Despite the large amount of Poison-types and even more Toxic users in the metagame, Muk still finds a place as a niche Toxic staller. While lack of a secondary typing may seem like a burden, it differentiates Muk from other bulky Poison-types like Amoongus and Hisuian Qwilfish, as it can more reliably switch into threats like Brave Bird Hisuian Decidueye and Florges, respectively. The combination of Toxic and Protect has multiple benefits, allowing Muk to stall out Toxic damage, recover health with Leftovers, and scout out choice-locked threats like Choice Specs Espeon and Choice Band Tauros-Paldea-Blaze. Knock Off offers utility outside of Toxic and is Muk's best way to handle opposing Poison-types like Salazzle and Hisuian Qwilfish. Drain Punch supplies Muk with an extra form of recovery, and hits other Toxic-immune foes like Alolan Sandslash and Immunity Snorlax. Poison Jab can also be run in this slot for a more offensive presence, but doesn't benefit Muk as much as a staller. The defense investment pairs well with Muk's typing, allowing it to better check physical attackers such as Hisuian Decidueye, Toxicroak, and Bombirdier. That being said, Muk can also invest in Special Defense to better take on special attackers like Alolan Ninetales and Rotom-Mow. Sticky Hold is the ability of choice to better check the many of these foes, not losing it's item from Bombirdier and Toxicroak's Knock Off and being immune to Rotom-Mow's Trick. Tera Dark is the best option as it gives Muk's Knock Off better damage output, now OHKOing Espeon and Delphox, as well as luring their Psychic attacks.
Muk fits well on bulky teams in need of a defensive Poison-type that can check the especially bad matchups that can't be handled by its competitors. Water-types like Milotic and Lanturn are great partners for Muk, as Muk handles threats like Brute Bonnet and Toxicroak for them. Both run recovery that pairs well with Muk's Toxic, and can provide Burns with Scald for Muk to better handle physical attacks. Goodra can be run alongside Muk on teams looking to spam Toxic, as Goodra is one of the few non-Poison-types that gets Toxic. Unless Muk wants to use its Tera, Psychic-types like Bruxish and Espeon can pose big threats. Therefore, Dark-types like Bombirdier and Grimmsnarl can stop them from spamming their Psychic attacks freely. In return, Muk handles Fairy-types like Florges and Whimsicott. Florges also makes for a great partner for Muk, supporting its questionable longevity with Wish while offering a secondary way to deal with Fighting-types. Cramorant is a notable threat to many teammates that fear its Gulp Missile Paralysis, and Muk's Toxic offers a way to deal with it without triggering the ability. Some of these benefitting teammates include Arcanine and Ambipom, who can help with Toxic stalling through Morning Sun and Fake Out, respectively.
