Monotype Leader
It's time for Monotype OMs to take the main stage once again! With MOMPL III coming up, we're opening the discussion about the tournament's format. Last year's format consisted of:
  • Monothreat
  • Mono UU
  • CAP
  • National Dex
  • LC
  • Wildcard
This year, since the mom tier has grown since MOMPL II, we are deciding on rather the format be 6x6 or 6x8. We also would like to lock in 2 slots that will be provided below:

- Doubles Mono
- Ubers Mono

If you have extraordinarily strong thoughts about why one of the 2 locked-in slots should be replaced, we're interested in your thinking, but it will be a high bar for swapping it out.

As usual, shitposting won't be tolerated in format discussion threads, and if you choose to participate, please don't respond with only a one-liner. Once final decisions have been made, we will post here and the format will not change afterwards.

This thread will stay open until Janurary 18th. Manager signups will open after this thread closes.

Hello, I know doubles mono is one of the locked formats, but just wanted to make a post outlining some of the competitive gameplay that has went on since the tier has started since it’s been a relatively short amount of time.

While the meta is still developing, we've seen a wide variety of viable types and archetypes emerge through room tours and the Mono OM discord tour. Resources are actively being updated (Sample Teams) and worked on (VR soon).

Below are some replays showcasing some relevant structures and the format:
Hex (Steel) vs Vapo (Ground)
Ninjasnapple (Water) vs Test Bots (Fighting)
Ninjasnapple (Dark) vs Test Bots (Dragon)
Ninjasnapple (Water) vs Pengairxan (Ground)
Ninjasnapple (Fairy) vs Pengarixan (Psychic)
Test Bots (Ice) vs 8therum (Dark)
LogIce (Normal) vs TTK (Ground)
LogIce (Flying) vs Ninjasnapple (Dark)

havent played this tournament in a couple years but am considering signing up this year. ndm / threat are unnecessary (especially ndm) in this tournament because they are in mwp and ndm isn't exactly starved for tournaments. not including adv in some capacity is a huge throw because people seem to be pretty excited about it right now. no real opinion on 6x6 and 6x8 simply because i don't know how many signups last year got / people will sign up this year, someone more informed than me can share their input. also think it could be fun to include spp8 bo3 / bo5 cuz why not. for fun tournament for fun format, only if 8 slots though

adv
cap
lc
wildcard
doubles
ubers

---
(only if 8 slots) (yes i am aware i listed 6 tiers above and 3 here but i doubt spp8 will be in)

dpp
spp8 bo3 / bo5
tera

Sup Sup. I think 8x8 sounds hot, the player base I feel has risen enough to have it such. NDM has earned enough reputation to not be considered an OM atp. I also think threat being nearly played in everything, we don't need it here as peeps will just use teams from mwp. I could be entirely wrong though on that one, Anyways I propose.
  • Tera
  • Mono UU
  • CAP
  • ADV
  • LC
  • Wildcard
  • Ubers
  • Doubles

As long as LC is in idc
Tera should not be in the convo
NDM has its place in many tours so I get the reasoning as to not include it, however if its in this one it should be the tiebreak neutral tier imo
Monothreats only showcase is in MWP, I would honestly vouch for the types picked in MWP to not be picked in MOMPL so we can see more variety
8 slots is nice since tiers like ADV and Doubles have communities and we can showcase new tiers

Dudeeeee why dont we do flex tiers with 8 slots:
- Monothreat (types not used in MWP)
- NDM (tiebreak tier)
- Team A Flex 1
- Team A Flex 2
- Team A Flex 3
- Team B Flex 1
- Team B Flex 2
- Team B Flex 3

I feel like this would get people out of their comfort zone, and that way we can add more tiers to choose from since we have a lot
- Monotype Randbats bo3
- Ubers
- UU
- LC
- CAP
- ADV
- DPP
- Wildcard
- Doubles
- etc?

I know Flex tiers is being looked at for the upcoming mono champ league so this would be the perfect opportunity to test it out, and adds a twist that makes it fun and spicy.

(Typed this entire post out then realized I somehow missed Uta+Royal's posts where they had the same thoughts as me, so tldr for this next paragraph is #IAgreeWithThem)

I wonder if there's room for National Dex to be replaced with another OM. I think NatDex is great it just doesn't seem very "Monotype OM" to me anymore. It's in MWP and sees a lot of play as its in every single ND team tour (wooo! ty ND). Not that I'm saying it should 100% be removed but just food for thought if it means anything. I also agree with Uta that people are likely to re-use in Threat, and after MWP and seeing a lott of people complain about it, it might leave a sour taste in some peoples mouths to see it again and have to replay potentially the same matchups.

LC Monotype has gotten a bad rap in the past but TBH SV LC Mono in the very little time I've spent with it was kinda fun / felt decently varied. Though, LC being very reliant on player / turn precision can make it a little frustrating to play when you have the innate building restriction that Monotype has.

I think ADV should be in 100%. It's a very interesting old gen and if people actually build it and don't just use samples I think the meta could see real development and hopefully over time it's something that can be moved over to official Monotype. It sucks that DPP is so 1D so it's likely to not go anywhere but I think ADV has a genuine shot and is very worth including.

In that same vein, is DPP so doomed or is me bringing it up for consideration worth anything...

Doubles + CAP + Wildcard are all fire (wildcard has had great feedback anyway so I doubt it's going anywhere).

In my past experience with Ubers it has felt very volatile and just like random offenseslop and a lot of games felt like people lost to some dumb cheese they didn't have a way to avoid since Ubers adds a lot of new actors into the mon pool and it's genuinely hard to account for it all. Y'all can take this part with a grain of salt cuz I'm not trying to bash Ubers or anything, I personally like the tier. I feel like I've just seen some consistent frustration with it from others.

Don't think flex tiers are the way to go in an OM format that doesn't have a super diverse playerpool.

Ubers and ADV are the ideal last two slots and I think having 8 is an excellent idea.
Team tours are already team tours no love lost if my guy gets haxed by a Snaelstrom and my prep with an unkillable lion + Deoxys in Ubers is stumped by a surprise Dark bring. Let's make this the fun tour where people get to try all the offshoot things that fall under the MOM-brella.
Doubles would be a fun new inclusion.
Popularity is definitely important here to draw out new+the highest quality of newer players to Mono scene+older players+really skilled fringe players that happen to really like one of the proposed metas, same rationale why it should be 8 slots too.
Not necessarily beneficial to the discussion but just to give you an idea my 5 favorite OMs are ADV, Ubers, Tera, Threat, CAP. I'm sure that's not the case for most.

I'm eh about NDM and it doesn't need to be in MOMPL unlike Threat.

If no ones brave enough to say it, I'll say it. Mono UU is a waste of a slot. IK that's unpopular won't care to argue thoroughly against it.

Here are some of my thoughts on the proposed tiers so far speaking as probably just a player and someone who is reasonably active in the MOM room and watches over TNs a lot:
NDM, same as everyone else has said before me, isn't a OM and should not be counted for this. If you want an NDM team tour, NDMPL is I think March so stay tuned for that.

I think both Ubers and Doubles should be included, Ubers generally has a solid representation and is a fairly competitive format along with just coming up Mono Ghosting which included Ubers alongside LC and CAP, two long time OM staples. And while Doubles doesn't have this strong tour showing and still isn't included in TNs for now, it does showcase an entirely new side of monotype.

I think ADV might be a bit too recent overall as it is currently less than a month old at the time of this post. That being said, general opinion seems to be strong on it being fun, so I'm not opposed to it.

Finally threat. Threat is weird, we've just had it in MWP so having two threat tours in a row one straight after another might be a bit much, but thats just me. If we got an 8 slot Format, I think Threat is a must, but if we got 6 then I think its fine to drop.

For my ideal formats here is what I propose:
For 6 slot: Wildcard, LC, CAP, Ubers, Doubles, and either ADV or Threat.
For 8 slot: Wildcard, LC, CAP, Ubers, Doubles, ADV, Threat and Tera or UU.

For the 8 slot lineup, Tera and UU kind of just have a middling general stance and are kind of stinky in my eyes, if we had to pick one, I lean more Tera personally but in reality, I think SPP8 Bo3 would be better there.

One point I'd like to bring up is what a Monotype OM is. When I think of Monotype OM, I think of something that is not playable on a cartridge, such as NatDex, AAA, STABmons, Mnm, CAP, etc. I honestly think Monotype OM should be renamed to Unofficial Monotype metagames, where said metagames are playable on cartridge, and OMs should be used for anything not playable on cartridge, but that would alleinate NatDex which has a large community and is one of the better metagames.

With that being said, having seen and played ADV, I can say it has the same problem I have with many other old gens: the mechanics are not conducive to what most would deem a "competitive" metagame with crits, high-powered explosions, lack of hazard control. With that being said, I would put most Monotype OMs in the same boat: they are by no means amazing "competitive" metagames. Having watched many Doubles, LC, and Ubers games I have seen same patterns. (CAP and Threat Less so)

Piggybacking of that fact MOMPL should aim to pick metagames that will bring in a large playerbase that wants to play as the tournament is a for fun tournament to showcase metagames that rarley see tournament play. Based on that I am in favor of ADV being included as it will bring in more players. I also think DPP should be included if ADV is in as well as both are very similar metagames and should attract a large playerbase as I think most people who like ADV would also be interested in DPP.

Regarding expanding the format I am in favor if there are formats that attract players to play so we should be able to get enough signups to field 8 slots.

I am not sure of the formats but my question of what a Monotype OM is would need to be answered before I could even think of what metagames to include. My thoughts summed up pick metagames people are willing to play and establish a clear defention of what a Monotype OM is then we can talk about what to include.
