My first 5th Gen Competitive OU team

When I first started creating my team for this gen, I sorta just threw Pokemon around to see which ones worked best. After many many hours of trial-and-error, I think I finally got something that works.

-----------------

068.gif

Machamp (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: No Guard
EVs: 240 HP / 248 Atk / 16 SDef / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Payback
- Ice Punch
- Bullet Punch
- DynamicPunch

This guy hits hard as a lead. The point is to create a huge dent in my opponent's team before he goes down. And he does just that most of the time. On average, I think he scores at least two KOs every battle.

DynamicPunch and Payback work as a great combo. The two offer great coverage when paired. Usually people try to switch in ghosts to defend against DynamicPunch, but Payback takes care of that problem. I've had a lot of people switch in Gengars only to get KOed because of that. Bullet Punch is a great priority move against Pokes that run sashes. Ice Punch is there to handle annoying Gliscors.

After Champ dents the opposing team, that relieves some stress so that the rest of my team can come in easier.

Scizor (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Technician
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Bug Bite(?)
- Superpower
- Bullet Punch
- Swords Dance

This guy is a powerhouse. I decided to run a Swords Dance set because I thought it paired well with Amoonguss [see below]. Amoonguss comes in to shut down a Pokemon with Spore, then I switch Scizor in and start setting up. Don't quote me on this, but I think Bug Bite is his strongest STAB move? That's why I decided to use it anyhow, though I heard U-turn is good as well.

Scizor also has a number of resistances and great defense, so I'm usually able to switch him in when the rest of my team fears something.

591.gif

Amoonguss (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Regeneration
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Def / 72 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Clear Smog
- Hidden Power [Fire]

I find Amoonguss to be amazing and extremely underrated. He provides the bulk for my team, as Regeneration and Giga Drain makes him incredibly hard to take down. Clear Smog is there to prevent other Pokemon from setting up and Spore is there to shut Pokemon down. Its a great way to switch Pokemon in without worrying about them getting hit. I'm running fire for Hidden Power to take care of steels.

Basically, this guy is on my team as support. Clear Smog and Spore does wonders.

149.gif

Dragonite (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Multi-Scale
EVs: 56 Atk / 252 SAtk / 200 Spd
Mild Nature (+SAtk, -Def)
- Flamethrower
- ExtremeSpeed
- Earthquake
- Draco Meteor

I had a huge problem with Infernapes at one time, and that's when I decided to incorporate Dragonite into my team. Dragonite is naturally bulky with Multi-scale and respectable defensive stats, so this provides less stress when I'm switching him in. And I feel like I switch him in a lot, especially when there are three members of my team that are really vulnerable to certain attacks, especially fire (Scizor, Accelgor, and Amoonguss). And that's why Earthquake works great, since I'm able to knock out fire Pokemon (namely Infernape, and to an extent, Heatran).

I have Flamethrower to take care of steels. Draco Meteor is there as an all out offensive move when I feel like the rest of my team doesn't provide enough "oomph" to finish the job. It has saved me a lot of times.

121.gif

Starmie @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Surf
- Thunderbolt
- Recover
- Rapid Spin

Since the rest of my team is mainly offensive, I thought to run more of a defensive Starmie (hence the EV investment in HP). He's not meant to be played like the typical Life Orb Starmie. I use him mainly for rapid spin support. I have two Pokemon on my team that don't like Stealth Rock, so I think Starmie is needed to deal with that problem.

Otherwise, Surf and Thunderbolt are there for offense.

617.gif

Accelgor (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Sticky Hold
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Bug Buzz
- Giga Drain
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Ice]

And finally Accelgor is the last of my Pokemon. Unlike Scizor, who's suppose to be my physical powerhouse, Accelgor is my special powerhouse. Coming off of a 100 base special attack and STAB, Bug Buzz hurts a lot. It takes care of those pesky Latios, which the rest of my team seem to have trouble dealing with. Giga Drain is there to heal off residual damage from Life Orb and to hurt bulky waters. Focus Blast for steels like Skarmory, Scizor, and Heatran.

With the second highest base speed in the OU metagame, I use Accelgor as insurance. With the exception of Starmie, the rest of my team don't necessarily shine on speed. Accelgor is here to fix that. I typically bring him out late-game to finish off weakened Pokemon that the rest of my team are having trouble with simply because they're too slow.

-----------------

So there you go, that's my team. Comments/tips/suggestions? I'm sure I need them, since it's not perfect. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Machamp (M) @ Leftovers Trait(Ability) : No Guard

A perfect Machamp in my eyes! Just commented on one of these actually. May I ask what those few EVs in SpD are for?

Scizor (M) @ Leftovers

Yes, Bug Bite with Technician and STAB is 135 BP, compared X-Scissor and U-Turns Base 80 and 70 respectively. U-Turn works well to switch a team mate into a resisted attack to gain the upper hand by doing so. Superpower and Swords Dance is rather contradictory, so I would replace it with either Roost to man=intain your longetivity, or Brick Break to keep the same type coverage. There's always a nice 90 BP Aerial Ace to wreck things like Breloom, Whimsicott, Conkelderr, and Virizion for greater damage.

Amoonguss (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Regeneration
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Def / 72 SDef

I've seen him around, actually, and he does work well. There are a few things that perform its job a bit differently, but Amoongus works well. Leftovers may be a better option in order to prevent Trick users form giving it to other team mates, such as your Dragonite.

149.gif

Dragonite (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Multi-Scale
EVs: 56 Atk / 252 SAtk / 200 Spd
Mild Nature (+SAtk, -Def)
- Flamethrower
- ExtremeSpeed
- Earthquake
- Draco Meteor

Not much to say other than it looks well suited for your team. The lack of any recovery may be a bit of a problem in the future, so be cautious as to how you use him.

121.gif

Starmie @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Surf
- Thunderbolt
- Recover
- Rapid Spin

I really like the idea of running such a bulky Starmie. The lack of SpA investment is going to make it hard for him to do anything outside of spinning, however.
617.gif

Accelgor (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Sticky Hold
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Hardy Nature

Everything seems to work out except for the nature. Why Hardy? Modest will get you 328 SpA and 389 Spe with investment. This allows you to hit WAY harder while still being ridiculously fast. Other than that, your using him well, and he has a purely correct moveset.

Well, I hope I helped you out with your team. Good Luck!

Good eye there, I didn't even realize I've been using Hardy for Accelgor all this time. Geez, that might've cost me some matches in the past...

According to the D/P article on Machamp, the few special defense are there so that it's impossible for Azelf to OHKO Machamp.

I'll definitely try out Brick Break for Scizor. I'll see if it provides just enough power to OHKO stuff. It should work well with Swords Dance, I think.

For Dragonite, I'm REALLY considering dropping ExtremeSpeed for Roost. Now that you mentioned it, the residual damage from Life Orb is annoying. Plus, Roost allows me to activate Multi-scale multiple times. I think I can afford to lose ExtremeSpeed since I already have two Bullet Punch users and a speedy Accelgor, so I don't think one less priority move will make much of a difference.

As for Starmie, I'll consider reallocating some HP EVs into SpAtt. I find that he has been having trouble knocking out Pokemon recently.

I really appreciate the feedback though. Thank you!

I have a couple of suggestions. On Machamp, a minor nitpick, but as a lead, it generally likes to have a Lum Berry as its item, as it helps it to compete with other leads who use status moves. Nothing worse than a burned Machamp right out of the gate. Instead of running Scizor as an all out sweeper, you could run a bulky variant with Roost instead of Superpower. It still tears holes in a lot of teams, but it does not crumble as easily. Also, the overall lack of entry hazards is a bit disconcerting. Spikes does fit on Accelgor, but I don't know if you are willing to sacrifice a moveslot for a suicide Spikes on the last turn before it faints. But with Spikes, it could shift with Machamp as a lead, making the team a little more unpredictable.
