Welcome to the 2025 Monotype Cup Playoffs! This is what the different Monotype Cups have been leading up to, we now finally have our 16 playoff contestants. The whole tournament will be hosted in this thread. The winner of this tournament will receive a banner for winning Monotype Cup.

SPECIFIC RULES
  • The matchups are seeded and work identically to Monotype Circuit Playoffs. The higher seed player will choose the first generation played in each series. The loser of the game will pick the next generation played.
  • All rounds will be Best of Five.
  • This tournament will be SINGLE Elimination
  • Matches are to be played only on smogtours. All other servers will not count even if you win (including main, under the right circumstance exceptions to play on main exist)!
  • To encourage the development of the metagame, and so that everyone is on an even playing field, all matches must have replays recorded. If neither player posts or at least saves replays of the match, the game will be coin flipped regardless of whoever won.
  • MAKE SURE TO POST YOUR REPLAYS. ALL REPLAYS MUST BE POSTED IN THE THREAD FOR IT TO COUNT!

  1. Identity: I expect many battles to be completed under alts. This can be bad for tournament security, and thus I will make this clear: If I hear any whispers of identity theft (battling as someone you are not) or proxy battling (helping someone else battle through pm) I will not be pleased and I will take severe actions.
  2. Scouting: Next, I do not want to hear anything about counterteaming, at all. Do not complain about it. I also don't want to hear about any blatant scouting. There is a difference between "[user] is known for using Fire-type" and "let me follow [user] around all day to watch all his battles since I am his opponent". I expect a lot of the former and none of the latter. I give permission to all battlers to ask any person spectating their battle to leave if they do not want them watching. Everyone will have access to your replays from earlier rounds though.
  3. Timer Clause: As for taking long between moves, if your opponent asks you to hurry up, please oblige. If you are doing a damage calc for a key turn that is one thing, but prolonging every move is suspicious and annoying. Don't do it. Furthermore, Battle Timeout is a rule for a reason. If you run out of time, you lose, simple as that. It does not matter what your opponent says. Do not battle if you think you will have to leave mid battle, and instead reschedule for a better time.
  4. Disconnections: Finally, in the case of a disconnect, the decision is in the hands of the player who did not disconnect. The options are: redo the battle move for move, redo the battle with the same teams but different moves, or redo the battle with completely different teams. If the battle was without a doubt over, they may also take the win. Any suspicion that a disconnect was committed on purpose to redo a match may be appealed to me, and if I feel this happened there will be severe consequences, don't do it.

1. Jojo8868 vs 16. Neko - ive followed some of jojos games, and i was kind of surprised to see him pick some of the gens up well, particularly well. typically, i wouldn't hold much weight towards a first seed in these types of tours, but when someone has a 15 point lead on the next seed, that probably suggests that that person can play at a decent level. i have not followed neko too closely, only bits and pieces. i don't think its wrong to say that she may have some confidence issues? i do think that can be a somewhat decent deal, as that somewhat effected her in this past circuit playoffs. id assume things have improved since then though, they've recently won mwp and put up a respectable record of 4-5, while also going 1-1 in playoffs. id imagine winning a playoff game gave her a confidence boost, as well as winning the tb to get to this point. mentality aside, im not sure if i can favor them here. it just so happens her best gen of sv is one that jojo has looked strong in. id imagine both players weakest gens are sm, which is also a rough draw for neko. little bit of a knowledge gap here for 5-8, but its an interesting match up and still something neko can overcome. 65/35
2. Dj Breloominati♬ vs. 15. feen - my uupl teammates... anyway, i think you kind of have to bold dj here. ive grown to be a big dj believer in monotype; their playstyle is greatly complemented by the tier, and the only thing that holds them back sometimes is lapses of judgement in game. it is worth noting though, that their lapses of judgement, compared to the average player, still happens less often, which is one thing they have going for them. generally speaking, dj's aggression is something that should considered being analyzed if anyone wants to add something to their game. admittedly, i have not watched many feen games in recent times so it is hard to give a proper analysis here, but i do find it a bit hard to imagine that even if i watched their games that it would be enough for me to favor them here. 65/35
3. Tenebricite vs 14. Xiri - i consider these guys somewhat similar. both kind of give off those try to make those "objective correct" moves without making much mistakes type people, though xiri does give off more "clicky" vibes than tene. at the same time, i do think he makes more mistakes than him as well, which is the breaking point for me. on top of that, i have no idea where the hell xiri is supposed to get his teams here lmaooo, which may be a whole problem on its own. the same thing can be said for tene probably, though id imagine its not as likely. 60/40
4. Chaitanya vs 13. Gelbel3c - chait has been in a mostly respectable form recently, showing that he may not be washed after his mwp performance. he's one of the few that has real knowledge in all gens and generally has the right idea in teambuilding (more so than others), though there is potential for overcooking, particularly in ss and sv. i like watching gelbel play, i feel like his games are mostly respectable and doesn't use dogshit. there is a bit of a knowledge gap here in 6-9, but i don't think its to big of a deal. pretty close, but fundamentally i do believe chait is stronger and is more likely to exercise his ability to call shit out in game. 60/40
5. SBAP vs 12. dunoks - ive watched very few of sbaps cup games. there are mistakes here and there, but that's to be expected when playing gens you don't truly know. there is some signs of promise, and i remember seeing as such back in mwc 2023. of course, that was 2 years ago and things can change, but it is hard to see them pull a win here. i highly doubt dunoks knows what he's doing in the non ss gens, but im not sure if it really matters here? i think the skill gap may just show here, as well as the access to better teams part. 70/30
6. Showl vs 11. Dieu Amphibien - this would be dieu's second time qualifying for this tour, so you'd have to imagine he has a somewhat decent understanding on what goes on in each of the older gens. i don't have too much tournament knowledge on showl other than the fact that they won sm cup. i think they've been around since sm and maybe oras? which they have going for them. they did manage to put up 9 points in oras which is something, but they didn't get anything in sv, ss, and bw (albeit didn't sign up for this one). i do think they'll struggle in these gens, especially bw, but should be able to make things close, as dieu isn't known for 5-7. 60/40
7. Rio Vidal vs 10. Rex Slayer - maroon has been around enough to know what goes on in 5-8, which should be able to knowledge gap his opponent here. i feel like rex's experience in oldgens is mostly limited to the cups, which may be concerning as their point spread suggests there wasn't much pokemon being played to get a feel for the gens. they've probably played roomtours, but yeah lol i don't think that can cut it. there's also the access to good teams problem, which i can definitely see showing up here. 70/30
8. MemphisDepay vs 9. Cielau - cielau is probably one of the few new dudes who can play most of 5-7; an ideal trait to have if you want to win this tour. i suppose one of my main critiques that i have against cielau is the occasional poor judgement of a given game state. if they're behind, they kind of just don't do anything about it until it's too late, which ive seen hurt them a decent amount of times. just one of those players i feel that can do some cool things if he gains the ability to pull the plug and make something happen. i don't really know much about memphis, and honestly the only informtion i have on them other than their point spread is that i played them one time in stour, and even then i hardly remember that game. speaking of the point spread, it does kind of suggest that they may be owned in 5-7, but can put up a fight in 8-9. once again, access to good teams can prove to be a problem here. given these reasons, probably have to favor cielau 70/30

i plan to do more in-depth predictions in the next round since id have a decent amount of information on everyone as i haven't been following the individual cups much. rooting for jojo to show that the points record wasn't a fluke and that he can very well hang with the best in the tier, but would definitely be happy to potentially see my boy chait get his win here. lots of new names, which you gotta love for mono. GL everyone, may the best win

Act; I waited 15+ minutes after agreed upon time with no showing

Your time is definitely important and you are within the rules to make this act call. I do think as a competitor you should try to play if possible. He missed the time because of a mistake on his end reading scheduling, not because he was actually late.

Me and many others would enjoy seeing this set, but if you decide not to play then no worries you're within your right.
