First of all thanks for taking the time to do this, I'm sure the community will be interested in hearing from you, would you mind telling us a bit about yourself?

I'm in my twenties, and I’m from the south of France. Among Pokémon, my favorite is Lugia. I grew up with SoulSilver, and it’s the game that left the biggest impression on me, with its legendary guardian of the seas. Its origin story only made me appreciate it more. Besides Pokémon, I have to admit that my hobbies are somewhat limited because of my job, which takes up a lot of my daily life. However, astronomy remains an important passion for me. At times, it’s really nice to just look up at the sky. I also have a strong interest in art history, and, of course, I enjoy manga and anime.

How did you get the name Ota / Otakout?

“Ota” comes from a shortened version of “otaku.” My friends chose it for me because I’m a bit absent-minded and passionate about manga; it was the first thing that came to their minds. Over time, I grew to appreciate this nickname. I’m definitely an "otaku," and it reminds me of otters, animals I find cute, so I added “’out” to my nickname because I wanted something unique and funny.

How did you get introduced to the monotype community? Do you have a favorite moment or memory that sticks out from your time on Smogon / PS?

I discovered the Monotype community in the most ordinary way possible within the French community: I was contacted by Firnen. He kindly invited me to explore the tier and get involved with other players on Discord. That’s where I had the chance to take my first steps. It was only later that I interested on Smogon. As for memorable moments, I’d say my first BLT was especially unforgettable. I discovered the world of team tournaments through this event, and it left a lasting impression on me. The fun, creative, yet serious atmosphere of a first tournament is an invaluable experience. I also had a great time during the MWP and, more recently, the MFPL, where I had the chance to play again with players I like and meet new people.

What would you do if you were the tier leader for a day?

If I were the tier leader for a day, I think I’d immediately launch a suspect test for Gouging Fire. For some time now, I’ve found it really problematic in the meta. Whether it’s with its defensive Dragon Dance set or in sun, it turns out to be a real nightmare to handle. This Pokémon can almost single-handedly turn matches around, and I think it’s necessary to account for it in every team build. On the other hand, I wouldn’t unban any Pokémon. Even though I wasn’t completely convinced by the ban of Kingambit at the time, I have to admit that the tier is enjoyable to play without it.

Do you have some advice for newer players who are looking to get more integrated with the community?
Do not be like me: be consistent and build connections with other players! I think many new players (especially since I was in their shoes) are intimidated and afraid they won’t fit in, but it’s actually quite simple. The Monotype community on Smogon is truly one of the most welcoming and tight-knit communities I’ve had the chance to be part of. By being active and interacting with others, you’ll reach your goals in the game while having the most fun possible.

Tell us about your win in the low tier ladder tournament. What was the most difficult aspect of laddering? Who was the most difficult opponent to prepare for in the playoff stage? Do you have a favorite team from the tournament that you wouldn't mind sharing with us?

My victory in the Low Tier Ladder Tournament was an intense and surprising experience. Honestly, I'm an average player, and luck definitely played a big role. Laddering has never been my strong suit, as I tend to lose focus quickly and stop thinking strategically when I play match after match. For me, the biggest challenge was sticking to a set team and resisting the urge to change everything after each loss or when facing difficult matchups. I had gotten used to playing Psychic, but I completely dropped it after Espathra was banned; the type just didn’t hold much appeal anymore.
In this tournament, my two toughest opponents to prepare for were Lavarina and Khahara. I usually approach my opponents based on what I know about their dominant play styles and habits, but this time, I didn’t know much about them. So I had to spend time analyzing their replays and studying the teams they had used in previous matches. This preparation really helped me get a clearer idea of their strategies and allowed me to win against some talented players.
Throughout the tournament, there was one team I particularly enjoyed, even though it wasn’t mine: a Bug team built around Choice Specs Yanmega. I’ve been fond of Yanmega since Generation 5, so the idea of playing it again in the current meta immediately appealed to me. Coupled with Sticky Web and a defensive Volcarona, Yanmega becomes formidable and can put heavy pressure on most of the teams I encountered during the tournament. This team can handle almost any matchup, though it struggles against Poison teams or mirror matches with other Bug teams. Here’s the paste of the team: https://pokepast.es/8e17b248a5937d67
"I think if there’s one Pokémon that perfectly defines the Low Tier Ladder Tournament, it’s Arcanine-Hisui. It has a lot of potential, but its dual typing holds it back from truly shining. It would be the ideal Pokémon to feature in sprite form on the thread." Ota on why he chose Arcanine for his sprite.

What type of unique tournament would you like to see next?

I’d like to see a somewhat similar tournament that highlights less commonly played types or forgotten Pokémon, like we tried to do with Mono UU.

Well, those are all the questions I have for you today. Thank you so much for your time and your thoughtful answers? Is there anyone you would like to give a shoutout to?

There are so many people I should thank. French community as a whole, of course, but especially Elyoss, who is a very good friend. He has always supported and helped me; he's a gold person. I also want to mention style.css, Leafium Z, Neko, plunder, and mushamu, whom I deeply appreciate. And I’m surely forgetting many others, who I hope will forgive me.
