New to competitive battling, this is my team

Okay, so despite playing pokemon for about 10 years, I've never really got into the competitive battling side of things, I tired when platinum came out, but I was easily outclassed so I gave up. Anyway, after reading a few guides around the web, I put a team together, and this is it. RMT and give me advice on how to improve it

Shady (Gengar) (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Mild Nature (+SAtk, -Def)
- Icy Wind
- Shadow Ball
- Counter
- Focus Blast
Role: This is my lead, he's designed to be able to take out the opposing lead before they have a chance to set up, ruining the stealth rocks/poison spikes. Not much else to say about this guy

Sleepy (Snorlax) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Rest
- Giga Impact
- Whirlwind
- Sleep Talk
Role: He's my wall/staller. He will Giga Impact any frail sweepers that come on the field, Whirlwind is there to mess up any plans that my opponent may of had and just generally stop him from getting set up decently, and give me a safe switch in while he's switching back or setting up.

Sparky (Jolteon) (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Charge Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Shadow Ball
Role: Special sweeper, flying type hidden power is great to counter ground types, his speed meaning he can normally ohko a grass/ground type before they get a chance to do anything.

Swimmy (Gyarados) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
Role: DDGyarados is my physical sweeper, earthquake to oppose his electrical weaknesses. normally swaps in after a Snorlax whirlwind, giving him a safe turn to set up the DD and get ready to sweep.

Swifty (Alakazam) (M) @ TwistedSpoon
Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
Role: Another special sweeper, often swaps in when someone brings a fighting type out to try and sweep Snorlax (who you've probably guessed the team revolves around) Hides behind a sub, then comes in with a sweeping attack.

Sexy (Charizard) (F) @ Charcoal
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Swords Dance
- Fire Punch
- Flare Blitz
- ThunderPunch
Role: Another physical sweeper, using thunder punch when I expect my opposition to swap in to a water type, kind of works the same was as DDGyara, where he swaps in and sets up safely after a snorlax whirlwind.

Known weakness': an opponent started with a sableye the other day, and swept most of my team under the carpet before charizard finished him off. I'm also not happy with Gengar as a lead, or Alakazam as a sweeper, I'd like to swap him out for more stallers, perhaps a baton passer to set up for Char/Gyara.

Like roles and stuff? Oh snap, I forgot. I'll edit the post now. I was kinda of in a rush to get it posted cause my laptop was about to die and I couldn't find the charger, I have it now though :P

A few obvious things to change :
- Alakazam has a wonderfull ability, Magic Guard, don't use Synchronise. And you will be able to give him life orb without recoil damages.
- Charizard is really too weak, lose half of his life with Stealth rocks (and you don't have any spinner). You might change it for a wall, able to spin/spread hazards to help your team (Foretress or Donphan could help).
- Hidden power ice for Jolteon, a much better coverage.
- This Gengar might be interesting and surprising (haven't tried), but please give him taunt (instead of focus blast ?), or you will really suffer from hazards.
- Giga impact is not used, giving the opponent a free turn to switch/set up is really terrible. Snorlax is not really useful in this team, try to change it to have a better balance concerning resistances and weaknesses (you need something to resist rock, dragon, dark, ghost... so a steal type would really fit).

I agree Smilodon

-I have suggest over Alakazam and its Scarfed Latios. It will usually surprise your opponent because Spec/LO variant is so much more used. Okay reason why I want add this to your team is simply; you dont have anything for <100 base Scarf users or set uppers (e.g. DD Mence).
-Draco Meteor (140 STAB move hits hard)
-Hidden Power Fire (for Scizors and Ferrothorn)
-Surf/Psystrike (Surf hits Heatran who would otherwise wall this; Psystrike STAB not so much use but can be used)
-Trick (Helps agaisnt e.g. Chansey/Blissey if you predict their switch in )
EVs (252 SpA/ 252 Spe/ 4 Def)
Timid (+Spe, -Atk) nature

Also Heatran, Scizor/Conkeldurr could work in this team. But I dont say anything about Sciz/Conkel :P

-Heatran makes good sygnergy with Gyarados/Gengar also if you use Scizor sygnergy would be even better. Set I suggest for
Heatran (Item: Leftovers)
-Fire Blast (85 acc is actually pretty good cost for 120 power, STAB)
-Hp Ice (OHKOs usually Dragons)
-Earthpower (for other heatrans and pokemons that are weak to ground)
-Substitude (This set trump card, helps predicting and allowing hit safely when behind Sub)
EVs (252 SpA/ 252 Spe/ 4 SpD)
Timid (+SpA, -Atk) naure

Good luck with building team :)

Try using Latios over Alakazam, as you can hit harder with Draco Meteors and part dragon gives you useful resists. Infernape over Charizard since it has better attack for a physical role.

Change Counter to Taunt and Mild to Modest for Gengar. I believe to pull Counter off you need some more EVs in HP, etc, and Taunt is useful to stop opposing leads.
Snorlax: Giga Impact is bad; change it to Return and max out its happiness.

Reserved for more

Okay, so I'm gonna go through what was said about each pokemon and take it into consideration. First off Gengar:

I was never really to fond of that movepool, so taunt sounds like a good idea, but is there a way of getting a hazard in there (can gengar learn posion spikes?) so he can roll with something like Icy Wind, Shadow ball, Taunt, Poison spikes perhaps? I dunno. Mild to Modest? That sounds better, to keep his Def up. but what do you guys think of maybe swapping him out for another hazard setter as my lead?

Snorlax: So I've been told to get rid of him, which I'm not sure about, he's my favourite poke, and works wonders when someone pulls out a frail sweeper. I think I'll go with return, sounds like that could be better, Giga Impact was getting annoying.

Jolteon: Okay, so I'm thinking ice hp would be better. But how would I make it that in game? I know it's based on IV's and stuff, but how does one go about forcing the hp type in game (I know on pokemon online, it's a simple as choosing the type)

Charizard: So, I'm thinking maybe swapping him out for NMx13's Heatran? opinions on this?

Alakazam: Definitely changing the that Latios, sounds like it could work wonders. Opinions?
