My first team, OU tier

alright, i was just wondering were my team stands. its my first, but i think its pretty good. I wanted to use pokemon that i liked but still build a decent team that i could use. This team was also set up for a battle with my friend, who doesnt follow normal metagame rules.

And now, the team

mamoswine.png

The Lead

Mamoswine[Orion] @ focus sash
adamant 252/252 atk/sp
stealth rock
stone edge
earthquake
ice shard

A suicide lead of sorts. He may not be fast, but I will always be able to get off a stealth rock. Hopefully an Ice shard as well.
Swinub is a favorite of mine, so I new from the start I wanted him. He was the first pokemon I EV trained properly. At first he was just on my team, When i started learning more about team building i relised that he would work well as my lead. After battling a few times, using a focus sash seemed to make the most sense. It allowed me to get a follow up attack, normally getting a ko depending on the lead.

starmie.png

The Swiper

Starmie[Gemini] @ life orb / expert belt?
timid 252/252 spa/spe
surf
icebeam
psychic
thunderbolt

special sweaper/main attacker for my team. Great coverage with the moves, and being able to out speed a large section of opponents not much can stop the sweep. I decided on psychic over recover and timid nature to be able to handle gengars, something that was a huge threat to my starmie. My friend gave me a modest starmie after a battle way before I knew anything about metagame. It helped me get through the game, so I knew I wanted one for my team. After some time in the battle tower, psychic made more sence to me over recover, and i realised the better coverage it gave me. I am thinking that an expert belt may be better over the life orb.

flygon.png

The Jack of All Trades

Flygon @ (need an item) most likely a life orb
jolly 252 Atk / 80 SpA / 176 Spe
earthquake
fireblast
utrurn
outrage

My mixed attacker, filed up the last spot on my team wich lacked a fire move and a good counter to scizor. He gives cover to both my starmie and vaporeon from electric attacks nicely, who in return can take ice moves. Flygon is another one of my favorites ever since sapphire. He fit as coverage and gave me some different attacking options. With out him, my team becomes open.

metagross.png

The Boomstick

Metagross[Crux] @ choice band
adamant 252/252 atk/spe
meteor mash
bullet punch
earthquake
explosion

My boom stick. Get in, hit something hard, or, if need explode on a threat to my team. I was looking for a physical cannon who could take a hit, and Metagross filled that spot. Nothing likes meteor mash form this guy. Plus hes pretty ballin with the big cross and being a large blue train wrecker and all. Originally, I ran him with hammer arm over bullet punch, that i almost want to go back to, but meteor mashes extra power and STAB makes up for the difference in type advantage over a blissy.

vaporeon.png

The Water Godess

Vaporeon[Aquarious] @ leftovers
bold
188 HP / 252 Def / 68 Spe
wish
surf
icebeam
protect

The team healer, who can dish out a hit if needed. Walls weaviles that arnt running thunderpunch completely, along with anything else that cant lay down a real hard electric/grass move. If my swine is still rollin, wish can fix him up for focus sash to be active again, and bam, I get a nice physical attacker back up an running. I love vaporeon. I used her way back in yellow as a tank. Wish really helps my team going, and protect can let her take an explosion. Her bulk helps absorb hits well too, giving me a good switch if one of my sweapers or weak, and then can go and patch em up again. I have often fallen back on my vaporeon.

porygonZ.png

The Surprise Finisher
Porygon Z [Andromeda] @ choice scarf
modest 252/252 spa/spe
download ability
dark pulse
thunder bolt
tri attack
icebeam

A revenge killer of sorts. I used to have a hippodown but he didnt fit at all. Hes kind of a back up for my starmie. Gives a good switch for ghost moves that i know are coming and can hit back with dark pulse. I thought he was cool so i though id try one out. The choice scarf fixed the speed problem. the replacement of my hippodown really patched up my team in my opinion. but being locked in nerfs his ability to mop up late game when I need him the most.

Im thinking about droping metagross for breloom, but i dont know who to drop him for.. Also Ive been running a ludicolo in place of flygon to see how it works, and i once used Yanmega before Porygon Z

The oldies and back up
ludicolo.png

That Dancing Mexican Frog

Ludicolo @ damp rock
swift swim
modest
252/252 SpA/Spe
rain dance
grass knot
icebeam
surf.

He gives me some good coverage, grass knot for swampert, which is why Im running him. rain dance can up my starmies surf, but otherwise the rain doesnt really do much for my team. He also lacks the raw power i feel he needs. When I run with ludicolo though, my team feels very open to electric and electivire overall. I also loose the coverage that Flygon gives me.

yanmega.png

Speed Boostin Bug

Yanmega@ Expert Belt
Modest
speed boost
252/252 atk/spe
dark pulse
air slash
bug buzz
protect

I might come back to my Yanmega, Porygon really hasnt been doing it for my team, but his typing brings in a weakness to rock that otherwise posses no threat. Speed boost first, to make sure hell hit first, then let loose.
I loved yanma way back in gold, but he kinda sucked. alot. Yanmega let me realise the awesomeness of my dragon fly poke that Ive alwaysed loved.

breloom.png

The Mushroom Dino
Breloom @ Poison Orb
44 HP / 252 Atk / 212 Spe
Adamant
seed bomb
leach seed
mach punch
sky uppercut

Breloom was a poke Ive overlooked for a long time, but after a sugestion from my friend, i decided to give him a whirl. After being a subjected to a spore focus punch, i think I may switch my move set, but were it stands Breloom would give me acsess to grass and fighting moves over steel, which isnt really need on my team. Hes iffy for me though, being as slow as he is.

So theres my team, I feel like a did well over all, being my first. I dont feel that if I jumped into one of the tornys going on it would be the next best thing, but it could do well compared to some teams. Im not really sure if my throw backs would be better, and thats many what Im asking about. Thanks for reading.

Well Breloom is a very good poke, especially with spore, and I used a baton passer to give him more speed (my Scizor). I don't know what I would get rid of though...

Yanmega is very good also, and I've been hit hard by them in the past, but I must say I like your team the way it is. You could always switch out the Porygon-Z for either of those (Breloom or Yanmega), as he is kinda a filler and can do anything, but it would shift the team's weaknesses to flying especially for Breloom and rock for Yanmega, like you said. I use adaptability on my Porygon though, b/c of the overall coverage of Tri-Attack. It hits really hard on anything that doesnt resist it with that boost.

I use Ludicolo on a rain dance designed team sometimes, and he does well as a special defense with rain dish and leftovers. I use a different poke to use rain dance though so he doesnt have to carry a damp rock. I don't know how effective he would be otherwise...overall I think you have a good team going on.

Hope that helps!

Thanks. Ludicolo didnt work out to well to for me. I didnt really think out what I had going for my team when I tried him. I was thinking more about countering swampert. I appreciate your opinion. I think for now this team is done. It was a good expirence setting it up. I went for Download on the porygon do to the team this was created for. ill get a SpA boost on almost all of the switch ins. Which will boost Tri attack higher than adaptability. Its a riskier choice but download should pay off. I think ill save my yanmega for a different team.
Thanks

Hi, welcome to Smogon! :)

I'm in agreement with sillyboy, you should give Flygon a Choice Scarf. Here is the set:

Flygon @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 80 Hp / 252 Atk / 176 Spe
Adamant nature (+Attack, -Special Attack)
~ Earthquake
~ Outrage
~ Stone Edge / Draco Meteor / Fire Blast
~ U-Turn

Flygon's resistances and immunities give it plenty of opportunities to switch in and score some surprise kills. Earthquake and Outrage are your primary STAB options, resisted only by Levitate Bronzong, Skarmory, and Shedinja. Stone Edge allows you to revenge kill that Gyarados, and can pick off a weakened Zapdos. Draco Meteor allows Flygon to beat a weakened Physical wall and gets the jump on Salamence and Kingdra without locking yourself in. Fire Blast fries Skarmory for a 2HKO and is your best option against Bronzong. U-turn is to scout for common counters, and works well with entry hazards in play as you can force a lot of switches this way.

If you go with Draco Meteor, switch your nature to Naughty and distribute those 80 HP EVs into Special Attack. This will give you the power to revenge kill Kingdra and Salamence, as well as a guaranteed 2HKO on Skarmory. A Jolly nature can also be used to revenge kill a neutral Speed nature Dragon Danced Salamence, but the power drop makes it a poor option.

Hope this helped, good luck! :)

I could give him the scarf, but then there would be 3 choice users on my team, and I dont like the idea of having 3 pokes that would be locked into a move is scary. Ill try it though.

Hey Dogzilla, in regards to what's already been said, I think a Choice Scarf Flygon would be a great step up on your team. And I'm with you, in the sense that I don't like having three Choice users, so what I propose is that you get rid of Porygonz. I use to use him early on when I first started battling but I eventually realized that they are better revenge killers.

What I suggest is this:

Electivire @ Expert Belt
Ability: Motor Drive
EVs: 80 Atk / 252 SpA / 220 Spe
Mild nature (+Special Attack, -Defense)
~ Thunderbolt
~ Flamethrower
~ Hidden Power Grass
~ Cross Chop

The standard Electivire. I personally don't care very much for him but on your team I think it would do quite well. With Starmie and Vaporeon (two Water Types) there are bound to be electric attacks flying your way, or if you suspect Thuder Wave, switch this guy in. After a Motor Drive boost, you can start thrashing through your opponents team.

The moves are very basic. Thunderbolt is for STAB and to hit Water or Flying types. Flamethrower makes Steel types regret facing Electivire, especially Scizor (who would be U-turning all over this team). HP Grass is for mainly for Swampert and is also 4x effective against Rhyperior. I suggest using HP Grass over HP Ice because you already seem to have Dragon types covered with Mamoswine, Starmie, and Vaporeon (who all wield Ice type attacks). And finally, Cross Chop is for Blissey and Tyranitar. It's also for Snorlax but his popularity seems to have largely since DP and DPP.

When I started this rate, I was going to suggest getting rid of Metagross for a Choice Banded Tyranitar. But looking over your team for as long as I have now, I see that you really need a Steel type thanks to the defensive advantages it grants. Plus, you have two water types to take any Fire attacks aimed at Metagross.

All in all, great team! Hope this rate helped!

ive been using a choice scarf on shoddy and its worked well. I have a few Ideas that im going to try tommorow.

Drop metagross and porygon z for porygon 2 and aerodactyle and drop mamo as my lead and use him as an attacker.

Ive been runnin
aero
gengar
pory2
fly
vapor
gaydos

Its worked pretty good so i think a mesh between these two should work out. Ill see tomorrow. its 4 am now and i really need to sleep

I dont know though, HPs are out of the question since this is a DS team. The swamperts i fought couldnt do much though so im not worryd if i stick with this and go for Elec, ill probably run twaze if i dont get pory2. help him out if he doesnt have a motor boost.

quick game went well, prob save the others for a different team
thanks everybody

Hey Dogzilla, I think that you have a pretty good team. You know where your weak spots were and you filled them up with good pokemon.

About your switch from Metagross to Breloom: I think that it's a good switch, but you have to customize your Breloom first. Your Breloom has 2 Fighting-type moves. Mach Punch is an oblivous keeper, because it has priority and because Sky Uppercut has a lower accurary. I would replace Sky Uppercut with Spore. To compensate the replacement of Sky Uppercut, I would replace Leech Seed with Facade. Your Breloom has already got a source of restoring hp. Leech Seed is therefore replaceable. Facade in combination with the Poison Orb makes an deadly attack(Base Power 140), which will compensate Sky Uppercut.

Overall I think you have a decent/good team.

Add Endeavor over Stone Edge on Mamoswine. While it will need a little prediction the combination of Ice Shard and Endeavor is near flawless.
