cleanly eliminates Corviknight and Mandibuzz looking to soak up Extreme Speed, while Flamethrower OHKOes Fluffy Corviknight and threatens non-Well-Baked Body Gholdengo. Dragon Dance allows Dragonite to set up for a sweep, but Earthquake is also an option, guaranteeing damage against non-immune Steel-types like Empoleon, Gholdengo, (comma) and Heatran, as well as strongly hitting Azelf. Roost allows Dragonite some additional longevity, letting it more effectively use its high bulk and rich defensive typing. 100 Special Attack EVs guarantee a 2HKO on Corviknight after Leftovers if Dragonite is holding Life Orb, with the rest of the EVs being put into bulk to let Dragonite more effectively check threats like Ogerpon-W and Iron Moth. Heavy-Duty Boots is an option over Life Orb, giving Dragonite even more longevity, which lets it better check threats like Ogerpon-H and gives it more opportunities to switch in at the cost of a noticeable power drop, missing the guaranteed 2HKO against Pixilate Scream Tail. Dragonite's revenge killing capabilities are appreciated by powerful mid-game wallbreakers like Gholdengo, Scream Tail, and Latios, all of which can wear down a team over time for Dragonite to clean up. Dragonite's poor matchup against Psychic Surge users like Deoxys-S and Azelf demands a solid answer to them, be it an offensive one like Choice Scarf Roaring Moon or Hadron Engine Gholdengo or a bulky switch-in like Heatran or Empoleon. Dragonite can very easily be forced out by attackers like Primarina and Scream Tail and, without Heavy-Duty Boots, is extremely vulnerable to Stealth Rock, meaning bulky pivots like Manaphy and Meloetta and entry hazard removers like Corviknight and Great Tusk are recommended teammates.
