Hey there! My name's Jam, and I've just recently acquired a 3DS + Alpha Sapphire (recently= three weeks ago). I've been uninvested, yet interested in competitive battling since the Gen IV days, but only now where breeding and trading has become so ridiculously easy that I can get my hands on an Italian Marvel Scale Adamant ExtremeSpeed Dratini from my gym locker's WiFi have I been interested in actually setting up a team for the competitive scene.
I don't have much experience with team building, and while I've been watching a couple videos and going through a few RMTs, I thought it might just be best to put on display what I've developed and let you guys pick it apart. So, here goes:
Pomfnite (Dragonite) (M) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Extreme Speed
- Dragon Dance
Pompnite because he's just very pomf-able. This is the team's late-game sweeper, and sometimes, I even manage to pull off a game without using him. He's also, usually, the win condition of a match, since DD Outrage without confusion usually tears through whatever doesn't resist it, and for what does, well, that's what the rest of the team is for. Although he's arguably my favorite Pokemon, and the key to winning a few matches, his position as late-game sweeper means he doesn't see much use - but that's a fault in my playstyle, I suppose.
Oniichan (Magnezone) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Serious Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Flash Cannon
- Thunderbolt
Onii-chan's name actually derives from the fact that the first thing that came to mind when seeing Magnezone was "Big Brother," in an Orwellian sense. Onii-chan kinda tore that concept apart and made for a contrast in appearance/name, but I've stuck to it. It's role is also very protective, as it's meant to switch into Fairy-types, threatening/eliminating what might stand in Dragonite's way. I heard that this was the basis of what's called a "DragMag" team, but I don't actually know what that really entails. Otherwise, though, it plus Dragonite have put in some serious work when I decide to base my play around the two of them.
Mr. Knobbles (Landorus-Therian) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 140 Atk / 80 Def / 36 Spe
Impish Nature
- U-turn
- Stealth Rock
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
Mr. Knobbles, because he's so damn knobbly (I don't know what I was thinking when I came up with these names sorry). My most reliable lead. Since I plan to actually replicate this team in-game, however, I've run into the trouble that the only 6IV Landorus I managed to get my hands on was Adamant, running a scarf-set. I still need an SR setter though, and Lando is quite useful to switch to if something is particularly annoying. With Magnezone's Volt Switch, these two set up a pretty good Volt-Turn pair as well, although I suspect that might work a lot better if I go with the Scarf set - but that would mean getting another SRer. Hmm. What to do.
Kowai Desu (Sylveon) (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Pixilate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Baton Pass
- Wish
- Hyper Voice
Kowai Desu is most apt in describing this thing. It's tanky as fuck, and after a few CMs it can get very, very scary - not to mention that it's real job is to pass those CMs to Mag/Latias/ChariYard, all of which greatly appreciate the added bulk/lethality. Wish to heal itself or someone else if needed, Hyper Voice because STAB Fairy hits very hard, and I needed a Fairy-type attack. So far, this thing has been my favorite part of the team.
Col. Mustang (Charizard) (M) @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Solar Power
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Roost
Col. Mustang is impotent in the rain - which is why ChariYard packs Drought. ChariYard's main purpose is to break through walls, and to be the initial sweeper. Usually, once Lando has set up rocks, it's Sylveon's job to set up CMs on an opportune opponent, then switch into ChariYard for a sweeping attempt -although really, it's about picking off threats that may hinder Dragonite's clean-up. He's put in good work so far, but ChariYard is a threat most teams try to prepare for, so he never survives long. His role isn't to go for a complete sweep, though, just to take out pesky walls and things I generally don't want to face any other way. Besides, Roost adds some survivability after a kill, or after threatening a switch-out.
Lucy (Latias) (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 Spe
- Healing Wish
- Defog
- Psyshock
- Draco Meteor
Lucy (named such for several reasons - first, that's the name I came up with when getting her in AS, out of the blue, and second, as you can tell, I really like JoJo, so consider her Lucy Stone, D4Cs biggest support.) is essentially my trump card. Switching into Latias with a few CMs Baton Passed over from Sylveon means Draco Meteor can wreck things more than once, and Defog lets me clear the battlefield before Dragonite sweeps. Healing Wish either to get Dragonite back up to speed or, more than likely heal up one of the other defensive mons (Sylveon, Landorus, or Magnezone).
Final Notes:
This team works together on several levels. Sylveon and Charizard complement each other, as Charizard keeps Sylveon's threats away, and Sylveon can set up for Charizard to sweep. Sylveon also helps the other less-dedicated Special Attackers (Magnezone, Latias) become fairly formidable. Magnezone works well with both Dragonite, covering its weakness to Fairy, and Landorus, forming a Volt-Turn pair. It also benefits from Sylveon, and its Fairy-blocking helps Latias, too. Latias' Healing Wish aids the team in general, too. So yeah, lot's of ways to play this team, essentially.
I've had someone in PS note that it's lacking in originality, and on that front, I have to give them absolute right. It's full of things you commonly see in OU, and isn't really all too surprising - but, I'm still starting out my team-building journey, I'll work that out in time as well.
Let me know what you think!
