Every generation is different and the metagame is constantly evolving. However, there has always been and always will be threats - Whether they are defensive threats or offensive threats, every competent player should have a way to handle any threat - whether they are top-tier or are a niche pick.

How does it work?

Every week, I will submit a victim for you so that you can submit checks or counters to the pokemon. Then, after submissions are placed in, voters will vote which ones are the most effective in their eyes.

Here are some very important rules to look at before participating in this thread:
1.When nominating a mon, please keep this in mind:

Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

There are some parts of those definitions that may be confusing to the unfamiliar, so now I'm going to make sure we're all on the same page. "Hax" does not mean cheats or codes used to win. "Hax" means, loosely, things that have a chance of happening but usually don't, for example, critical hits (under most circumstances), Ice Beam freezing, and Fire Blast missing. This means that we don't take into account these types of things when we analyze if one Pokémon checks or counters another. Despite this, it's unwise to declare that one Pokémon checks another when the victorious Pokémon relies on hitting Focus Blast three times in a row, or something like that. Basically, you're often okay ignoring hax unless something that doesn't have a high chance of happening must happen in order for a Pokémon to check or counter another.

There are some things, like flinching, which you would normally consider to be hax but aren't always so. For example, Jirachi has a 60% chance to flinch a slower opponent with Iron Head, so in this case, flinching is not hax because it happens over half the time. For things such as missing or secondary effects, such as a Scald burn or Special Defense drop from Seed Flare, that have a decently high chance of happening, you need to think about them when you analyse checks or counters. Even though they might fit the standard definition of hax, they happen often enough for you to expect to see them in real situations somewhat commonly. There's no official or best guideline, but in my opinion, if some form of "hax" has a 30% chance or higher of happening, you should keep it in the back of your mind because it's not a negligible occurrence.

2.Only post Pokemon sets that are reasonably viable in OU. Try to stick to the mons on the Viability Rankings

3. Reservations are allowed, however if you don't complete your post within 24 hours someone else is free to take your Pokemon.

4.You are allowed to correct people, but please do so in a civilised way, we're here to have fun, not start heated arguments.

5.You should post calcs to back up your nomination, they are not mandatory, but help out a lot.

6.Give a few explanations, not a whole academic research paper on why you nominated that certain mon, but just a few lines explaining should do.

7. If someone posts a pokemon with a certain set, you can only submit the same pokemon if it has a directly different set. You should be able to explain what makes your set unique.

To have a better idea of what's a check and what's a counter, feel free to check out this videof from BKC! and you can also read this article

And now its time to start, the first victim of this project is
:sv/ogerpon-wellspring:

Ogerpon-Wellspring @ Wellspring Mask
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Tera Type: Water
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Ivy Cudgel
- Horn Leech
-Encore

We all know what Ogerpon-Wellspring does. With a powerful stab combination, access to a boosting move and getting a free +1 in spdef upon clicking tera, as well as being able to use Encore to get in the way of fatter teams and disrupt certain sweepers, there is no wonder this mon is one of the most defining NDOU threats of this generation, even being subject to a suspect test.Let's see how you can counter this!

Nominate your check/counter for :ogerpon-wellspring: , you time to do so until Friday!

:sv/ogerpon:
Ogerpon @ Choice Band
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Tera Type: Grass
Adamant / Jolly Nature
- Ivy Cudgel / Power Whip
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Superpower

You easily eat all of Wogerpon's attacks and threaten a possibly OHKO with Adamant Ogerpon's Ivy Cudgel while Power Whip always OHKOs no matter what your nature is. You can Tera to outspeed if you're at low health, and U-turn to also possibly OHKO with Adamant while turning Wogerpon or its teammates switching in into momentum. Knock Off is great utility and Superpower can take care of Ferrothorn if needed. I'd say this is a check as it can be worn down over time with hazards and contact punishment. But, it's not too far from countering Wogeron, as it doesn't lose to being chipped down by it specifically and can Tera in case it gets too low. Also you use superior Ogerpon ftw.

Jolly P Whip Oger vs Woger:
252 Atk Choice Band Ogerpon Power Whip vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ogerpon-Wellspring: 322-379 (106.9 - 125.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Check: :Serperior:
Serperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
Hidden Power: Fire
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 56 HP / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Glare
- Substitute

A mon that’s gaining in popularity due to its ability to check woger. You switch in only a few times sure, but that’s definitely enough for the offensive teams serp fits on. You glare woger and then it’s crippled the entire game. Woger can’t even sd because you are faster and you glare it immediately. Of course serp isn’t the sturdiest of mons, but through glare and its ability to snowball off of Waterpon makes it a solid check.

+2 252 Atk Wellspring Mask Ogerpon-Wellspring Ivy Cudgel vs. 56 HP / 0 Def Serperior: 193-228 (63.2 - 74.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery - if you Tera you open yourself up to leaf storm. Not even counting serp can parahax you. Giving an sd boost is also very generous and not something that always happens.

Counter: :tangrowth:
Tangrowth @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
- Power Whip
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Sleep Powder
- Knock Off

Tang has been a pretty solid mon because waterpon is in this tier. With regen and stupid physdef, on top of a pwhip that 2hkos pon, Pon can barely do anything to you unless you get into a weird scenario where pon encores you into something else but as a human player and not an NPC you should be able to play around that effectively, and it’s not like that scenario happens anyways most of time.

+2 252 Atk Wellspring Mask Tera Water Ogerpon-Wellspring-Tera Ivy Cudgel vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 153-180 (37.8 - 44.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO - doesn’t even matter much either since you open urself up to stun spore / sleep powder / ohko from pwhip

0 Atk Tangrowth Power Whip vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ogerpon-Wellspring: 150-177 (49.8 - 58.8%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO

Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite
Ability: Thick Fat
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Earth Power
- Synthesis

Mega Venusaur usage has increased pretty significantly since the rise of Waterpon, and while it isn't the most consistent check to it due to it's weakness to hazards it can still come in very comfortably and force it out or 1v1 it essentially 100% of the time. I think physdef is the best spread for obvious reasons. I haven't chinese ev'd it here but you can definitely run some special attack investment on it with room to still check pon relatively comfortably as provided that you switch it in immediately as they SD you can kill them with sludge bomb or giga drain spam.

+2 252 Atk Wellspring Mask Ogerpon-Wellspring Ivy Cudgel vs. 252 HP / 236+ Def Venusaur-Mega: 117-138 (32.1 - 37.9%) -- 93.8% chance to 3HKO

0 SpA Venusaur-Mega Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Ogerpon-Wellspring: 236-282 (78.4 - 93.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 SpA Venusaur-Mega Giga Drain vs. +1 0 HP / 4 SpD Tera Water Ogerpon-Wellspring-Tera: 134-158 (44.5 - 52.4%) -- 17.2% chance to 2HKO (18.4 - 21.7% recovered)

With 2 votes, Ineros' :tangrowth: wins the first week!

Now unto week 2
:sm/serperior:

Serperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 56 HP / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Steel
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power Fire
- Glare
- Substitute
Serperior has been an ou worthy mon for years, since it got its hidden ability, letting it spam leaf storm and getting +2 everytime it does so.With the combination of glare to cripple mons and substitute to farm leftovers recovery, Serperior can definetly be a very annoying threat with a serious offensive presence!

:ss/heatran:
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Grass
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Earth Power
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic / Taunt

A mon that eats hits from the myriad of special attackers in the tier. Lava Plume is preferred over Magma Storm as to not get memed by 15% miss chance + Substitute blanking hits + Glare full paralysis + 8 PP move. Lava Plume also helps with incoming physical attackers as it supposedly has the same chance to burn as Scald does. Earth Power helps with opposing Heatran while Stealth Rock + Toxic / Taunt provide general utility. This is a counter, as you blank HP Fire, eat up +6 Leaf Storm, and easily 2HKO with Lava Plume.

+6 200 SpA Serperior Leaf Storm vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Heatran: 96-113 (24.9 - 29.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Heatran Lava Plume vs. 56 HP / 0 SpD Serperior: 228-270 (74.7 - 88.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Counter: :clodsire:
Clodsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Careful Nature
- Spikes
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab
- Recover

Basically counters serp tera or no. Unaware makes serp unable to parahax and snowball through you which makes this a pretty hard counter to serp itself. The only thing serp can do now is glare you which isn’t really that important because clod still pretty much walls what it needs to wall. you break sub continuously so serp can’t even drain more pp out of clod.

200 SpA Serperior Leaf Storm vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clodsire: 102-120 (21.9 - 25.8%) -- 2.1% chance to 4HKO

The winner of week 2 is PowerOfMemes with Heatran, congrats!!
Let's move unto week 3!
The victim of this week is............

:sm/tornadus-therian:
Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Flying
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Hurricane
- Focus Blast
- Taunt
With a great stat spread, superb ability in Regenerator and a movepool including both offensive and utility, Torn-T has been a staple since its introduction in gen 5.In today's national dex ou metgame, Tornadus still proves to be a legitimate pick, with the NP sets being one of the scariest, as it can kill start decimating the enemy team very fast if not handled correctly.

Let's see your choices/ideas of countering this Torn-T set! You have time until Friday to leave submission below!

Check: :raging bolt:
Raging Bolt @ Dragonium Z
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Thunderclap
- Thunderbolt
- Calm Mind
- Draco Meteor

One of the reasons nplot torn is so much less consistent of a wincon. You resist whatever flying stab, and focus blast doesn’t even ohko back while you can just tclap and put the torn in very unhealthy range or even just ohkoed, usually hindered further by rocks.

252+ SpA Raging Bolt Thunderclap vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Tornadus-Therian: 288-338 (96 - 112.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO - I think this says it all. You can’t rlly setup with this guy on the field.

252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Raging Bolt: 129-152 (32.9 - 38.8%) -- 99.7% chance to 3HKO - you are never realistically getting a boost with bolt on the field since it ohkos with tclap.

:ss/tapu koko:
Tapu Koko @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Electric Surge
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Dazzling Gleam
- U-turn
- Roost

You can easily take Tornadus-T's attacks on switch-in and easily outspeed and OHKO it back with Thunderbolt no matter what since Tornadus-T can't Terastallize because of Fly Z.

+2 252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Koko: 202-238 (71.8 - 84.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Koko: 147-173 (52.3 - 61.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Tornadus-Therian in Electric Terrain: 338-398 (112.6 - 132.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Due to the relatively low activity and interest this project has received combined with the fact that i have a very busy schedule for this summer, i will be putting it in an indefinite hiatus.Thank you to the folks that took part in this and don't worry, this might come back in september if all goes right! You can check out my other project here: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/national-dex-fill-in-the-blanks.3742011/
