Monotype Interviews #7 - Scarfire

:pmd/pawmi: royal :pmd/pawmi: | :pmd/meowscarada: Scarfire :pmd/meowscarada:

:pmd/pawmi:
First of all thanks for taking the time to do this, I'm sure the community will be interested in hearing from you, would you mind telling us a bit about yourself?

:pmd/meowscarada:
No problem Mr Reloaded. I guess to start off, I got into pokemon as a kid through the anime. I found PS during college when I was bored between classes sitting around for like 5 hours, and ended up just kind of making it a hobby. College ended up not working out, but unfortunately my time burning hobby of clicking games on the ladder has stuck with me to this day. I've made good friends on here, decided it would be best to keep playing. Outside of mons I'm currently just trying to look for a job and try to work my way back to school. Interested in teaching as a career mainly, but still considering my options.

:pmd/pawmi:
Very nice, how did you get the name Scarfire?

:pmd/meowscarada:
Ah, not that interesting of a story actually. I was torn between choosing Starfire or Scarlet for my name change when I was returning to mons. I decided on Scarlet but couldn't find any satisfying variation of the name available on PS. Thats why I just combined both and had Starfire Scarlet for a long while. After that I used to hang around smogon discord for quite a while and some people, mainly to be funny, just started combining the names to call me Scarfire. Figured I might as well commit to that, considering it would be a shorter and more conveniant name to go by, and its mildly more unique than Scarlet itself. I am fine with being called either one though.

:pmd/pawmi:
Do you have a favorite moment or memory that sticks out from your time on Smogon / PS?

:pmd/meowscarada:
Easily the tiebreak to get into Smogon Tour top 16 lol. Probably the only time I had eyes on me considering me a strong player. Woke up, cranked out 2 sets and beat both my opponents and felt like a boss. Blunder uploaded it, bunch of older friends who I hadn't seen in years hit me up to give me props, teams afterward actually showed interest in me, etc. Felt good. Unfortunately since then I have blundered that peak, most tournaments I participated in after were SVOU based, and that gen is not my strong suit. I'm hoping to do better this year onwards, starting with the Smogon Masters that just went up. A grand return, hopefully. My end goal is to win either Smogon Tour or Smogon Masters. Hopefully one of these years...

:pmd/pawmi:
What would you do if you were tier leader for a day? You arent allowed to say banning Flutter Mane.

:pmd/meowscarada:
Ah, shame...my main goal stolen. Beyond just banning/unbanning shit I guess maybe making the type VR a resource would be something I'd like to do. I know they exist after a gen ends, but I feel like 99% of the time the "what types are good" question are asked, its during current gen. I'd like to give that resource to players actively throughout the gen, and just update it as we go.Aside from Flutter Mane, I might push for Gliscor and Zamazenta to be tested. Oh and retesting Palafin. Won't be elaborating on that last one.

:pmd/pawmi:
Speaking of, would you mind filling this out? (type tier list) And feel free to include any thoughts on placements.

Off the top of my head I suppose. I actually did one last night and put ground lower, got hounded for it and have re-evaluated. I think the S rank types are the most versatile, and have near perfect cores that cover for their strong pieces like Gliscor and Gholdengo. Nearly flawless.Dragon is similarly versatile and IMO has no all out "bad matchups", but sometimes has random individual mons its hopeless against. Fairy others have contested me for putting so high, but I genuinely think it can beat anything out the gate. B tier is mostly the types I think can win against the S-A tier types, but aren't actively prepped for themselves due to lack of consistency. C is what I would call "usable garbage". Poison can irritate certain teams, ice is funny if you use fat lefties Kyurems with Snow+Veil, and bug just has some demonic threats stacked w/webs. The D tiers I don't feel like I need to explain.

:pmd/pawmi:
Do you have any advice for some players who are newer and trying to get more involved with the community / better at the game? What about someone who wants to get drafted for MWP for the first time?

:pmd/meowscarada:
Ask for help is number 1. It took me so much time to finally just hit up somebody better at the game to look over my games/teams, and I think my skill as a player might've like tripled as a result. Going over tournament games with someone better also helps. Its one thing to have your own games reviewed, which can teach you what NOT to do, but watching better players play and having someone analyze them with you can help you learn how you should be thinking about the game.Beyond that, there is no shortcuts. Play a lot, ladder, do the seasonals, you'll improve and make friends/connections, people will notice you overtime and you'll reach your goals. Also, don't be discouraged if you think you're doing well but dont make it into the tour you are aiming for. You'll come back next year 10 times better at the game, guarantee it.

:pmd/pawmi:
That's very good advice. do you have a team that you wouldnt mind sharing that you think showcases your style of play / building best?

:pmd/meowscarada:

These 2 teams from ss ou and sm ou come to mind I guess, both built more recently. Im very very bulky-offence oriented. I just slap on a couple threatening pivots, and answer the rest of my problems with fast button-clickers.

My mono builder is lacking right now due to my laziness, but a dark team I built yesterday falls perfectly in line with this way of building I have. https://pokepast.es/237eeff3a2b8397d Hazard stacking, button mashing, with 1-2 mons to fall back on in a bad situation. Fun way to play, isn't as balls-to-the-walls clicky as pure hyper offence, but not painfully slow like balance/fat can be either (I don't mind the latter much either, but its not my preferred way to play).

:pmd/pawmi:
What was your favorite MPL or MWP team that you have been apart of, and why?

:pmd/meowscarada:
I'll say the Zoroarks from this year, yeah we didn't win but I liked everyone on the team, and the helpers we added later included almost all my friends as well so we had a blast I think. I would be willing to team with all of them again if possible. Not much else I can say really, a team of all your buddies is bound to be a favourite.

:pmd/pawmi:
Is there anyone, past or present player, who you havent teamed with that you would really like to?

:pmd/meowscarada:
Boomp, I failed to grab my boy in MPL and will not be letting that slide again. Great presence, good friend, and does so much work for any team hes on. Just a missed opportunity all around not getting him. This mistake Will be corrected in MWP.

:pmd/pawmi:
Well, those are all the questions I have, thanks so much for your time. Before we end, is there anybody you would like to give a shoutout to? any friends or teammates you've met along the way? anybody you think is up and coming?

:pmd/meowscarada:
Friends and teammates would be all the same after this recent MPL. Everyone on Zoroarks of course, and the people I still talk to often like boomp, sasha, FadedCharm, Cell, style.css, Leafium Z and so on. Would also like to give a shoutout to Attribute and Trichotomy for taking me last MPL and letting me get that first big win, wouldn't have made it further without that. I'll even shoutout Vodoom for being the only guy who actually argues with me about this metagame....it is fun sometimes. For up and coming players, I enjoyed watching Sunnyboi0 play during MFPL, his play is solid and hes beaten my ass a number of times in NDM. Whitespaniard isn't exactly unknown, and he got into MPL this year, but similarly I enjoyed his mfpl games and talking to him, he seems to be a Smart Guy. Excited to see both of those dudes go further. Lastly, not a mono player but my buddy cyberacc. He is responsible for holding up my folding mental state when it comes to both mons tilt and irl stress. That guy is the goat. I'm definitely missing like 100 people I could shoutout, I genuinely have made good friends with so many of you, so please don't take it personal if you weren't mentioned lol I'm just a bit lazy.

This thread will remain open in case anyone would like to ask Scarfire any further questions. If you have an idea for who you would like to be interviewed next, please don't hesitate to let me know!

This blatant lie and defamation of my image will not be tolerated. If I was smart you would be hearing from my lawyer about this, but im the type of person to click poltergeist twice onto a mon whose balloon I already popped before I realize what’s happening, so luckily for you I lack the intelligence to do that.

My question for you is, if you had to do a singular test game or quit Pokémon forever, which would you choose?

Woo Scarfire interview

If you could redo one turn in any tournament game you played, which would you choose?

Can you summarize your playstyle in one word?

For each of the three types you put in D tier (Rock, Grass, Electric), can you name one Pokemon that was legal in a previous gen that would improve their type the most if they were legal now?

Having a cup of coffee might asw answer some of these while im chilling.

i got tagged for a scarlet interview....worst day of my life...

whats your favorite food and your best played game in monotype

Favourite food; there was a vietnamese place I used to frequent in Paris that had a banger satay beef noodle soup. I used to always ask for more and more spice, and each time they would try their best to give me food poisoning. Was awesome, best shit ever.

Best played game in monotype is tough, I can't even remember all my games lol. I guess for now I can say best game played last MPL; I'd like to say semis, my steel mirror game vs Achimoo. Brain activated and I feel like I got every turn right. If only I kept that quality throughout the tour, but oh well.

Why’d you pick the furry mon

I like Meowscarada. Masquerade specifically reminds me of the villain from Bakugan season 1, also named Masquerade. Cool character.

My bad G. Anyways, probably quit forever. On a real I ladder a lot to keep my gameplay sharp regardless of my desire to test teams, I promise I'm not being lazy.

Good ass questions wth. Anyways, for the turn in a tournament game, I guess turn 9 against Style in MPL semifinals this year ( https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen9monotype-780872 ) . I spent a lot of the game successfully bluffing scarf, had I just stayed in and clicked knock off, I either would've caught the Pult/Latias trying to switch into scarf CC, or sacked Tusk and got a free turn w/balloon Sneasler. I genuinely just..forgot??? that I had been bluffing scarf. I rly hate making out-of-game excuses, but I genuinely was just tired and messed up in judgement/memory. Would like to have been able to redo that.

Playstyle in one word; Slow.

For rock, Mega Diancie seems like an obvious one, but I think Shuckle would also maybe be a welcome addition. For grass, Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn both can't rly be contested as answers. Electric obviously Tapu Koko would be the difference between D tier to A tier lol.

retesting palafin is a crazy statement

Water is mid and that mons switch-out gimmick in monotype is surely rly bad. Also idk if it necessarily "checks boxes" in teambuilding, so surely its not that good :copium: Worth a test one day, when the tier is chilling.
