New world simplicity
This is a basic team testing some of the most recent additions thanks to DLC/Updates, I use it on Switch OU matches and it's been doing good so far but I was looking for opportunities to improve stuff that maybe I can't see.
Urshifu @ Choice Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Wicked Blow
- Close Combat
- Iron Head
- U-turn
The star of the team, I usually lead with this if I don't see too many faster threats on preview (Zeraora, Cinderace, Dragapult). Wicked Blow is very easy to spam. This is against some of the bulkiest mons:
And this is against resisted Pokémon that think they can switch in "safely"
Of course Clefable doesn't always have to be Special Defense but it is still by far the most common set as of now. Close Combat destroys Ferrothorn, Iron Head makes fairies think twice and U-turn can get momentum. I rarely use these moves though, Wicked blow is nuts.
Cinderace @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Libero
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Flare Blitz
- Zen Headbutt
- Low Kick
Nothing makes me feel safer than a speed demon holding a choice scarf that still deals great damage thanks to guaranteed STAB. The first two Pokémon are simple attackers, and as you can see their movesets are a bit similar. Low Kick is the best option against sash Excadrill because while a Turn 1 Earthquake will still hurt, it can't OHKO a Fighting Type Cinderace, and if it didn't set up rocks that's bad for them.
It is also very solid against Terrakion lead. Zen headbutt has shaky accuracy but it improves the Toxapex, Conkeldurr and Rotom-H matchups a lot.
Oh you probably are waiting for my explanation on no Pyro Ball. I don't like missing. Even if Flare Blitz slowly takes my life away, that's Cinderace's role on this team. Fast, ephemeral, explosive.
As you can see there's some Bold Text Pokemon that I appy pressure to easily on the past two descriptions, and I'm adding Mew to that list thanks to Libero U-turn. This means that this team doesn't run Defog or Rapid Spin because, I simply don't think anything can put more than one layer of hazards, and I'm not afraid of just SR or one set of Spikes. But we we'll see.
Chansey (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Stealth Rock
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
Chansey comes back for more fun and while it has a lot of issues like more Knock Off than ever and stuff like literally the first Pokemon on this team, it's still a very easy to use and reliable special wall. I believe many are running it with Teleport for momentum gain; for now I'm instead running Thunder Wave to punish predicted switch-ins. It's so fat that just being in front of a special attacker means that if they stay (and you para) you can keep clicking it until they eventually switch for a double paralysis. Rocks are rocks, helping the attackers or forcing a Defog turn.
Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic Spikes
- Haze
- Recover
- Scald
The third and fourth Pokemon on the team are our main walls. Toxapex is still amazing providing physical walling, instant Toxic Spikes removal and can also set up it's own. Between that, Scald and Chansey's Thunder Wave it's great to see the enemy filled with status conditions (Hex Dragapult sounds tempting to add). Toxapex can even take one Plasma Fist to the face, try it's luck with Scald and switch to regenerate. It also stops Rapid Strike Urshifu, DD Dragapult, non Zen Headbutt Cinderace, and can even take a Draco Meteor from the strongest dragons, then switching to heal while leaving the opponent with a -2 Special attack Pokemon. It's Pex, you know it you love it / hate it.
Volcarona @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Psychic
- Fire Blast
Volcarona joins the meta and is already looking as potentially the best offensive Pokémon on it. Amazing base 100 speed and insanely high Special Attack supported by great Special Defense and a move that raises those three stats +1 along with a new item that prevents any hazard damage...yeah, it's as nuts as it sounds.
I don't think it is Uber suspect by any means since it has some counters like the returning Alolan-Marowak, Chansey, and checks like Cinderace, Dragapult and Lycanroc Dusk. But after some chip damage and at +1 or +2...good luck stopping it. No Giga Drain since it's STAB moves are needed and Psychic is mandatory for wak and Rotom-H.
Magearna @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stored Power
- Shift Gear
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss
The last two Pokémon as you can see will be hunting for setup opportunities during the whole game and Magearna is probably the most dangerous one. Getting another Pokemon knocked out by say Zeraora means Magearna can come in, get to 500 speed, get the CM to survive lots of super effective moves, and steamroll the opponent with a 200+ BP Stored Power or a healing Draining Kiss that uses it's STAB and insanely high natural special attack.
Of course you have no screens unlike others that run this Magearna so don't be an idiot and try to take an Excadrill Earthquake or Cinderace Pyro Ball to the face, it's not happening. But still, if you play this cute robot on the correct moment the reward is sweet.
As you can see this team is weak to Ground, but pretty solid against mostly everything else. Having answers to Excadrill, Hippowdon and the new Krookodile makes me feel safe but still this could be an area of improvement.
That is all thanks for reading and enjoy testing the new meta.
