My Successful OU Team

Ok so i decided to join the smogon threads and post my OU team that I have been doing very well with. This team has been well thought out though it may still have some weaknesses that I have not considered.

Note: srry for the not finished, accidentally pressed enter when i wasnt finished

Machamp - The Lead
68.png

Item - Lum Berry (Had life orb but twave and spore etc. totally bugged me)
Ability - No Guard
Nature - Adamant
EV's - Attk + HP
Moveset
- Dynamic Punch
- Sucker Punch
- Bullet Punch
- Stone Edge

Machamp the anti-lead. Everyone knows that the start of any game sets the tempo for the rest of the game. This pokemon has great attack and can learn a lot of great moves that can one-shot almost any of the most common leads in OU play. Its speed how ever is lackluster. The idea is to attack the opponent with your most effective attack to get it down to low health or even focus sash while they attempt to use a support move like stealth rock or even taunt or something and then finish them off with a priority move (Bullet Punch or Sucker Punch). Even if the opponent decides to attack first, Machamp can pretty well take any super effective non-STAB attack and some STAB super effective attacks that don’t have too much power behind them (stats). Now for the fighting moves. Dynamic Punch is Machamp’s most powerful attack and do a big number on almost any pokemon. It’s there to take out T-Tar, Weavile etc. Stone Edge is for the flying types like Yanmega, Aerodactyl and Infernape etc.
If all works out and Machamp lives with lots of HP and kills the lead, he will definitely come in handy as an attacker and finisher later in the game.

Celebi - Physical Wall
251.png

Item - Leftovers
Ability - Natural Cure (love this)
Nature - Bold
EV's - Def + HP
Moveset
- Twave
- Leaf Storm
- Recover
- Earth Power

Celebi is my physical defender. With weaknesses almost opposite to Jirachi, Celebi is a great compliment to the wish pokemon. rather than walling special pokemon with moves like Ice Beam, Tri Attack, Air Slash, Poison Attacks that are all super effective against Celebi, Celebi Walls the physical side of pokemon with resistances to Ground, Fighting, Water, Electric and one times every other common physical attack type. The only downside is having the common weakness of fire to Jirachi...I think Game Freak planned it that way to flaw my defensive strategy :D. Celebi can handle any physical attack with ease and can even handle an Infernape decently if it doesn’t have any boosting items. Hopefully people that do run Infernape lead with him so I can take him out with Machamp :P. Celebi is a great switch in and counter to Gyarados, Heracross, Metagross, Gallade and many more.
The moveset is similar to that of Jirachi’s in that it has a recovery move and Twave (if only it could learn will-o-wisp). Leaf Strom is it’s crazy power STAB move with 140 power which I am considering changing to a Grass Knot for the100% accuracy that can still do 120 power to the heavy things and decent amounts to the regulars. Earth Power is there to deal with fire attackers, Metagross, Lucario and many more.

Jirachi - The Special Wall
385.png

Item - Leftovers
Ability - Serene Grace
Nature - Jolly (that extra edge on some base 100 without EV's is nice)
EV's - Sp. Def + HP
Moveset
- Wish
- Ice Punch
- Zen Headbutt
- Twave

Jirachi is my special defender. With weaknesses only to Fire and Ground and full EV’s in special defense and health, Jirachi can easily stall, cripple or kill any special attacker when used properly. Jirachi can even take 2 hits and live from pretty well every max special attack pokemon using special fire or ground attack with exception to maybe Heatran. Jirachi is a hands down domination counter to Togekiss having resistances to its two STAB moves, special psychic pokemon who usually carry ice or grass moves with them which Jirachi resists and Porygon-Z in that Jirachi has resistance to its STAB Tri Attak and very popular ice beam.
Jirachi has Zen Headbutt for the powerful STAM move, Ice Punch to take care of a huge number of pokemon (namely Dragons, Togekiss and Yanmega), Wish to recover some HP when the attacker is doing less than half HP which is most of the time and Twave for crippling pokemon that are faster than it and the usual Para-Hax. Jirachi’s offenses allow it to kill a variety of pokemon easily while she is stalling them will heal and eventual paralyze.

Lucario - The Swords Dancer
453.png

Item - Life Orb
Ability - Steadfast
Nature - Jolly
EV's - Attk + Speed
Moveset
- Close Combat
- Extreme Speed
- Ice Punch
- Swords Dance

Lucario is another Physical Attacker. Lucario is a little more fragile than Salamence because he cannot up his speed and his speed is not that impressive (90). His Jolly nature and EV’s compensate and allow him to out speed EV’d 100’s and non full EV’d 105’s-115’s and maybe higher but I don’t like to risk it. Lucario also has a s***ton of resistances and only a couple of weaknesses so if you have gotten rid of some threats, Lucario can be my late game sweep with a swords dance or two up.
Close Combat is is most reliable and powerful STAB move, you can never have to much Ice Punch, and Extremespeed with 80 power surprises people with the half health priority kill.

Salamence - The Dragon Dancer
373.png

Item - Life Orb
Ability - Intimidate
Nature - Naive (if they get a special move off I have made a mistake :P)
EV's - Attk + Speed
Moveset
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Claw (I hate being locked in outrage)
- Brick Break
- Earthquake

Definitely my most powerful attacker with a huge base attack of 135. Salamence works best for me when I bring him out free (on a death or an opponents non-attacking move) to a pokemon that cannot kill it easily and set up a DD on the switch. This allows Salamence to be faster than any non-scarfed opponent and he will have a BIG attack stat. My moveset may seem a little non-standard but it compliments my team very well. I use Dragon Claw because I hate being stuck on Outrage. Brick Break is just another “just in case” move if say a blissey or togekiss has left me with only this pokemon (i run three fighting moves on this team for exactly this) though I am considering changing it for Flamethrower for skarmory and other things just in case I can take them out and keep DD’s I’ve put up and I also do not have a fire move on this team. Finally Earthquake is needed cuz it’s a powerful move and I only have one other ground move that is special. Ice moves kill this guy and if they bring out a mamoswine to Ice Shard, I usually just pull out Starmie or Jirachi in that order of preference if I have them.

Starmie - The Rapid Spinner
121.png

Item - Life Orb
Ability - Natural Cure
Nature - Timid
EV's - Sp. Attk + Speed
Moveset
- Recover
- Rapid Spin
- Surf
- Thunderbolt

Starmie is my all out special attacker. With a huge Special Attack stat of 299 thanks to the full IV’s on that stat and a very good speed stat with a speed nature, starmie can do a number to a lot of pokemon and can revenge kill efficiently. With decent defenses and resistances recover is a must. Surf is going to be the main STAB move and Thunderbolt is going to take care of types that resist water since there aren’t any single types that resist both (i least i dont think). Rapid spin is there to counter my lack of entry hazards if the opponent decides to put up a bunch and cycle with say a skarmory. Has saved my back lots of times.

Thats my team. Plz give me suggestions or point out counters as well as suggest alternate items for life orbs plz. Thanks! Enjoy!

Well, the team is made up of standards, so obviously to an extent it'll be effective just because of the Pokemon you're using, but there are some issues here.

I don't understand the purpose of running max Speed on your Machamp. I can't imagine anything that you need to outspeed as a lead. Jirachi, Azelf, etc. are all pretty much going to outspeed you no matter what. Tyranitar won't stay in on Machamp as it gets OHKO'd and can't do anything significant back. I would run max HP.

You also said you use Stone Edge on Infernape, but DynamicPunch is better because of the confusion. Infernape is frail anyway, and Stone Edge can miss (plus, it's still only a neutral hit).

Lum Berry is a fine choice, but why for T-wave? Machamp doesn't really care about paralysis if he's not running Speed (which he shouldn't be), and the number of Sleep leads has fallen, so you could go for Leftovers for additional bulk if you wish.

---

I don't like your walling combo so much. Celebi and Jirachi don't have the greatest synergy with each other, and they get broken by Infernape (who almost always carries Life Orb, except in the lead slot, but it's more common outside of the lead slot), though Starmie helps to rectify this weakness. I do see what both of them do for your team, though--Celebi pairs well with Lucario, bringing in Scarftar Pursuits so that Lucario can set up, and Jirachi pairs well with Salamence, thanks to Wish and typing synergy. But you may want to swap to more offensive sets, since the nature of the team seems to be offensive.

Surf is going to be the main STAB move and Thunderbolt is going to take care of types that resist water since there aren’t any single types that resist both (i least i dont think).

Lanturn resists both, but you won't see too many Lanturn in OU. You could run Grass Knot for that if you're also considered about Swampert, but LO Surf already hits it very hard, so the set is fine.

lol. totally srry wrote the EV's wrong for machamp. he does have full HP ev's :P. I will probably change his item...thanks.

And you are right, Infernape really does tear apart my team if he doesn't stay in at the beginning or he is not a lead he can pose a big threat since he is super effective against both of my defensive pokemon. Might just change the pokemon but keep them as the same roles.

I also just realized that Celebi does not wall Heracross due to its 4x Weakness to Megahorn :(. Just gotta prey that its choiced if I switch into im using a fighting move.
