After spending over 100 hours battling and building teams I finally have a team I am happy with. My rank peaked at 51 using a team very similar to this one. Lately though since it is summer vacation I have been facing much tougher competition so my rank has been moving around alot between 200 and 800. I still believe this team is better though because even though my rank is worse I am winning more of my battles. When I do lose its usually because of me not playing well and not a weakness in the team. I have won so many battles with people under 500 rank with a score 6-0 and 5-0 that I have lost track. Many more of my wins come from people who lose 3 pokemon without me losing any and then just forfeit. Ok here is my team:
Genesect @ Normal Gem
Trait: Download
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Mild Nature (+SAtk, -Def)
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Explosion
- Substitute
First off I would like to say that I have no idea why people use choice scarf on genesect so much in the usage stats. Your opponent just predicts what move you are going to use and then just switches to pokemon that counters that forcing you to switch. Also genesect is already so fast he doesn't really get much of a benefit from it. Substitute on the other hand works much better because your opponent might use protect or switch since they expect your genesect to attack right away. Ice beam and thunderbolt provide great coverage especially after being powered up by download. Explosion with normal gem takes care of blissey and chansey which are real threats to this team since it has so many special attackers. Many times its a ohko and if it isn't just weaken them a little bit first.
Ferrothorn (M) @ Metal Coat
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Spikes
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Stealth Rock
This guy works great since he can ohko so many things with gyro ball. My slowbros trick room allows him to actually sweep well toward the end of the match. If he is up against another ferrothorn or if I think my opponent will just switch in a ferrothorn counter I will just use stealth rock or spikes instead of attacking. I considered giving him bulldoze but that move is just too weak. I tried leech seed a while ago but that move just didn't seem to help much.
Heatran (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Dragon Pulse
Heatran needs the choice scarf because otherwise its too slow and I can't always depend on trick room. Its a great switch in counter for alot of things and a pretty standard moveset. I was thinking about changing hp ice to hp grass to deal with rotom-w and other water types but I don't know if its worth it.
Gliscor (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 236 Atk / 20 Def
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Facade
- Protect
Gliscor works great at countering fighting type pokemon and other physical attackers. His evs are somewhat unusual but I like them since they are a nice balance between attack and defense. I would also like to say I have no idea why people use fling and acrobatics on gliscor since fling wastes a valuable moveslot. Acrobatics also isn't that much more powerful than facade and doesn't require set up like acrobatics does. Ice fang on gliscor is also bad since it has to be 4x super effective to do more damage than facade does and it doesn't even have perfect accuracy.
Slowbro (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Flamethrower
- Trick Room
- Slack Off
I am really surprised slowbro isn't used more but I guess its because he is somewhat outclassed by jellicent. Slowbro is still better though in some ways. First of all his stats are better overall and he has regenerator. Jellicent has better resistances, fewer weaknesses, and slightly better moveset options. Jellicent still deserves his place on the usage stats but slowbro should still be up higher. Anyway this moveset provides a good balance of defense and special defense. Flamethrower provides a good counter for steel types especially since he can outspeed them after trick room. Speaking of trick room I don't know why more people don't use it because it is a pretty good move. Many counters to thunder wave don't work against trick room and trick room stops your opponent from sending out his fast pokemon which covers alot of them. Only lasting for 5 turns isn't really a big deal since I have plenty of opportunities to send slowbro out. Slowbro also is great against rain dance teams since he resists water moves and has trick room to counter swift swim. Even choice specs kingdra who is supposedly good enough to get banned can't 2 hit ko him with hydro pump or draco meteor.
Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Trait: Trace
EVs: 200 HP / 188 Def / 120 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Ice Beam
- Discharge
- Toxic
- Recover
Here is another pokemon that should be used more but isn't since eviolite makes him almost invincible. He is probably the best counter to dragon pokemon as well as countering many other things. Toxic and recover allow easy stalling if the opponent has a hp recovering move. I put more evs in defense than special defense because he is up against physical attackers so much more often.
Usage stats:
In order for you to understand my team better I am going to explain to you how I counter some of the top pokemon on the usage stats.
Ferrothorn:
Since heatran and slowbro both have fire moves he isn't much of a problem. Gliscor can also take care of him pretty well too once he gets in 2 swords dances. My ferrothorn can also use the opportunity of him being sent out to set up stealth rock and spikes.
Tyranitar:
Tyranitar is a little unpredictable so sometimes I have trouble with it. Gliscor counters it if it doesn't know ice punch. Ferrothorn counters it if it doesn't know flamethrower and counters it much better if trick room is up. Porygon2 counters it if it doesn't know superpower but sometimes even when it does know superpower he can stall it. Superpower doesn't ohko, superpower lowers attack, and porygon2 knows toxic and recover.
Scizor:
Gliscor and heatran counter him well. You have to be careful with heatran though because he could use a fighting move as you switch in.
Garchomp:
Porygon2 counters him well. Sometimes those substitute users can get lucky in a sandstorm though.
Excadrill:
Gliscor can counter him well even when he has a balloon since its easy to pop. Flinching from rock slide is the biggest problem for him.
Gliscor:
Porygon2 works as gliscors best counter and so do a few other pokemon on my team. I love it when porygon2 gets to take advantage of poison heal when it traces it.
Reuniclus:
This pokemon is a bit of a problem if it knows calm mind and recover. Gliscor can handle it somewhat decently or I could just send in genesect and use explosion.
Dragonite:
Porygon2 works as a great counter. I am lucky that it can't get superpower with its dream world ability.
Gengar:
Slowbro is a semi decent counter. I just have to make sure I don't get hit with shadow ball as a switch in. Sometimes people send him out when they forget trick room is in effect so I can just ohko him with psychic. Heatran works as a counter when he isn't using focus blast on the switch and so does ferrothorn (with trick room).
Heatran:
He is a bit of a problem as well. Porygon2 works well since he traces flash fire but since porygon2 has poor special defense earth power does alot. I could also use trick room and switch to gliscor. Slowbro sometimes scares them away until they figure out he doesn't have a water move. Even then heatran can't do much to him.
conkeldurr:
I usually use gliscor to counter him but maybe slowbro would work better. I have lost to him a few times when he uses bulk up alot before I can kill it or if he knows stone edge.
Jellicent:
Porygon2, ferrothron, and slowbro working together counter this pokemon well. First porygon2 poisons it possibly getting poisoned or burned in the process and then just stalls it. I could also just send out slowbro, use trick room, and then send out ferrothorn. I consider this more risky though because if ferrothorn gets burned it loses to jellicent.
Hydreigon:
Ferrothorn works as a good counter especially if trick room is in effect. Genesect, porygon2, and heatran also work but its a bit more risky.
Latios:
Pretty much the same strategy as hydreigon.
Blissey:
Either explosion genesect or gliscor counter her.
Politoed:
Since this is usually sent out first genesect counters him well. Sometimes he will use protect and then I get a free sub.
Gyarados:
Porygon2 counters easily especially with trick room or paralysis from discharge.
Volcarona:
This guy is a bit of a problem especially if it knows things like hp ground, morning sun, or substitute. What I usually do is just poison it with porygon2 and then heatran hopefully takes care of it. If that doesn't work I just stall out the poison some other way.
Skarmory:
Most of my team has a move that is super effective against it so it isn't much of a problem. If ferrothorn gets sent out because of whirlwind I can set up stealth rock and spikes.
Starmie:
Porygon2 has no problem against this. Neither does ferrothorn.
Metagross:
Gliscor can handle this pokemon unless it has ice punch. I guess slowbro might work as well.
Hippowdon:
Genesect usually both sets up sub on it and kills it. If that doesn't happen poryon2 handles it fine.
Infernape:
Slowbro handles this pokemon amazingly well. Even thunderpunch or u-turn don't cause much of a problem since it gets ohko'd by psychic so easily or I could just kill it with gliscor after trick room.
Swampert:
Porygon2 or ferrothorn handle this easily.
Blaziken:
I have been seeing speed boost blazikens alot recently so I guess it was unbanned somewhere or something. Slowbro and trick room defeat this quite easily though.
Forretress:
Once again I have 2 pokemon with fire moves on them.
Rotom-W:
This pokemon is the reason I started using facade more in battle. What happens is I send out gliscor and my opponent expects earthquake so he switches to this. If I predict right I take out about a third of this pokemons hp and if I am wrong and he doesn't switch I only do about 10 percent less damage that earthquake would have done.
Chandelure:
This probably would be more of a threat if shadow tag wasn't banned. Heatran counters this pokemon well I guess.
Vaporeon:
Since this pokemon can sometimes heal its status in the rain that can be a bit of a problem for porygon2 who usually counters it. Again just use trick room and send out ferrothorn.
Thundurus:
This pokemon can be a bit of a problem but many times he sends it out as a lead and just lets genesect kill it. If it doesn't know a focus blast porygon2 counters it. I guess heatran counters it as well.
Jirachi:
Once it is poisoned with toxic orb gliscor counters this amazingly well even if iron head makes it flinch a bunch of times in a row. Iron head only does around 1/4 damage to gliscor which can be healed after the flinching turn and using protect the following turn. If it isn't poisoned I don't switch it in because I am afraid body slam with paralyze it. In those cases I would just use slowbro.
Kingdra:
Like I said earlier slowbro counters this pokemon great even in the rain.
Cloyster:
I think porygon2 counters this the best.
Haxorus:
Ferrothorn or porygon2 I guess.
Salamence:
Porygon2 destroys this.
Machamp:
I used to use gliscor against this but too many of them know ice punch now so I just use slowbro.
Breloom:
Gliscor makes spore not work but still sometimes loses to it if it gets lucky with bullet seed. After swords dance it ohkos everything on my team with either bullet seed or mach punch except for porygon2. Porygon2 can ohko it.
Tentacruel:
Many of my pokemon counter this and overall my team isn't badly effected by toxic spikes.
Lucario:
Gliscor counters this. If it knows ice punch then slowbro I guess.
Ninetales:
Heatran and maybe porygon2. Maybe slowbro as well but I am worried about solar beam.
Scrafty:
I guess I am kind of screwed if he has ice punch but doesn't use it until after 2 bulk ups. Maybe genesect or heatran could beat it. I don't know.
Jolteon:
Porygon2 traces volt absorb and then jolteon can't do much.
Zapdos:
Porygon2 traces lightning rod and then zapdos can't do much. Its still a pain to take down sometimes since it sometimes knows things such as substitute, roost, and toxic.
Whimsicott:
I remember I used to have problems with this before I put ferrothorn on my team. Now I just laugh at it and its useless leech seed.
Mienshao:
First I send in gliscor and use protect to check for hp ice. If it has it switch to slowbro then switch back to gliscor to take the u-turn damage. Once trick room is up it is easily ohko'd by slowbro as well.
Zoroark:
This things ability makes it tricky. Porygon2 beats it I guess.
Darmanitan:
Slowbro I guess.
Electivire:
I think gliscor counters this. Ice punch might be a problem I think. If it is just get trick room up first.
Terrakion:
Gliscor beats this easily.
Bronzong:
Gliscor using swords dance and facade can do good damage to it since it is usually there just to set up light screen and reflect.
Espeon:
Trick room switch to ferrothorn and use gyro ball for ohko. That way its not a threat even if it knows hp fire.
Magnezone:
This thing makes me sometimes wish I had shed shell on ferrothorn. Heatran beats it I guess.
Togekiss:
This things kind of annoying with all the critical hits it gets. Heatran might counter it if it doesn't know a fighting move. Gliscor or porygon2 might work.
Toxicroak:
Gliscor counters this. I think once I saw one with ice punch but thats extremely rare.
Venusaur:
Heatran counters this even if it puts it to sleep.
Milotic:
Poryon2 and maybe trick room ferrothorn.
Weavile:
Heatran or maybe ferrothorn counters this.
Porygon2:
This thing can cause alot of trouble when he poisons my porygon2 but I don't poison his. Even worse is if when I do poison his porygon2 he could just come in and trace my gliscors poison heal. If that happens I have basically lost. Maybe genesects explosion could save me but thats about it. Fortunately most porygon2 users don't know how to use it well so this situation is very rare and only happened to me once or twice. I have actually used this strategy against other people more than they have used it against me. Overall toxic stalling usually beats it most of the time.
