New to Battling

hello, i live in Seattle, and just found out that Nintendo holds tourneys.

with no bannings that i know of, could anybody help me out with advice towards a first team for 493 pokedex? (you may assume "basic bannings", because i have no clue what they may be)

i know nothing of dv's, iv's, ev's, so breeding and Hidden Power is out, thank you for any advice/help anyone can give

Has many guides on the basics of Pokemon, including IVs, EVs, and basic competitive battling. Usually there would be such guides on this site, but the main site is currently down.
