Every week or so, I'll be posting some of my favorite teams. After all, what am I to do with them and the analysis I wrote for them anyway?
The first (and only time) I used this team was in an RBY Smogon Tour. Granted, I had already locked up enough points to squirm into the top 8 so I was just bored and fooling around. It was also at this time that the
whole controversy over whether trapping moves like Wrap were broken or not, so I decided to have some fun since I had nothing to lose.
So here's what I took into battle that day:
Alakazam
- Psychic
- Recover
- Seismic Toss
- Thunder Wave
Used as a defensive guy to take statuses or whatever until I could switch in some offense.
Tangela
- Bind
- Mega Drain
- Sleep Powder
- Stun Spore
And thus begins the Wrappage. Even though Tangela is outclassed by Victreebel in every way, he is most critical to team success. He can switch in on much more attacks, doesn't mind sacrificing itself to paralyze a pokemon (and help set up the Victreebel sweep later), and takes explosions and statuses pretty well.
Onix
- Bind
- Earthquake
- Explosion
- Rock Slide
Wrapper #2. Hey WTF it's Onix! Once again to fit into our Wrap theme, we resort to arguably the worst Ground type in the game to suit our needs. But like that kid at the end of the bench who has been beaten down the whole season and just is aching to play some minutes, Onix played a much bigger role in succeeding than I thought it would. Took numerous telegraphed Explosions, annoyed people endlessly with bind to exploding itself on key pokemon.
Cloyster
- Blizzard
- Clamp
- Double-Edge
- Explosion
Wrapper #3. Gotta love Clamp/Explosion and is a great mid-gamer even on a regular team, a big hit-taker at that. This guy is simply great for getting to stuff like Starmie and exploding them to hell, not to mention Clamp CH is pretty nasty in itself. Double-Edge is preferred over Hyper Beam for a 100% accuracy finishing move.
Victreebel
- Double-Edge
- Razor Leaf
- Stun Spore
- Wrap
Wrapper #4. Either him and/or Dragonite is the late-game sweeper(s). What can I say, Vic is just so sick.
Dragonite
- Blizzard
- Hyper Beam
- Thunder Wave
- Wrap
Wrapper #5. Nothing unusual here, like Victreebel he either goes for the sweep or goes down paralyzing to set one up.
Thoughts:
The name of the game is paralysis, paralysis, paralysis. You should be attempting to bully your way to paralyzing/killing the faster pokemon like Starmie/Zapdos/Tauros that can rain on your parade. Tangela/Onix/Cloyster don't mind taking status/exploding if it leads to a sweep.
(Example: If you have Tangela out and your opp gets sick of being wrapped and brings in Starmie/Zapdos, what do you do? Let Tangie take a hit and Stun Spore them to set someone else up. Simple, right?)
But in short, abuse wrap like a fiend, get the other guy screaming at his monitor that you're a cheap ass fucker, and most importantly, be aggressive and give yourself as many chances as possible to get lucky!
Conclusion
This team actually made it to the finals of the RBY 32-man tour. Ironically, it lost to a stronger wrap team with more standard and better pokemon!
