VGC My VGC Team

Hello, everyone! Well, this is my first team on here, but I've played with it a bit and it's certainly better than how it began. Anyway, here it is:

kyogre-primal.jpg

Kyogre-Primal @ Blue Orb
Ability: Primordial Sea
Level: 50
EVs: 196 HP / 4 Def / 56 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Thunder
- Protect

I have Kyogre on my team to serve as a counter to Primal Groudon and Rayquaza. The max speed is mainly for outspeeding Groudon, with the HP EVs used to make it more bulky. The Origin Pulse is to hit multiple targets, ice beam for type coverages, and the thunder for other Kyogres.

talonflame.png

Talonflame @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Taunt
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Tailwind

Talonflame is intended to be used as a revenge killer, as well as a counter to Smeargle with taunt. The speed is to outspeed Smeargle. I gave it the life orb to power up its attacks a bit. Tailwind is to give my team some extra speed, or to prevent from being outsped if the opposing team uses tailwind. I initially tried using Quick Guard with Talonflame, but I rarely had the chance to use it and decided it would be more worthwhile to have taunt.

Ditto @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Imposter
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
- Transform

I use this Ditto almost as a wild card, especially against Groudon, where it can use its ground type moves against it. It doesn't work as well against defensive oriented Pokemon due to the choice scarf, but works wonderfully if it copies a sweeper such as Xerneas. Speaking of Xerneas...

320

Xerneas @ Power Herb
Ability: Fairy Aura
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Geomancy
- Dazzling Gleam
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt

Xerneas is used as a bulky special sweeper, with 252 in both HP and SpA. The Dazzling Gleam is used instead of Moonblast to attack multiple Pokemon. I usually use Xerneas with Kangaskhan to have a combination of a special attack sweeper and an attack sweeper.

kangaskhan-mega.jpg

Kangaskhan @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Early Bird
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Return
- Crunch
- Sucker Punch

Kangaskhan is used as a physical sweeper, usually alongside Cresselia or Xerneas. Cresselia because it can slow down the opponent with Thunder Wave, and Xerneas so that Kangaskhan can give it a chance to use Geomancy with Fake Out. Personally, I think that sucker punch is a better option than Power-Up Punch, mostly due to Sucker Punch's priority.

250px-488Cresselia.png

Cresselia @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 SpD
Calm Nature
- Moonlight
- Ice Beam
- Psyshock
- Thunder Wave

I don't use Cresselia as often as I probably should, but when I do, it's usually alongside Kangaskhan. I mostly use it to slow down the opponent's Pokemon with paralysis, which works well if the opposing Pokemon is faster than Kangaskhan.

Other Notes:
This team doesn't do very well against Trick Room teams, but I'm not sure how to alleviate that. Would it be worth it to use up a slot in the team to have a Pokemon dedicated to countering trick room, or is there something else I could do for that? Thanks for reading over this!

Thundurus > Cresselia

With Cress used only as a speed control option I definitely recommend Thundurus, as he does Cresselia's job on this team better, and deals with Set up Xerneas + Smeargle. Also has the bonus of chunking Kyogre, and helping out against TR teams.

thundurus.gif

Thundurus @ Yache Berry
Ability Prankster
Level 50
EV's: 4 HP/252 Sp. Atk/252 Speed/
Timid Nature
-Thunder Wave
-Taunt
Thunderbolt
-Protect

This is a very basic spread but it accomplishes what it needs to. Thunder Wave and Taunt can help shut down Xerneas, and Thunderbolt hits Kyogre hard. Protect could be replaced with swagger, depending on whether you want Protect or not.

Smeargle > Ditto

Ditto is a cool Pokémon, but Smeargle does what he does better. With many different sets he's hard to predict, and his utility really can't be understated.

smeargle.gif

Smeargle @ Focus Sash
Ability: Moody/Own Tempo
Level 50
EV's: 252 HP/4 Def/252 Speed/
Timid Nature
-Fake Out/Tailwind
-Wide Guard
-Dark Void
-Transform

Those are the only Pokémon changes I would recommend. I'm sure Draconid will be here later to give you a proper rate. Good luck with your team!

Hi Bren, the team is pretty cool, there are just a couple of things that could be changed.

You want a better Kyogre answer, as relying on Ditto isn't the best thing in the world. I would suggest Thundurus over Cresselia (like iPRODiGY VGC suggested). Thundurus checks Trick Room with Taunt and provides Speed Control as stated. Alternatively, Ferrothorn over Cresselia gives you a more reliable answer to Primal Kyogre and Xerneas, both of which are benefits on your team.

Thundurus @ Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA /252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Taunt
- Thunderbolt
- Protect

OR

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Atk / 52 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Gyro Ball and Power Whip are power STAB moves that help pick off Xerneas and Primal Kyogre respectively. Leech Seed helps sap HP from the opponent and Protect is a nice move to scout. You can always try Expert Belt if you want to OHKO bulkier Kyogre:

204 Atk Expert Belt Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Primal Kyogre: 209-247 (100.9 - 119.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

The rest of the things I have to say are nitpicks with movesets. The first of which is Xerneas. A better set is this:

Xerneas @ Power Herb
Ability: Fairy Aura
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Moonblast
- Dazzling Gleam
- Geomancy
- Protect

More Speed lets you set up easier, as a base 99 Speed outspeeds plenty of the metagame before and after set up. This set gives you plenty of power with the option of a spread move and an absurdly powerful single-targeting move. No other coverage is usually needed on Xerneas, so Protect is there to help ease set-up and to scout for attacks.

Next up is Kangaskhan, which prefers a moveset more like this:

Kangaskhan @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Return
- Low Kick
- Sucker Punch

Inner Focus is better prior to Mega Evolution so that opposing Kangaskhan can't flinch you with Fake Out, as well as other faster Fake Out users like Weavile and Raichu. Low Kick is preferred over Crunch to hit foes like Dialga and Ferrothorn (the latter of which you struggle beating). Crunch is very redundant as you have a Dark-type move already in Sucker Punch.

(If you want, you can try Transform Smeargle over Ditto, as that provides Dark Void support alongside it.)

Smeargle @ Focus Sash
Ability: Moody
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dark Void
- Transform
- Fake Out
- Spiky Shield

That's all I see wrong with the team. Good luck and I hope I have helped. :D

Hey Bren :)
This is a great team, and i would like to suggest some ideas that you perhaps haven't yet considered, or that the other guys haven't touched on yet:

Small Changes

Kyogre

kyogre-primal.png

Kyogre-Primal @ Blue Orb
Ability: Primordial Sea
Level: 50
EVs: 204 HP / 60 Def / 84 SpA / 4 SpD / 156 Spe
Timid Nature
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Thunder
- Protect

This is a slightly different kyogre spread that i think you may enjoy running. I think it was from a generation showdown post a while back, but is still a great spread that hits some key benchmarks:
  • 252 Atk Life Orb Mega Rayquaza Dragon Ascent vs. 204 HP / 60 Def Primal Kyogre: 173-204 (86 - 101.4%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
  • 252 Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 204 HP / 60 Def Primal Kyogre: 168-200 (83.5 - 99.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 252 Atk Raichu Volt Tackle vs. 204 HP / 60 Def Primal Kyogre: 164-194 (81.5 - 96.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • +2 252+ SpA Fairy Aura Xerneas Moonblast vs. 204 HP / 4 SpD Primal Kyogre: 159-187 (79.1 - 93%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • Outspeeds 252 Spe neutral nature base 90 mons, e.g groudon
  • Outspeeds non-scarf Smeargle
Xerneas

xerneas.png

Xerneas @ Power Herb
Ability: Fairy Aura
Level: 50
EVs: 44 HP / 4 Def / 188 SpA / 20 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Geomancy
- Dazzling Gleam
- Moonblast
- Protect

A little more bulky spread than previously mentioned that helps xerneas beat several mons like mega rayquaza a little more easily:
  • 252 Atk Life Orb Mega Rayquaza Dragon Ascent vs. 44 HP / 4 Def Xerneas: 175-208 (84.5 - 100.4%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
  • 252+ SpA Primal Groudon Eruption (150 BP) vs. 44 HP / 20 SpD Xerneas in Harsh Sunshine: 175-207 (84.5 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
  • 252+ SpA Primal Groudon Eruption (150 BP) vs. +2 44 HP / 20 SpD Xerneas in Harsh Sunshine: 87-103 (42 - 49.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Kangaskhan

Kangaskhan-Mega (F) @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 172 Atk / 76 Def / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Double-Edge
- Sucker Punch
- Low Kick

This spread is a little more specific than the standard 4/252/252 variant, as it can survive a low kick from opposing kangaskhan:
  • 252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 4 HP / 76 Def Mega Kangaskhan: 153-183 (84.5 - 101.1%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
Bigger Changes

Ditto -> Smeargle
Sash Variant

Smeargle @ Focus Sash
Ability: Moody
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Follow Me
- Fake Out
- Dark Void
- Spiky Shield

Totally agree with the smeargle switch. However transform is pretty cool and all, but quite a few players on smogon will agree with me when i say that xerneas needs redirection support to be threatening, and smeargle is perhaps one of the best follow me users in the format. The EVs are a little more specific again, surviving a double-edge from kangaskhan if you get a +2 Defense increase from moody:
  • 252+ Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. +2 4 HP / 252 Def Smeargle: 114-135 (87 - 103%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO
Scarf Variant

Smeargle @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Own Tempo
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Follow Me
- Wide Guard
- Dark Void
- Transform

Scarf smeargle would be an interesting option if you want to run transform, as it will allow you to guarantee that you outspeed its target on the next turn. Moody can be an annoyance on this set however, as it can lower speed, so own tempo is better here. (I would recommend running quick guard on talonflame if you make this switch to protect smeargle from priority attacks)

Now, looking at successful xerneas/kyogre teams, they tend to follow a similar pattern, or 'framework,' as shown below (I've put key pokemon you could use in bold, the rest are for future reference - if you want to view the whole list of frameworks we've put together, you can find them here):

1. Kyogre
2. Xerneas
3. Ferrothorn check - Ferrothorn is one of the biggest threats to either xerneas and primal kyogre. To handle it, it is useful in this slot to use a pokemon with a fire type attack, such as Talonflame (probably your best bet) or Infernape. This slot should be able to OHKO Ferrothorn or even KO it after a Water Spout / Origin Pulse from kyogre. Fire Blast Mega Salamence and even Fire Fang Mega Mawile can work in this slot
4. Physical Groudon check - In all sample teams so far, mega salamence is used as a physical groudon check, as it provides extremely valuable intimidate support as well as being able to take primal groudon's STABs. It provides a form of spammable offense in hyper voice which can be used next to xerneas in a sweep, as well as a mega rayquaza counter. Mega salamence is also used in all sample teams as a ferrothorn counter, freeing up the last two slots.
5. Primal Kyogre check - This slot should either be able to OHKO primal kyogre or do decent damage to it without taking much damage back. Examples include: Raichu (able to OHKO primal kyogre with zap plate (or otherwise) boosted volt tackle, Ferrothorn (OHKOs/2HKOs primal kyogre with power whip (depending on the spread) and amoonguss (able to 3HKO primal kyogre with grass knot: 0 SpA Amoonguss Grass Knot (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 60 SpD Primal Kyogre: 78-92 (37.6 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO)
6. Mega / Secondary Mega / Support - This slot (or two slots if you chose fire blast mega salamence) should ensure there are no gaps in the team surrounding what you want from supporting mons. Speed control, taunt, fake out, xerneas counters and redirection are all popular choices. Example mons: Smeargle, crobat, mega kangaskhan, mega mawile, scizor, togekiss and gengar.

With this in mind, i would suggest that you try out the following:

Mega Kangaskhan -> Mega Salamence

salamence-mega.png

Salamence-Mega @ Salamencite
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe*
Naive / Timid* Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Double-Edge / Fire Blast*
- Draco Meteor
- Protect

*These belong on the same set
These are pretty standard mega salamence spreads.
As mentioned in the framework, fire blast salamence allows this archtype to handle ferrothorn much more easily, given that it can easily check kyogre without this support. Having a salamence with fire blast will mean that you won't be forced to bring talonflame against a ferrothorn, and the same goes both ways for salamence in case there is an unfavourable matchup etc. The first spread is just as viable however, so it's up to you.

Cresselia -> Ferrothorn / Amoonguss

This really depends on your choice of smeargle set. If you choose to run a sash smeargle, then ferrothorn is the best choice for this slot, as it also counters rayquaza (under rain - for overheat rayquaza). Amoonguss will provide you with redirection support if you opt to go for the scarf variant.

Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn @ Expert Belt
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Atk / 52 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Don't mean to be repetitive, but i totally agree with GradeAGarchomp's Ferrothorn set since it is pretty damn fantastic, but i just want to point out one thing:
This Ferrothorn will also OHKO more bulky, slower xerneas even when they are not set up:
  • 204 Atk Expert Belt Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (143 BP) vs. 172 HP / 28 Def Xerneas: 230-274 (103.1 - 122.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Amoonguss

amoonguss.png

Amoonguss @ Mental Herb
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 50
EVs: 188 HP / 164 Def / 156 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Rage Powder
- Spore
- Grass Knot
- Clear Smog / Protect

This is a pretty cookie-cutter amoonguss spread, borrowed from last year since it still works pretty well. The bulk will allow amoonguss to survive a double-edge from max attack mega kangaskhan, and with mental herb it can take a taunt from common taunt users. Clear smog is an interesting move, allowing amoonguss to check xerneas pretty easily, but you can still use protect over this if you like the free extra defensive option it gives you.
  • 252+ Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 188 HP / 164 Def Amoonguss: 177-211 (83 - 99%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
And that's the rate :)
Hope I've helped, and good luck with your team!

You're right about follow me. For some reason I was thinking of using Transform as a pseudo Skill Swap but considering that having opposing weather up doesn't open up any 4x weaknesses like it does for Groudon and it's not that great of a choice.
