My first RMT. Patience is key.

Patience is Key

Changes are bolded

Hello everyone, just wanted to post my first RMT here, I'm relatively proud of it, as it has been a result of a week or so of brainstorming and testing. I tried to do something original by using a few pokemon that despite being in OU are less frequently seen, as well as avoiding using the ever so common weather inducing pokemon, while still using pokemon and a strategy that can take advantage of any weather the opponent may be using. It has fared pretty well in the battles I've used it in over wifi, but as always, I'm sure I have overlooked something and have noticed a few flaws which I will get into in the analysis. Just hoping to get some constructive criticism and suggestions which can make this team even better! So without further ado:

I started with the core of Gengar and Heatran, thinking that the two work well together. Not only is Gengar immune to fighting and ground, two of Heatran's main concerns, but Heatran can absorb quite a few hits that Gengar can't. Sub/disable Gengar works great with toxic Heatran in terms of immunity synergy and stalling. Not to mention Heatran is a decent lead for setting up stealth rocks which Gengar can prevent from being removed by spin blocking.

With this base, I decided I needed someone who could set up spikes and toxic spikes, as the goal of the team thus far was to cause a lot of switches and rack up entry hazard damage. Since I would probably be doing a fair amount of switching myself, I figured having a spinner would be invaluable as well. Forretress fit the role perfectly, not to mention Heatran happily absorbs and fire type attacks coming his way.

With the core of the team put together, I needed something that could do good amount of damage and set up on any switches I could force. Bulky Gyarados seemed to fit the role perfectly. Able to switch in on a variety of attacks at least one member of my team fears (fighting, fire, ground) and check a few physical threats with intimidate, Gyarados seemed like a great addition.

At this point, I had no one to absorb electric type attacks. Especially with Gyarados's 4x weakness, I needed something I could pivot in when I saw something electric coming while also being slightly bulky. Gastrodon seemed like the natural choice, as he also brings a second immunity to water with his storm drain ability. Not to mention his 4x grass weakness is gladly taken by Heatran, Forretress, and even Gengar on occasion. Capable of recovering and watching foes die from poison and switching, he seemed like a great addition.

Finally, I needed a sweeper to finish everything off and take advantage of weakened foes. Technician Breloom seemed like a natural fit with his priority mach punch and ability to set up on switches. However, spore seemed to conflict with the other statuses this team was inducing, so this pick remains my most uncertain.

Specifics of the team:

490.png

Heatran@Leftovers (Calm)
Flash Fire
248 HP/252 SpD/8 Spe
- Lava Plume
- Protect
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock

Heatran is my all star special tank, stealth rock, protect abusing staller. He can take a ton of abuse and stall with protect for leftovers recovery. He can hope for a burn on the switch to a physical threat with lava plume and poison everything else. In the sun, he does a dangerous amount of damage to pretty much anything. I absolutely love this set. This guy has won plenty of games pretty much by himself.

94.png

Gengar@Black Sludge (Timid)
Levitate
4 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Disable
- Substitute

Gengar takes advantage of any fighting or ground attacks coming my way for a free switch in and proceeds to lock down whatever he goes against. Should the opponent only have one move they can hit him with, a simple substitute followed by a disable will more than suffice to shut them down. Should they choose to switch, I get a free substitute in and entry hazard damage, so anything that can be KO'd in two hits is easily disposed of at this point. Otherwise he can substitute disable stall them if they are poisoned and force another switch. Gengar gets a ton of opportunities to switch in on this team and is more than capable of taking out many threats. Not to mention he spin blocks. Staple to the team.

205.png

Forretress@Leftovers (Relaxed)
Sturdy
252 HP/176 Def/80 SpD
- Spikes
- Volt Switch
- Rapid Spin
- Gyro Ball

Forretress is pretty bland here. He has the meat and potatoes job of setting up entry hazards and removing any the opponent sets down, setting up a distinct advantage for me as I am able to force many switches which eat away at the opponent's HP. The last move is really a toss up. It's currently earthquake to deal with electric types, as Gastrodon is the only other member who can hit them effectively, but this leaves me screwed against levitating foes which I would like to surprise with an attack. This said, I would appreciate input on this last moveslot.

130.png

Gyarados@Leftovers (Adamant)
Intimidate
176 HP/128 Atk/204 Spe
- Taunt
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge

Gyarados is able to take advantage of being able to switch in on a few attacks that this team seems to draw from opponents, notably fighting and ground. He intimidates physical attackers and taunts walls, allowing him to set up one or more dragon dances after which he is deadly. I most often use him earlier in the game should I see an opportunity to set up and sweep early, as Breloom is more valuable late game with priority to finish off weaker opponents.

428.png

Gastrodon@Leftovers (Sassy)
Storm Drain
252 HP/4 SpA/252 SpD
- Earthquake
- Ice Beam
- Toxic
- Recover

Gastrodon is an all star pivot on this team, absorbing a variety of hits and allowing me to switch to the appropriate threat. That said, I feel he may be somewhat underachieving in other aspects, as the only other uses I have really found for him on this team are recovering through damage while toxic chips away at opponents' health and ice beaming dragons. Not to say that he isn't an incredibly useful pivot because he most definitely is.

286.png

Breloom@Life Orb (Adamant)
Technician
4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
- Mach Punch
- Bullet Seed
- Swords Dance
- Spore

Breloom is my late game sweeping option. With priority mach punch, technician, and life orb, he hits very hard and excels at finishing off teams after they have been weakened by entry hazards and poison. The only issue is he has difficulty setting up a swords dance with spore because of poison going around the other team like a rampant disease. I've considered a choice band version, but have not implemented it, as I don't often like choice band users, but it may be the best choice here. There may even be a better pokemon option here I have overlooked. This spot needs some heavy reflection, criticism, and input in comparison to the others.

That's it. I don't have much more to say, but I would greatly appreciate any input you may have for me however large or small. Thanks for reading, hope you liked it!

Considering who to replace Gastrodon with currently. Thank you for the feedback so far, I am currently playtesting the options given to me and am open to more constructive criticism

Hi, this is a really good team for a first try.
But let's see how you could improve in my opinion.

So, the weaknesses :

- Terrakion Scarf. Because he will outspeed and potentially kill your Gengar, but also because he can deal big damages to everybody. Your only Fighting resisting being Gyarados who is weak to SR and to Stone Edge.
A Sub/Salac version could be a real pain. He can come on Heatran for instance and set-up a sub as you switch afraid of the CC. Then if he can get the Salac Boost and the SD, you have to rely on Breloom.
Nothing "impossible to beat" here, but everything will probably collapse once that your pokemons will be weakened.

- Tentacruel. Well, he's probably not the one that will sweep your whole team, but he can switch in relatively peacefully on many of your members if he got the Rain Support and hit pretty hard Gengar on the switch.
He can also absorb TSpikes. You should have a way to "set-up" on him better. In order that, each time that he comes in, you "trade" your TSpikes for a set-up. Then, the Tentacruel won't be allowed to switch in if you see what I mean.

- Mamoswine can be annoying. He hits hard everything, can 2HKO Gyara with SR, and Forre too in fact after some previous damages ! The rest of your team takes big damages, Gengar doesn't like an Ice Shard, same goes for Breloom, Heatran hates Earthquake and Gastrodon can be OHKO'd after some damages (he can take up to 88%!)

- Landorus-T is another issue. Sadly, he totally set-up on your Forretress, and with one single SD he kills everybody in your team. Gengar can of course help a little, by trying to Disable Stone Edge, but if it's a Double Dance version, you're done ! Because he will Rock Polish as you switch to Gengar and kill it, then probably sweep the rest of your team later when he gets a SD.

I could list some other threats, because you're also weak to stuff like Scarf Latios under Rain because he can spam Surf/his Stabs and kill everybody. Indeed your switchs in being Heatran and Forretress, who can't really stand some Surf under the Rain. The rest of your team being outsped and killed bar Gastrodon who takes a chunk from Psychock. Especially if the Latios is not Scarfed !
Celebi can be a little bitch, EarthPower killing Tran, Psychic killing Gengar and Breloom, Giga Drain killing Gastrodon. And Gyara/Gastro can't really wall Celebi and can't deal any real damage to him.

So the changes, will be be short :

- Change Earthquake for Gyroball on Forretress, with 0 IV Spe and a Relaxed Nature. And change TSpikes for Volt-Switch. This change, will fix up MANY things in fact. Now, you're not so set-up fodder for anything immune to Ground. Because, something like DD Mence or Nite crush your team pretty badly (especially Mence, with Nite you need to scout if he has EQ/FirePunch to wall it).
TSpikes are not useful, and your team is not stallish enough to get a real reward from these Spikes. You usually should just Spikes up, because TSpikes can be easily removed.
Volt-Switch can get you some tempo, and escape Magnezone.
GyroBall kills Mamoswine/Terrak and deals BIG damages to RP Landorus-T.

- You know what ? I like your Gyarados/Breloom combo. And I don't want to change Heatan and Gengar. You play Forretress and I think it can work here. However Gastrodon is to me a bit out of place because you don't really benefit too much from him.. I have issues finding which pokemon could replace him to be honest...
But, you can try Latias. I got an "odd" set for you. My worry is, you need probably another Fighting Resistance and something to take Water Hits. However many pokemons could open you to a Sun Team (you're a little weak to it after Heatran's death). Moreover, you need to kill Latios and Dragons. You can't let them destroy your team after some DD or a Scarf. So a Scarf&Trick Latias could get the job done. To use it at its maximum power, you could try Wish Jirachi over Forretress but it should work just fine even without it.
Latias kills Tentacruel also, and switches in almost everything that Celebi could throw at it (bar HP Ice, but usually a Celebi won't stay to eat a Draco Meteor if it's a Nasty Plot set, because he won't be able to Recover since he has 3 Atks).

THE SETS :

380.png

Latias @ Choice Scarf
Levitate
72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psychock
- Healing Wish
- Trick

You can try Roost over Healing Wish, but I believe that Healing Wish is a superior option in this particular case. You can revenge kill any Dragons at +1 with no fear. Moreover you get a decent switch in to many usual attacks.
Healing Wish can be really good when paired to pokemons weak to SR, indeed it does heal the pokemon you switch in BEFORE the hazards damages. Gyarados too weak to sweep in the late game (and it's the case very often), a low HP Heatran/Forretress that you need healthy, Breloom/Gyara have been burned/paralysed ? Well Healing Wish can save the day.
Usually you want to trick when you don't need the speed anymore, it's not the easiest set to play with, but it does work.

I hope I helped, and good luck !

TL;DR

Gyro Ball and Volt-Switch on Forretress
Latias over Gastrodon

Hello.

Nice weatherless team, with great use of common threats in the OU metagame, such as SD Techniloom, and Special Defensive Heatran. I also like the synergy this team has, so props for that. I see some flaws that this team has, and hopefull this rate can help iron out those flaws. With that said, let's get to the rate. First, I'm going to agree with Remedy's changes of Gyro Ball and Volt Switch in place of Toxic Spikes and Earthquake on Forretress. As explained before, Forretress doesn't become complete setup fodder for Terrakion, as Gyro Ball will always break its Substitutes. Next up, you say Gastrodon is out of place on your team, so I suggest that you replace it with a Special Defensive Celebi. Special Defensive Celebi would be an excellent addition to your team because like Gastrodon, she can for ce a lot of switches. Another advantage of Celebi is that it has near flawless synergy with Heatran as Celebi can lure in Steel types that can cause some trouble and you can kill them off with Heatran. Well, that's all I have to say for this team. I really hope that my advice helped you in one way or another. Like I said, this is a very nice team and I would like to wish it good luck in it's future endeavours. Good luck to you as well!

Hey, cool team. First off, I'd change Gyarados' set a little to a Substitute + Dragon Dance set consisting of a moveset of Substitute / Dragon Dance / Waterfall / Bounce, and an EV spread of 56 HP / 248 Atk / 204 Spe. Taunt isn't too useful as Gyarados is fairly slow unboosted, and Substitute has many key advantages, like preventing weak opponents from breaking your Substitute, which lets you gain extra Dragon Dance boosts. Substitute also works well with Intimidate, as you can set-up a Substitute on stuff like Ferrothorn and Scizor. Bounce is a superior option over Stone Edge, since you can take out Celebi and it's a strong STAB that hits hard neutrally. You seem to want to get rid of Gastrodon, since having 2 water-types isn't really needed, and your team is a bit slow, and your team is weak to Terrakion. To help with this, I would recommend a SubCM Latias in its place. It can also tank Water and Electric-type moves, and brings a crucial Fighting-type resist. Latias also helps you deal with stall, as you can set-up and sweep weakened ones. Substitute lets you avoid status and Leech Seed from Ferrothorn, and with a combination of Substitute and Recover, you can stall Ferrothorn out of Gyro Ball PP, then set-up Calm Minds, which makes Latias hard to take down. Recover keeps Latias healthy, while Dragon Pulse is a STAB that no Pokemon is immune to, so with sufficient boosts you can kill anything. Good luck!
