I'm sorry if this sucks. This is my first RMT. Actually this is my first ever thread. So please to criticize me. Just don't. I'm also new to the RU tier. I gave it a try and I've won a tourney even (with a different team that now has UU pokemon in it). This team reached a peak of 1301 on the ladder before I started to drop (yes, I know it's not much but I'm new).So I will dive right into the team.
Céline Dion (Meloetta) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Serene Grace
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SAtk / 216 HP / 40 Def
Modest Nature
- Charge Beam
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Hyper Voice
My thought process behind this was that with an Assault Vest Meloetta will be able to dish out the hits and I will be able to take any special hit thrown at me, with the exception of bug and dark of course. I also felt that being able to boost with Charge Beam 100% of the time with Serene Grave while having added bulk is just too good to pass up. If I am not mistaken, this set can hit every Pokemon for decent damage. My thought process behind the EVs was to give Meloetta maxed out Special Attack to hit harder, 252 HP EVs so I can take both physical and special hits better, and 4 physical defense EVs because it's the only helpful stat left after HP and special attack. If there is anything Meloetta hates it's two things: U-Turn, and Knock Off. Because of Pokemon like Scyther and Braviary I am forced to switch if I don't want to damage my Meloetta. It gives them momentum and if I decide to stay in they just go to another thing that can threaten my Meloetta. Knock off.... There isn't a team without it (except for mine). Seriously this move is just, ugh! Out of all the types Meloetta has to be weak to only bug and dark.
Rancor (Emboar) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Blaze
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Superpower
- Wild Charge
- Earthquake
Scarfed Emboar. Yep, you heard (read) me right. Emboar can hit everything for neutral coverage, and hard. It punches holes in teams with its Flare Blitz and Superpower. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have U-Turn. The only threat in RU that can outspeed this is Swellow, and I have another Pokemon later down the list to take care of that. However, this thing is extremely vulnerable to Braviary as it doesn't outspeed and I didn't give it Sucker Punch. Yes, this Pokemon may resist dark but as it is scarfed, it hates Knock Off just as much, if not more than, Meloetta. Allot of people like to bring in their Explouds thinking this is banded, AV, or e-belt. But no, it's scarfed. It just has that surprise factor that makes it so good. The EVs are self-explanatory. They're scarf EVs.
It can safely switch in to any bug-type moves and can live some dark type moves if it needs to, which is why I chose Emboar in the first place.
Horny (Rhyperior) @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SDef / 216 HP / 40 Def
Serious Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Rock Blast
- Earthquake
What can I say? It's a decent SR setter, and it's arguably one of the best in the tier due to its raw bulk. Not only does it set rocks to hinder the common threat that is Moltres, but it also checks Swellow and is a reliable switch in to allot of the bug types in he RU tier. Overall just a great Pokemon. However, due to the lack of special defense, its capabilities are limited. I can't run maxed out physically defensive EVs if I don't want to be OHKO'd by a specs bubble from Chinchou. This is the only physically bulky Pokemon on my team, and I feel as if that's where I have my problems. This isn't even a solution to Braviary but it's the best I can think of.
252+ Atk Braviary Superpower vs. 216 HP / 40 Def Solid Rock Rhyperior: 160-189 (37.6 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
Adamant Braviary just rains on Rhyperior's day, thinking it can safely switch in. And rain is bad for Rhyperior, considering its typing. Carbink is a decent check to Braviary, but it's set-up fodder for the Bulk Up set. This is why I run Rock Blast, for substitute Moltres, Braviary, Abomasnow, etc. My thought process on the EVs was to give it max special defense so it doesn't die to a special attacker immediately, 216 HP EVs because it already has a high HP and it's more than enough to help with the problem of Rhyperior's poor special defense, and 40 defense because Wynaut. It's still not a "physical wall" but it'll do.
Mr. Pringles (Jellicent) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SDef / 252 HP / 4 SAtk
Calm Nature
- Recover
- Will-O-Wisp
- Scald
- Shadow Ball
I chose Jellicent because it's generally a good partner with Rhyperior, and grass types aren't gonna want to mess with me when I have Emboar around. The common Amoonguss is also threatened by Meloetta. I chose this because it helps with the lack of physical bulk with my team and it counters the sub punch+seed variant of Abomasnow that I am so afraid of. The EVs are self-explanatory. Special wall EVs with no physical investment because of W-o-W. Cursed body over water absorb to get lucky on scarfers when I fodder this off. I don't like water absorb because Jellicent already resists water and people are already afraid to hit with a water move because of it.
Obamasnow (Abomasnow-Mega) @ Abomasite
Ability: Snow Warning
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Focus Punch
- Blizzard
Ah, good old Abomasnow. Probably my favorite Pokemon on this team. This set is really threatening. To get a sense of how good it is I've once 4-0'd a team just with Abomasnow. 4 of the kills were his. This just goes to show how good this set is. However there are some flaws. Jellicent exists, and so do Escavalier, Durant, and Bronzong. This is why I have Jellicent and Rhyperior on my team. Jellicent to absorb the bug moves, Rhyperior to kill some other bugs like Yanmega and Scyther, Jellicent to resist steel, and both Rhyperior and Jellicent to resist fire. Emboar can switch in to a fire move if he needs to. What makes this set great is the fact that Abomasnow is the best special-attacker in RU and the fact that you can get 100% accuracy Blizzard under hail. What's not so good about this set is that after hail runs out the only thing I can do is Focus Punch, sub, and seed reliably, while I don't have much physical attack investment. Leech seed helps to chip away at health while regaining it, and in combination with hail this can take away health fast. For the EVs I maxed out special attack because Blizzard is my primary move, put 248 in HP to create an odd number so I can survive some switches while SR is up, and 8 physical attack because where else would it go. I went with a quiet nature because I didn't want to sacrifice some of my bulk and I wanted to take less from Gyro Ball. But with no way to remove hazards on my team this weakens my Abomasnow set greatly, as it relies on sub and that'll quickly take away his health. Abomasnow does get synthesis but hail bumps it down to 25% healing. I'd rather having leech seed while I can do damage while regaining health.
Wireless (Virizion) @ Life Orb
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Leaf Blade
- Stone Edge
The shining star of this team, Virizion. It's a great SD sweeper and can hit everything for neutral with its coverage. Fletchinder can easily revenge kill it though, so before sending Virizion out make sure Fletchinder is gone. You'd be surprised at how good Fletchinder is. I have only just now realized how big of a flying weakness I have and my only switch in is Rhyperior. Anyway, the reason I chose this is because Sharpedo just owned me. Virizion is the best check for Sharpedo in RU. Not many run the weak Ice Fang that is not enough to kill Virizion, and a very small amount of them run a special set with Ice Beam, and Virizion is pretty specially bulky so it'll just eat up those Ice Beams. The EVs are self-explanatory, just sweeper EVs.
What Didn't Work
No hazards removal was a pain. Specifically toxic spikes was my downfall and that's why I started to lose my ladder rating. Regular spikes were also a problem, don't get me wrong. Because of this I have no chance against stall teams. And as stated before, my Abomasnow relies on sub, so with rocks up on my side his hell quickly diminishes even with Leech Seed.
Having no Cleric was also my down fall. The only mon on my team with reliable recovery was Jellicent, and with no hazard removal toxic spikes just ruined my entire team. I also had a problem with some of my mons getting burned. Sleep was also a problem. Amoonguss just forced me into a tight situation every time. Despite having two grass types I did not want to risk the sludge bomb poisoning me and hitting me for a decent amount of damage. I simply could not have that happen.
Meloetta didn't work. Plain and simple. I got no opportunity to set up with Charge Beam and it was too weak to common RU threats. I feel like I just didn't have the right partners for it, besides maybe Emboar. It's a shame that the mon I based my team around on was the one that did the least for me.
Not so much Pikachu, but Fletchinder. I never thought I would be saying Fletchinder was a threat. It's a problem to everyone on my team but Rhyperior, and once that's gone the Fletchinder sweep commences. Allot of them run Focus Sash so they can get at least one SD up and when the sash pops they sweep with priority Acrobatics. I could run Sucker Punch on Emboar, but if they SD and I get locked into it then it's GG.
Probably the most common scarfer in RU, Braviary just destroys my soul. It's able to hit everything for neutral damage and is open to sweep un-boosted once my Rhyperior is gone and my Jellicent is weakened. The Bulk-Up set is just as terrifying. Again, I could run Sucker Punch on Emboar but I could not risk it running the Bulk-Up set.
This is the bane of my Meloetta. With decent attack and a great ability that boosts Aerial Ace this thing is a huge threat to my team. The scarfed set is especially dangerous because it outspeeds my Emboar. The only thing I have for the non-scarf set are Virizion and Rhyperior. Virizion can easily kill if Stone Edge doesn't miss and Rhyperior can still sustain a serious injury because on occasion Scyther will run Brick
Break.
This is where you fix my team. It's all up to you. I desperately want to keep a team similar to this, as I love using all the Pokemon here. But it just doesn't work against decent players. I badly want to make my Meloetta work, but if all it takes is to swap Meloetta out for something else then feel free to suggest that change.
Let me know if I have missed anything in this RMT that I need to include. Such as the threats to my team. I really do hope you can fix this team. Thanks for your time, it means allot to me!
