My First Team

Hi, im fair new to the Pokemon scene but i managed to make a team. This team was made because they are favourites and not because they are overly powerful for the metagame. Although they are favourites i have tryed to make them as good as i can to keep up with the meta, so here i go.

My Team.

1. My Lead.

Umbreon - Sassy @ Leftovers
Sychronize

HP 252 / SPD 252 / DEF 4

1. Payback
2. Toxic
3. Double Team
4. Moon Light

I chose this in my team because its my favourite Pokemon. After building this team i experimented abit deciding which of my team should be my lead. After a while i decided Umbreon is the best. I use it as Wall to set up Toxic on any opponent i can. I use Toxic first then try my best to set up as many Double Teams as posible. Umbreon can usually take 2 to 3 hits before Double Team starts to make my opponent miss but by that time i usually use Moonlight to get back up to full HP. Most of the time Umbreon on its own takes care of my opponents first 2 to 4 Pokemon. The one that Knocks out my Umbreon has Usually been hit by my Toxic. Payback is there so that after they are poisoned and after i have Double Teamed as many times as i can, Payback can deal some extra damage. I was thinking of breeding in a Curse but i wanted Double Team, Toxic and Moonlight on here so to put on Curse with no Attack moves would of been pointless. So i just put Payback on, on its own to fill in a gap.

Now the rest of my is no piticular order.

Jolteon - Modest @ Life Orb
Volt Absorb

4 HP / 252 SPA / SPE 252

1. Thunder Bolt
2. Thunder
3. Rain Dance
4. Shadow Ball

My Jolteon has 348 Specail Attack. The Maximum is 350 so it has amazing EV's and IV's in Specail Attack. Thunder Bolt is a must for such a high SPA Electric Pokemon. Shadow Ball is there for Psychic Types and Ghost. Rain Dance is to set up for Thunder. The reason i have both Thunder Bolt and Thunder is because i dont like the accuracy of Thunder so i use Thunder Bolt most of the time. But when i need to set up for a big hit or to set up my Floatzel with Rain Dance i'll use Thunder to hit hard. Also with Jolteon's high Speed i will always hit hard and fast.

dpmfa392.png

Infernape - Adamant @ Choice Band
Blaze

4 HP / 252 ATK / 252 SPE

1. Flare Blitz
2. Close Combat
3. Earthquake
4. U-Turn

I dont like Infernape as a MixApe, i think it has such a good Physical Move Set to waste Ev's in Special Attack. So ive maxed out on EV's in Attack so i can give the best Physical Moves it can learn. Equiped with Choice Band, Infernape hits hard everytime. Flare Blitz and Close Combat are a must for Infernape. Both 120 base power Physical STAB moves.

dpmfa419.png

Floatzel - Adamant @ Life Orb
Swift Swim

4 HP / 252 ATK / 252 SPE

1. Ice Punch
2. Waterfall
3. Brick Break
4. Aqua Jet ( I think this needs replacing)

This is the reason i gave my Jolteon Rain Dance. Swift Swim doubles its speed in rain. Ive always liked fast pokemon that can hit hard and after building my team i didnt have a Water Pokemon so i chose the fastest Water Pokemon in the game (Tied with Starmie). Ice Punch to take down Dragons and Waterfall for a good Physical STAB move. Brick Break and Aqua Jet are move fillers so im struggling to think of good moves for them slots.

dpmfa123.png

Scyther - Adamant @ Muscle Band
Technician

4 HP / 252 ATK / 252 SPE

1. Aerial Ace
2. Swords Dance
3. X - Scissor
4. Quick Attack

I love this guy. Technician, STAB, Swords Dance and Muscle Band make Aerial Ace a really really powerful move. Just one Swords Dance and this guy sweeps anything that isnt resistant to Flying. X - Scissors there for a good STAB move and Quick Attack is here for a fast Technician move.
I chose Scyther over Scizor because of Scythers speed. Ive always preferred the faster Pokemon. Plus ive never really been a fan of Steel types but Scizor is on my list of Pokemon to train.

dpmfa065.png

Alakazam - Modest @ Petaya Berrie
Synchronize

4 DEF / 252 SPA / 252 SPE

1. Substitute
2. Calm Mind
3. Psychic
4. Shadow Ball

After thinking of what team i wanted i knew i needed a Psychic type and what better Psychic type than Alakazam. I know MewTwo and Mew is better but im staying alway from Ubers. Its incredible High Speed and High Specail Attack made me fall ion love with this guy.
Substitute is there for the Petaya Berrie to activate. Calm Mind is there to set up if the Sub doesnt get killed in one. Psychic is the Best STAB move for this guy and Shadow Ball is there to kill threats.

There is my team. Just note that i didnt make this to counter anything in the meta. I just chose my favouites and made them as best as i could.

Okay, so first problem. Double Team is banned in competitive play due to Evasion Clause. Moonlight is also a terrible move in OU, because Sandstorm is permanently in effect for one battle in two. If you're looking for some healing, Umbreon's best option is Wist+Protect, as it suits his stalling abilities. I've never really been a fan of Payback on Umbreon, personally, as his offensive stats are just so weak, so you might want to consider Taunt, Mean Look or something there.

Regardless, Umbreon is a terrible lead. Most leads these days will just use him to set up their Spikes/Toxic Spikes/Stealth Rock, and then either switch to something like Lucario who threatens you out and gets a free Swords Dance, and then rips your team to shreds from there; or they'll just sacrifice their leads as the majority of leads these days are either disposable (or immune to Toxic).

The lead role isn't where you just the pokemon that just happens to be coming out first; leads are typically very particular role players. Umbreon is no good as a lead, he's a support player who comes in as a special sponge.

Now the rest of my is no piticular order.

Volt Absorb

2. Thunder

But when i need to set up for a big hit or to set up my Floatzel with Rain Dance i'll use Thunder to hit hard. Also with Jolteon's high Speed i will always hit hard and fast.

Rain Dance is terrible unless you're building your entire team around it. Thunder gives you no additional coverage on Thunderbolt, and is too hard to set up. I'd replace this set with a Choice Specs Jolteon, running TBolt, Signal Beam/Shadow Ball, Hidden Power [Ice/Grass/Fighting], Other.

dpmfa392.png

I would run Thunderpunch on here somewhere, probably over Earthquake. There aren't many bulky electric types that will be able to take a Choice Banded STAB, and Close Combat/Overheat both cover the other Steels. Thunderpunch takes on the Bulky Water switch-ins.

U-Turn is fine, but I really prefer that with Scarf. Note also how bad Rain Dance is when you run this guy on your team as a primary physical sweeper.

dpmfa419.png

Floatzel - Adamant @ Life Orb
Swift Swim

4 HP / 252 ATK / 252 SPE

1. Ice Punch
2. Waterfall
3. Brick Break
4. Aqua Jet ( I think this needs replacing)

This guy is not strong enough to justify Rain Dance; one pokemon does not a Rain Dance team make.

He's more or less okay, but he's basically trying to fill the same role that Infernape is doing with far better offensive states. I'd cut this guy entirely and think about running something bulkier. Gyarados, Suicune, Kingdra, or Swampert are all potential contenders.

dpmfa123.png

Steel-types are a must-have in todays metagame, otherwise you will get blown out by one of the two ubiquitous superdragons, Salamence and Latias. Scyther is simply a much worse version of Scizor, and you have no reason to be running Scyther over the evolved form. Replace.

dpmfa065.png

Alakazam - Modest @ Petaya Berrie
Synchronize

4 DEF / 252 SPA / 252 SPE

1. Substitute
2. Calm Mind
3. Psychic
4. Shadow Ball

After thinking of what team i wanted i knew i needed a Psychic type and what better Psychic type than Alakazam. I know MewTwo and Mew is better but im staying alway from Ubers. Its incredible High Speed and High Specail Attack made me fall ion love with this guy.

There is my team. Just note that i didnt make this to counter anything in the meta. I just chose my favouites and made them as best as i could.

Alakazam is pretty much unplayable these days, IMO. For a start, Gengar can now do his most useful trick, Trick. And you're not even using that. Gengar has a better move pool and better resistances. He's not bulky enough on Defence to be suitable as a Calm Minder; Scizor, who resists both of your attacks can come in and either set up, or Pursuit/Bullet Punch you for a guaranteed kill.

Petaya Berry will be pretty much worthless by the time you get it off anyway, because you'll have Calm Minds already.

This guy should just be cut, he is an inferior version of things like Azelf and Gengar if he's going Choiced, and this set is inferior to the same sort of thing on Latias or Jirachi, whom he should be replaced with. Jirachi is probably better, as it shores up your huge Dragon problem.

In short, though, you need to build your team with the team in mind, not just choose 6 pokemon individually. When Umbreon goes down (and he often will because he's your lead) you will have nothing bulky or defensive left and you will get completely cleared out by anything fast and hard-hitting. You have nothing that breaks Stall, so Stall will sit back and wait for you to lose to all their entry hazards. Offensive teams will tear you to shreds, especially since you're not even using entry hazards to hinder their switches.

Everyone else is agreeing with the fact that Umbreon is a poor choice for a lead. He really is too slow to do anything useful as a lead because every other lead outspeeds him and can use Taunt to prevent him from using support moves such as Substitute and baton pass. You also lack a Pokemon who uses stealth rock. For this, I would replace Umbreon with a lead Azelf

Azelf-Naive @Focus Sash
Levitate

4 Atk/ 252 SpA/ 252 Spe

Stealth Rock
Psychic
Explosion
Taunt

With a Focus Sash, you will be guaranteed to set up stealth rock and if you find yourself at 1Hp left, you can just explode. Also you can screw up slower leads with Taunt as it will prevent them from setting up stealth rock.

There's no reason to use Scyther over Scizor. For that I would replace Scyther for a Swords Dance variant of Scizor

Scizor-Adamant@Life Orb
Technician

32 HP/ 252 Atk/ 224 Spe

Swords Dance
Bullet Punch
Brick Break/Superpower
X-scissor

With this Scizor, you can effectively revenge kill Tyranitar and Salamence with Bullet Punch who otherwise would give this team some trouble

Hope I helped

I'm going to go ahead and say I agree with everything MrIndigo said, except U-turn. CB U-turn will nail most Latias for at least 50% iirc.

I love Scyther, and I think he would be at least usable if Stealth Rock didn't exist, but it does, and that keeps him in UU.

You should strongly consider lurking around the site more, while battling on Shoddy. There are many people here who are willing to teach you about the game, and just playing in an online environment will teach you a lot as well. Try and develop a team with the idea of a whole team in mind; you will more than likely have much more success, and I'm also sure that I and many others here will give you a good full rate.

i agree with mrIndigo its pointless using rain dance unless you have a rain dance team your realy just giving your opponent a chance to send in a kingdra to mass murder your team or for pokemon with thunder to now have a powerful 100% accurate move. and also only having one pokemon that bennefits from rain dance lets opposing rain dance teams get a faster jump on your team
