Monotype Rising Sets
:sv/ogerpon wellspring:
:sv/iron moth:
:sv/wo-chien:

Welcome to the tenth edition of the Monotype Rising Sets that aims to unveil the future of Monotype. You have been using an unknown set for a long time or have just thought about a new way of using a Pokémon? Come sharing your findings with the community!

This event will be run in the form of a contest. You will have 2 weeks to submit ONE set of your choosing for whichever Pokémon, before a poll is launched in the Monotype room to determine the winning set.

Rules:
  • Only one post per person is allowed.
  • Both the Pokémon and the set you want to feature are up to you.
  • A set is valid if and only if it does not exist in the Monotype SV SmogDex.
  • Item/Move-swap sets are not allowed, unless they change fundamentally the way the Pokémon is used.
  • You may import your set from your PS! teambuilder or write it down.
  • Your set proposition must include the following elements: set, description, potential teammates, and either replays or damage calculations.
  • Replays and damage calculations must showcase the set's uniqueness, so choose them wisely.
  • Please convey the uniqueness of your set while avoiding emphatic language ("It's the greatest set ever!")
  • Do not react to other submitted sets in your post, focus on yours.
Hereunder you will find the accepted format for submissions as well as an example of accepted and rejected sets.

Name of the set + Pokémon name + (Type) (ex: "Choice Specs Dragapult (Dragon)")

(you may import the set directly from your PS! teambuilder)

- move 1
- move 2
- move 3
- move 4

Set Description

Describe what your set is achieving, which niche does it fill? Why is it interesting in the current metagame?

Teammates

Describe who would be the ideal teammates to surround it with which set.

Replays OR Damage calculations (doing both is accepted)

2. xxx
3. xxx

They should be commented and help you to make your point.

Barraskewda @ Choice Band
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Flip Turn
- Close Combat
- Poison Jab

Changing one coverage move by another does not change the way the set is used, it is still Choice Band Barraskewda inside.
Barraskewda @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Muscle Band
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Flip Turn
- Close Combat
- Psychic Fangs

By swapping Choice Band with HdB or Muscle Band, the way the pokémon is used drastically changes. Now Barraskewda acts as an Offensive Pivot, which comes with its own perks. Changing the moveset is not mandatory, but it does not mean the moveset should be lazily copy/pasted from an existing set. Your moveset should always be backed up with arguments.

Rewards:
  • ^ rank on Monotype room for a month
  • The winning set will be featured in the Monotype room
  • Addition of the set in the SmogDex

If you feel the heart of a builder, come sharing your best craft with the community!

Deadline for set submission is January 28th @ 11:59pm GMT-5

The Set: Choice Band Ting Lu(Ground)
Ting-Lu @ Choice Band
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 124 HP / 252 Atk / 132 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Payback/Throat Chop
- Earthquake
- Heavy Slam
- Stone Edge
Other Options: Body Press can be used because it also gains a boost from choice band,Throat chop can be used to hit pokemon on the switch harder

Set Overview
The Idea of this set is on ground, you can afford to run a choice band,Changing Ting Lu from a hazard setter to a bulky attacker.
The speed investment is specfically to outspeed uninvested swampert, and uninvested tyranitar
Ting Lu can function on sand as a way to ease the battle against trick room strats
Throat Chop can be used over payback due to targets switching around more

Teammates:
Hippowdon or gliscor work as a entry hazard setter in place of ting lu
Landorus Incarnate is good for being a special breaker to work with ting lu
Sandy Shocks with Reflect and Light Screen could potentially work(it learns both moves)

Calculations:
252+ Atk Ting-Lu Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Enamorus: 342-404 (118.3 - 139.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Ting-Lu Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 224+ Def Pelipper: 236-278 (73 - 86%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Ting-Lu Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ninetales-Alola in Snow with an ally's Aurora Veil: 324-382 (92.5 - 109.1%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Ting-Lu Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 330-390 (108.9 - 128.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Poison Spreader Revavroom (steel) :Revavroom:
Revavroom @ Air Balloon
Ability: Filter
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- High Horsepower
- Toxic
- Parting Shot

Revavroom has a few unique qualities among steel types that allow it to carve out a niche and allow for a team that goes all in on the passive damage strategy. Toxic spikes forces the opponent into tricky scenarios if they have a poison type on their team, or to rack up damage if they don't, and toxic hits flying pokemon or those who have heavy duty boots. Parting shot is the other key in this setup as it allows for revavroom to exit the field while weakening the opponent, which can make life much easier for revavroom's teamates to take hits, allowing for more posion damage. High horsepower is the final move, allowing for some utility when faced with poison and steel types who otherwise don't care about the set at all. We go for max speed in order to outspeed as much of the metagame as possible, most notably excadrill and speed tying with other base 90 mons. The rest goes into hp in order to maximise survivability, which when combined with filter mean that outside of sun boosted STAB fire moves very little is killing revavroom in one hit. This set does well into very bulky sets that steel would otherwise struggle to deal with, such as ting lu and mandibuzz on dark, or teams that have no way to remove hazards such as typical dragon setups.
Teamates that revavroom appriciates the most are very bulky ones to take adavantage of the poison, such as skarmory and goodra-h, gholdengo is also very helpful in order to prevent hazard removal and can take advantage of status'd opponents by running a hex set

Calcs to show how bulky the car is
252 Atk Choice Band Sneasler Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Revavroom: 322-379 (88.4 - 104.1%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Volcarona Fiery Dance vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Filter Revavroom: 279-330 (76.6 - 90.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Disrupting Desirous Jirachi (Steel)
Jirachi @ Shuca Berry / Kasib Berry / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Doom Desire
- Psychic Noise
- Encore
- Thunder Wave / U-Turn

/ Healing Wish / Grass Knot / Psyshock / Stealth Rock / Wish / buncha stuff t-wave is best to catch stuff you force to switch out eith encore. Psychock is for Gallade, GKnot for Ting Lu, wouldn't slot on physical coverage, u-turn would be amazing to pivot with this set and is the only other option I would really consider. likely condense list to that.

I'd like to propose a Jirachi set which strikes the perfect line between the spirit of this competition, something actually new, and a helpful set which could viably help in some of Steel's toughest MU's.

We've been seeing a resilient, definitely-not-washed version of steel throughout this MWP, and this Jirachi set helps handle Fighting and Water, two of it's toughest matchups, more effectively.

add replays destroying fighting
add water repaly mwp
add rain replay ladder
try and get more footage of encoring replays

post important eq live calc / sequences showing you beat clod / gliscor
mention kasib / balloon / boots all other good item options

this is the perfect set to target fatter builds relying on healing, stops sub bird nonsense, stops sucker punch sweepers if you get this in proactively, is a beast and original and deserves respect. this is fent cheese, but guess what, you leave cheese out for long enough it might just turn uhh delicious. Fent Corp fired their Mold Specialist

Physically Defensive Eviolite :Qwilfish-H: (Dark)
Qwilfish-Hisui @ Eviolite
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Toxic / Toxic Spikes
- Spikes
- Taunt
- Haze
Toxic Spikes can be run over Toxic if you need more long-term poison.

Overview
The main point of this set is to run Qwilfish as a lead which can setup without taking major damage. Taunt is to block stuff such as Volcarona from setting up too early. Toxic punishes leads such as the aforementioned Volcarona and others from switching in for 'free'. Haze blocks Pokemon that switched in after Qwilfish left the field from their setup, which if needed, Qwilfish can usually tank. Spikes is a 'duh' option. Speed EVs ensure to outspeed leads that could potentially harm its setup, allowing it to Taunt defoggers and such. Yay!

Teammates
:Ting-Lu: (no this is NOT sponsors for TheShowdownHero) can stealth rock things.
:Meowscarada: and :Greninja: because, well, duh. Damage. They capitalize on the hazards to deal even more damage.
:Scrafty: Capitalizes with D-Dance, surviving the hits of opposing (most likely poisoned) pokemon before delivering a big damage output.
:Sableye: Adds screens.
:Mandibuzz: Defog.
The set I usually run is :Qwilfish-Hisui:, :Meowscarada:, :Greninja:, :Sableye:, :Ting-Lu:, and :Scrafty: for a defensive team with 2 hard hitters.

Other Options
Barb Barrage allows Qwilfish to be more offensive.
Sacrifice Defense EVs for at least 200 Atk and you'll be able (if u get lucky) to 2HKO Losecon-Z's Dragonite with Scale Shot (5 hits) (Assuming it's been Stealth Rocked.)
Destiny Bond to become Froslass 2.0
Icy Wind for a funny little prank

Calculations
252 SpA Expert Belt Enamorus Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Qwilfish-Hisui: 262-310 (78.4 - 92.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(Modified to make it 150 Special Attack for flair. This is only Whiscash at 0.01% power. Originally a Enamorus calc.) 252 SpA Expert Belt Whiscash Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Qwilfish-Hisui: 283-334 (84.7 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO (my fav calc)

The point is, anything (assuming it's a speed nature and not special nature) around 150 base special attack can't one-shot this being. But what about boosts?

+1 252 SpA Keldeo Surf vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Qwilfish-Hisui: 237-279 (70.9 - 83.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+6 252+ SpA Comfey Draining Kiss vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Qwilfish-Hisui: 283-334 (84.7 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO (my 2nd fav calc)

Point is, despite having no Special Defense investment, it can tank a BUNCH of hits on that side.

Physical here:
252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 220 Def Eviolite Qwilfish-Hisui: 200-236 (59.8 - 70.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 4 Atk Scrafty Drain Punch vs. 252 HP / 220 Def Eviolite Qwilfish-Hisui: 90-106 (26.9 - 31.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Iron Valiant Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 220 Def Eviolite Qwilfish-Hisui: 195-231 (58.3 - 69.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

ill see if i can get any replays cuz i got this account on a non-goguardian device :D (will only be able to grind tuesday and thursday)

Since Zarude does not have a Dark set, I feel like it is really overlooked. Technically the same-ish set exists for Grass but their matchup importance are different on each type.

:sv/Zarude:

Set:
Swords Dance Zarude (Dark)
Zarude @ Life Orb / Miracle Seed
Ability: Leaf Guard
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Power Whip
- Knock Off
- Close Combat / Rock Slide
- Swords Dance

Description
While Meowscarada is the primary threat for Water teams on Dark, it heavily struggles to get past Toxapex. You need to switch into Bisharp which gets threatened by Urshifu-R and Hisuian Samurott, or Choice Specs Greninja to potentially OHKO it with Extrasensory, which opposing Greninja and the aforementioned Hisuian Samurott are immune to, forget about getting past Empoleon. Water is a very scary matchup for Dark due to all of the Pokemon I've mentioned so far and more such as Primarina, Barraskewda, Ogerpon-W, and so on.

Zarude's Speed tier outpaces Urshifu-R, Primarina, Manaphy, and non-Choice Scarf Hisuian Samurott and it's essential Grass-typing is huge, it can be difficult to revenge kill. It's also got surprisingly decent bulk, allowing it to live Play Rough from Ogerpon-W, Sludge Wave from Choice Scarf Greninja, Hurricane from defensive Pelipper, and Draco Meteor from Choice Specs Kingdra. Zarude is impossible to defend on Water without it's dedicated revenge-killers. After a Swords Dance and Life Orb/Miracle Seed boosting Power Whip, there is not a single Pokemon on Water teams that can survive a hit except Toxapex (Dondozo mentioned later), even after using Haze and clearing Zarude's Swords Dance boost, and Life Orb even has an 81% chance to get OHKO after Stealth Rock damage if the Toxapex user opted for Black Sludge instead of Heavy-Duty Boots. Power Whip and Miracle Seed also guarantee a 2HKO against physically defensive Dondozo.

Power Whip Life Orb has an 81% chance to OHKO physically defensive Gliscor after Stealth Rock chip, and a 94% chance to OHKO against pivot Landorus-T after Intimidate, guaranteed after Stealth Rock damage. This also proves Zarude can be useful against another prominent and threatening type: Flying. Knock Off after a Swords Dance 2HKOs physically defensive Corviknight and Skarmory, OHKOs Tornadus-T, OHKOs Articuno, and 2HKOs Dragonite at full health. Additionally, Zarude lives Brave Bird from Corviknight, Body Press from Skarmory, Hurricane from Tornadus-T without maximum Special Attack investment, Freeze Dry from Articuno, as well as Extreme Speed twice from Choice Band Dragonite (Outrage is a 44% chance to OHKO but doesn't have a chance to let it off if Multiscale is broken by Stealth Rock). Rock Slide OHKOs Moltres after a Swords Dance and lives a Flamethrower. Additionally, OHKOs Enamorus and Galarian Moltres, however, Enamorus outpaces and has a 62% chance to OHKO Zarude with a Moonblast so much more effective against a Choice-locked set as Superpower and Mystical Fire 2HKO and Zarude still OHKOs after +1 Def boost from Superpower and Contrary.

Close Combat confirms OHKO on Heatran as Knock Off is only a 75% chance after Swords Dance. Also OHKOs Hydreigon, Roaring Moon (U-turn is a 31% chance to OHKO but still relevant), Bisharp, Archaludon, and every Fighting-weak Steel-type. This allows Zarude to entirely clear Steel teams as it does live Choice Scarf Gholdengo's Focus Blast though Rocky Helmet chip from Skarmory and Life Orb recoil are concerns, try to catch Skarmory on a switch with Knock Off and if it can't get an Iron Defense up against your Swords Dance boost, its hard to lose.

Zarude has a lot more favourable matchups for Dark teams but these seem to be the primary ones on paper and what I'ved faced so far. Fire ironically struggles as Ogerpon-H, Cinderace, and any other Choice Scarf user are the only ones who outpace while Stealth Rock incapacitates Ceruledge's Focus Sash. Ground is an instant win although Dark already usually does well in that matchup, Choice Scarf Landorus doesn't OHKO with Sludge Wave, Mamoswine's Ice Shard 2HKOs, Choice Band Excadrill's Poison Jab 2HKOs, Choice Scarf Garchomp Fire Blast 2HKOs. Choice Scarf Great Tusk is the one concern. Lots of the Dragon-types common on Dragon teams have been mentioned and it's a good breaker but Dragapult's Will-O-Wisp is scary, Choice Specs Latios has a chance to OHKO with Draco Meteor, and Kommo-o albeit not as common is a threat.

Teammates:
Alolan Muk is a huge teammate to handle Choice Specs Greninja, Enamorus, Tornadus-T with maximum Special Attack investment, Choice Scarf Gholdengo, Choice Specs Hisuian Zoroark (Fun fact: Zarude lives Focus Blast from any unboosted/Choice Scarf set), and other revenge killing special attackers that would just deal too much for Zarude to handle if using Life Orb due to chip.

Ting-Lu's Stealth Rock and additionally helpful Spikes are critical for some of the damage rolls and general wallbreaking, also a nice pivot for Tornadus-T, Choice Scarf Gholdengo, etc.

Choice Scarf Greninja compliments it by taking out mentioned faster targets, pivoting, clean up.

Sableye brings a good Fighting-type immunity especially against Choice Scarf Great Tusk in the Ground matchup, burn chip from Will-O-Wisp, opportunities to get Zarude in via Encore.

Mandibuzz's Defog helps mitigate extra chip if running Life Orb, U-turn support.

Meowscarada can for sure be used alongside Zarude though they overlap in what they hit, however, Choice Scarf Meowscarada is great against Dragon via Triple Axel and Play Rough and has a great Speed tier.

Defensive Calculations:
252 Atk Wellspring Mask Ogerpon-Wellspring Play Rough vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zarude: 214-254 (60.9 - 72.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Protean Greninja Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zarude: 276-326 (78.6 - 92.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Kingdra Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zarude: 292-345 (83.1 - 98.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

12 Atk Corviknight Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zarude: 224-266 (63.8 - 75.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Def Skarmory Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zarude: 194-230 (55.2 - 65.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 SpA Articuno Freeze-Dry vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zarude: 152-180 (43.3 - 51.2%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zarude: 141-166 (40.1 - 47.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 SpA Sheer Force Landorus Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zarude: 258-304 (73.5 - 86.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Offensive Calculations:

Here's a team I had a lot of success with:

https://pokepast.es/f196129bb510b214

I genuinely have no replays because I've been using this team and also a lot of other iterations for a bit now and just discovered this project actually existed, if I feel like it I can update the post with replays if I use the team more.
