ORAS UU My first competitive team.

Hey everyone, this is my first attempt of trying to build a decent competitive team. I feel like it does OK, and is probably massively hindered by my poor skills as a trainer but at the same time there's probably a bunch of weaknesses I haven't realised because I haven't played Pokemon for a while.
Anyways, enough of me rambling, lets get into the team:

Donphan @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Ice Shard
- Rapid Spin

Not really sure on what to say here, but here goes. When I first thought of using Donphan, he was predominantly in the team to set up rocks, and possibly rapid spin away any hazards that get thrown my way. As I've battled people, I've learnt that he's much more useful than i first thought, as he's able to switch in on physical attacks and gobble them up pretty decently, and hit hard with a stab EQ. Ice shard is there for priority and to do good damage to flying/dragon types (as I lack coverage for those)

Chandelure.jpg

Chandelure @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Dark Pulse
- Fire Blast
- Trick

Chandelure is my go to special attacker but recently also became my go to choice as a lead as I can either hit hard with a stab ghost ball or fire blast, or use trick on pokemon that try setting up on turn 1. I feel like it works pretty well with Shaymin as I can absorb a fire attack with flash fire and do some damage of my own either on said pokemon or on the switch-in.

Shaymin.jpg

Shaymin
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Seed Flare
- Earth Power
- Psychic
- Synthesis

Shaymin is here as my answer to water types for Donphan and Chandelure. If I switch in on an attack I can either hit them back with a seed flare, or synthesis to recover health from that before trying to punch holes in things. Earth power is there for steel and fire types as they're quite common switches to deal with Shaymin, and psychic is there for coverage of fighting and poison types.

Goodra.jpg

Goodra @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Outrage
- Fire Punch
- Thunder Punch
- Superpower

I'm not quite sure on what to say about Goodra. This slot was originally for a white herb huntail but I couldn't utilise it too well and needed to find a replacement. After watching a couple of battles on youtube I realised that this thing is a boss and haven't looked back since.
He functions as my secondary special wall as it isn't weak to too many things, and if I predict well and come in on a grass type move sap sipper just makes this thing even more destructive. Outrage is there for STAB and good damage to everything but fairy types, fire punch and thunder punch are there for coverage and superpower is just there tbh. I never really use it so a good replacement for that would be peachy.

Umbreon.jpg

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
- Foul Play
- Heal Bell
- Wish
- Protect

Lemme start by saying; I absolutely adore this thing. He gobbles up everything a special attacker throws at him, and can wish-protect the health back if need be. Heal bell is there to get rid of pesky ailments such as burn on Goodra/Donphan or paralysis on anything, and foul play is there for chip damage if need be. Not quite sure what else to say as it's a pretty standard set I think...

weezing.jpg

Weezing @ Black Sludge
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Toxic
- Will-O-Wisp
- Sludge Bomb
- Flamethrower

Last, but definitely not least, one of my favourite mons from day one, weezing. His role is pretty self explanatory. He tanks physical hits, and trys to get a burn or toxic off depending on what comes in to deal with him. Sludge bomb is there for decent stab damage and flamethrower is another way to deal damage to mons that have low health left when he's already in.

Thanks for listening to me talk about these pokemanz, I've been having quite a bit of fun with it because I'm still learning and stuff. Not quite sure how to end these things so I'm just gonna leave awkwardly :)

Hey there DmnNwmn this team is not as good as it can be, but I can provide a few changes that can make it good so here we go! n_n

Team Changes:
  • First off, the lack of a solid Fire and Fighting check outside of Chandelure really scares me as Entei, Infernape, and Cobalion can all play around the rest of the team and proceed to power through with Sacred Fire burns, their versatility, or Swords Dance respectively. My first change to fix this is Offensive Defog Salamence > Donphan. While you lose Stealth Rock, I plan to add it in with the next change, you gain a solid Fire and Fighting check and Ground immunity while being able to provide this team with quite a bit of power.
  • The above change does, however, leaves you really Mamoswine weak so what I suggest is running Shuca Berry Cobalion > Goodra. You have a Dragon-type in Salamence already and the synergy of the team allows Cobalion to fit perfectly on the team, providing Stealth Rock support and momentum in one spot. Shuca Berry allows Cobalion to tank an EQ from the likes of Krookodile and Mamoswine and fire back with a supereffective Close Combat, neutering the threat.
  • With these changes, and the lack of a Mega, I feel like going Rain Dance Mega Swampert > Weezing is an amazing change. Weezing sadly doesn't do too much for this team as you have a Fighting check with Salamence and an immunity in Chandelure. Weezing also lacks reliable recovery, meaning it gets worn down more easily than a team would want. What Mega Swampert does is gives this team a cleaner that is bulky enough to tank priority should that be the opponent's only way of checking it. While Mega Swampert does get worn down like Weezing, it also provides a ton more power than Weezing, giving this team more to pressure the opponent with.
  • Next, I feel like Water-type setup sweepers such as Suicune, Feraligatr, and Gyarados are fairly big issues which is why I think Whimsicott > Shaymin will fit this team better. While Whimsicott lacks the natural bulk and power of Shaymin, it still provides a supereffective STAB against said Water-types as well as being able to Encore these setup sweepers, forcing them out. It also gives the team a VoltTurn core when paired with Cobalion.
  • Lastly, Energy Ball or Memento > Dark Pulse allows Chandelure to either lure bulky Water-types or allow Mega Swampert to have an easier time setting up against the opponent. Dark Pulse provides nothing as Shadow Ball and Fire Blast hit everything else hard enough that there is no need for it.
Alternate Changes:
  • A physically defensive spread on Umbreon can further deter physical attackers thanks to the new bulk + Foul Play; however, this leaves you more susceptible to the Nidos as well as Alakazam.
  • Stone Edge > Volt Switch on Cobalion can give you a way to punish the inevitable Zapdos and Gyarados switchins, but this means you are giving up momentum in Volt Switch so that is up to you.
  • Another idea is running Offensive Pixie Plate Whimsicott as it can provide you with power as well a still being a soft check to the Water-type setup sweepers. (I will provide the set for this below)

Honestly speaking for your first competitive team this isn't horrendous so that's good, anyway onto the changes:
  • Honestly I think having Salamence > Goodra is a good change as it gets rid of a Pokemon that more or less isn't doing too much there aside from tank hits, which is unnecessary considering you have a decent amount of walls, and replaces it with a Pokemon that can act as a very solid win condition, which is something your team really needs.
  • Toxic Spikes > Toxic on Weezing is yet another good option which allows you to inflict Toxic through hazards over manually setting it up and overall gives you a much better matchup against bulkier teams as opposed to making Weezing have better individual matchup against bulkier Pokemon and honestly dual status on one Pokemon isn't necessary.
  • Memento > Dark Pulse on Chandelure allows you to get rid of honestly pretty bad coverage (most of what Dark Pulse hits is covered by STAB Shadow Ball) for team support which allows you to have much easier setup opportunities with Salamence, which I made the focal point of the team.
  • Whimsicott > Shaymin is probably a necessary change here considering how weak you are to offensive Water-types, many of which can use Dragon Dance to easily outspeed Shaymin and beat it should it be weakened, making Whimsicott optimal here. While you do lose some wallbreaking prowess, this shouldn't hurt your matchup against bulkier teams too much considering you now have TSpikes on Weezing.
Salamence @ Lum Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Iron Tail

Standard set, you can use Moxie if you want to but I believe you need Intimidate to aid your matchup against stronger physical attackers you may want to attempt to setup on, but Moxie can be good for bluffing Choice Scarf and increasing your cleaning potential.

Whimsicott @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Moonblast
- Giga Drain
- Encore
- U-turn

Again, pretty standard stuff but I have Giga Drain over the likes of Energy Ball and Stun Spore since this is your main answer to bulky Water-types too so it really appreciates the longetivity Giga Drain provides. You can have Leftovers over Pixie Plate should you feel even more sustain is better than the extra power Pixie Plate provides.
