More Skary! (Get it, like scary, but it's spelled like Skarmory? Get it?)

More Skary

The original idea for this team was to use a Calm Mind Latios to sweep teams. I wanted to build a team that would take out all of his counters. and then use Latios to take out the rest of the team! However, the team didn't work out so well, and I have made many changes to it. I'm building a standard, but bulky team that works well with Skarmory.

Yeah, this team was pretty terrible. I had absolutely NOTHING to counter Reuniclus. Latios wasn't as tanky as I had hoped, and Breloom didn't really do a lot for me. I know he's great, but I he just didn't seem to mesh well with this team. Then I changed it to its current state:

Strangely enough, I haven't found fire moves that troubling so far. I've probably just gotten lucky that I haven't gone up against any major fire threats though. At the same time, I rarely bring Vaporeon in, it seems like. But on to my current problem: Latias. Tyranitar comes in and uses pursuit. Opponent lols while I cry. My problem is probably that I had been using a weird EV set (HP and Speed... yeah it's pretty weird). I actually like the moveset, but I've kind of decided I'm over Latias. I want something else there. I'm also open to switching Magnezone. He kills Ferrothorn nicely, but perhaps someone else could fill his space since Shaymin already handles steels well (A more effective lead, probably).

Other than those two though, the main core of Shaymin, Skarmory, Vaporeon, and Scizor handles a LOT of threats.

After some suggestions, I decided to use Nidoking as my special sweeper. His coverage is ridiculous coupled by the fact that he gets no life orb recoil. Very nice. Rotom-W is there to counter things like Volcarona that would otherwise be free to sweep my team. I replaced Vaporeon for Jellicent to give my team a counter to stall teams.

In Depth

Skarmory (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Roost
- Whirlwind
- Spikes
- Brave Bird

Skarmory will usually be my lead. His main goal is to set up spikes and phase set-up physical sweepers while walling them. He can come in on Ghost and Dark moves that would otherwise plague Jellicent. His phazing is incredibly potent.

Shaymin @ Leftovers Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Seed Flare
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Rest

My first part to the core of special walls. Shaymin gets great coverage with this moveset while still being able to deal damage. Hidden Power [Fire] is there to surprise steel types that love to come in on him. By the time I need to rest, I'll probably need to switch out anyways.

Jellicent (M) @ Leftovers Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Surf
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Taunt

Lol stall teams. Jellicent is the second part of my special wall core, and isn't afraid to take physical hits either. Taunt is for handling those oh so nice stall teams. I pick Surf over Scald because it's seems dumb to me to have both Scald and Will-O-Wisp on the same moveset. Jellicent is bulky enough to handle physical fire types and kill them with Surf and Recover stalling.

Nidoking (M) @ Life Orb Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Earth Power
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt

Rawr. This is my main special sweeper. His moveset is made the way it is so that he will have amazing coverage. He can hit just about every wall in the game with a super effective move. Blissey should be taken care of by Scizor, so don't mention that thing. XD

Rotom-W @ Leftovers Trait: Levitate
EVs: 124 HP / 252 SAtk / 132 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Pain Split

A bit bulky, a lot more so sweepy. Rotom-W just laughs in everyone's face. Good coverage and pain split for healing. He's here to put the hurt on Volcarona and do some great electric damage to those annoying bulky waters. It's always good to have a backup plan for that. :D

Scizor (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Superpower
- Pursuit

Bye bye Reuniclus! Scizor is my psychic counter, and in a way, my calm mind counter. Pursuit is not just useful for psychic types; it's also useful for putting the hurt on Chansey and Blissey as they switch out. It's very easy to think them into a false sense of security and pound out a Superpower the next time they switch in. U-turn and Bullet Punch are very obvious standards for Scizor.

Lil bump. Also, don't be afraid to name unusual pokemon. I don't mind it being the most effective ever, it just needs to work well with this team.

P.S. Just saw Nidoking on someone else's RMT. Would he be good with this team as the special sweeper?

I was just about to suggest Nidoking. I think he has some nice synergy with your team.

Ground you have Skarm, vaporeon, and shaymin.
Psychic you have your defenses
Ice you have your steal types and vaporeon
Water you have vaporeon.

so you basically have his weaknesses covered. I would use the Sheer Force set for obvious reasons.

name: Special Attacker
move 1: Earth Power
move 2: Fire Blast
move 3: Ice Beam / Shadow Ball
move 4: Thunderbolt / Focus Blast
item: Life Orb
ability: Encourage
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 Def

With Sheer Force nidoking you get awesome sp. attack, you don't have to set up, and you don't take life orb damage.

Wow, that set sounds amazing. Of course, this would cause my team to transition into a dream world team, but that's perfectly fine. Any suggestions on what to do with Magnezone?

And great minds think alike. :D

I'd consider replacing Magnezone with a Rotom W which still gives you the ability to check other water types with Thunderbolt, while also hitting pokemon such as Heatran and Volcarona with Hydro Pump

Oh goodness. I didn't even think about having a Volcarona counter. I think I'l do that. Should I put Rotom-W as lead or maybe Nidoking to go all out offensive?

seeing as (thanks to team preview) there are no real fixed leads personally i'd put Skarmory as your default lead (thanks to it setting up Spikes) and have Nidoking and Rotom W as offensive members. The main issue with your team currently is that it lacks a way to break stall, on the other hand you need to check Volcarona and SDefHheatran with Toxic which currently threatens a large part of your team. I'll edit my post hopefully with a better suggestion as i have uni about now

If you're going to transition into DW, you could also try Scarf/Specs Chandelure as a replacement trapper over Magnezone, still allowing you to kill Steels and much more.

Steels really aren't a problem for the most part. I'm thinking I'll get Jellicent over Vaporeon. He still offers good bulk, but he can use Taunt to counter stall teams. He does it super well, too.

O.k after a bit of thought you clearly have issues with powerful Fire types as well as the simple Skarm/Bliss core which walls you pretty well. First ly I am going to agree with the suggestion to use Jellicent over Vaporeon. Jellicent causes you to lose a bit of physical bulk however Jellicent gives you a spinblocker so you can keep your spikes up for as long as possible. In addition, it can also burn the Tyrantiar switch in meaning Latias does not fear Pursuit as much

Jellicent @ Leftovers
Cursed Body
Bold
248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spe
-Scald
-Will-o-wisp
-Recover
-Taunt

Jellicetn does patch up your weaknesses quite nicely however I don't see the need for Magnezone. Scizor is now nicely covered by Skarmory and Jellicent, Metagross is not seen too often and Jirachi often has Fire Punch so Maggy does not win then either. Personally, I would run the very thing you yourself suggested, a (mixed) Thundurus. Thundurus gives you a second weapon against stall threatening Blissey and Tyrantiar with a super effective Hammer Arm while still being able to hit hard from the special side with a STAB Thunderbolt.

Thundurus @LO
Prankster
Naive
32 Atk / 224 SpA / 252 Spe
-Thunderbolt
-Hammer Arm
-HP Ice
-Taunt

With these changes you should be able to handle both Stall and Fire types more effectively. You can still keep your Latias set (the Evs are fine I use them myself) although I guess a CM Reuniclus can also work there if needed.

Gah, you posted right after I started editing. XD So should I switch Rotom-W to Thundurus? I might have been playing bad when I was using Latias (still new to the 5th gen haha). But I think Reuniclus sounds better just because of Focus Sash. it's something I'll have to think over. So Nidoking back to Latias, Rotom-W to Thundurus?

yeah sorry for that inconvenience. Note that if you do end up using Reuniclus then don't run Focus Sash since Reuniclus is bulky enough to take hits anyway. Run 252 HP 252 Def Bold with leftovers

With a few things weak to fire I think Rotom-W is just fine with grass being its only weakness. Funnily enough you also got fire blast, and 2 pokemon with hp fire. Why so much especially with all the rain teams? Change one to something else like ice. IMO Scald and will o wisp work well together!
