NFEPL VIII signups begin a week from today. The NFE Staff have been discussing the format for the upcoming tournament and wanted to hear some feedback from the community.

The format used last year was 3 SV, 1 SS, 1 SM, and 1 ND between 6 different teams. Recently, ORAS was brought back into the fold during NFE Triathlon, so the question is: Should we add it to NFEPL? There is an argument to drop ND for a few different reasons. The first being the disconnect between ND NFE and other NFE tiers, and the second being that ND NFE is being represented in the new NDAMPL.

There was another suggestion to avoid dropping ND, and that's the move from 6 starting slots to 8 starting slots. SV has recently seen more newcomers so we feel like 4 SV slots wouldn't be hard to fill, while also being able to slide in ORAS in the final slot.

Of course, there is also the argument that we should wait for ORAS to get some more play/development before adding it into NFEPL.

So, what do you think? Please voice your thoughts below so we can make NFEPL VIII as enjoyable for everyone as possible!

I think expanding the slots from 6 to 8 is a good move, ORAS Cup got more signups than SS and not much less than SM, NFE mainers as well as people who aren't familiar with NFE were able to take on the tier and go far in the cup, which means that everyone should be able to discover the tier for the tournament if needed, even tho i believe we should have enough people who did well in the ORAS Cup to fill the ORAS slot for the tournament anyway.

Adding a 4th SV is also great considering we've recently seen new people interested in the tier, and with the new meta, it shouldn't be too much of a drawback to not know the tier prior to this tournament. Every team will have 1 or 2 people who knows SV anyway just like in every NFEPL to help the people who haven't played the tier before.

Last NFEPL got 132 signups, with 6 teams & 6 starters + 2 subs per team, which required 48 people to be drafted minimum, which was by far enough to get good drafts all around. If we expand the tournament to 8 slots, 11 or 12 players should be required by team which is 72 players drafted minimum, add managers selfbuying and it's gonna end up into the 60s. Considering the playerbase is growing i think we're gonna have more signups than last year and we'll be more than fine in terms of number of signups.

If we can't afford 8 slots for some reason, then i advocate for having ORAS > ND because ND gets represented in the NatDex team tournaments already, while ORAS hasn't been in any team tournament for years, and i don't feel like ND's community is much bigger than any old gen anyway to justify taking a spot over one of our few "active" old gen.

TL;DR
Expanding NFEPL from 6 to 8 slots by adding 4th SV and 1 ORAS, which would make this NFEPL x4 SV, x1 SS, x1 SM, x1 ORAS, x1 ND
If we can't expand, then ORAS > ND imo

I want to piggyback on this as someone who's starting to get properly into the tier cause from what I've seen of recent interest (along with the interest i have myself) expanding to allow for more people to take part in this feels like a net positive, especially if the signups from last nfepl indicate that 8 slots would be doable, and a great way to get more people engaged in the competitive scene of SV but also NFE as a whole. I think NFE was prob one of my fav slots to watch in UMBD and the action taken afterwards in banning misdreavus feels like a great step into making the meta more accessible and exciting to play after such a notable change. Regardless of if i get to participate or not i'm looking forwards to following nfepl along this year ^v^

I will add my personal thoughts in hopes of sparking of some more discussion. I would really prefer moving forward with 8 slots. Last year it felt like we had some strong players on the benches that could definitely be starters + we have a lot more solid players interested in NFE as a whole. We could definitely field 8 slots between 6 teams.

Now, I would prefer we add ORAS and a 4th SV slot. I'm not fully sold on keeping ND since like I stated above, they have another team tournament for inclusion and have a slight disconnect with the NFE community as a whole (I would love to bridge this gap though). I will not fight to have it removed, but I don't have much fight in keeping it. If we do choose to remove it, I could be persuaded to either add another SS in its place. I could also see us doing 4 SV, 2 SS, 2 SM and giving ORAS another year to grow. I know my thoughts are all over the place, but I really want to just voice my thoughts and spark some discussion.

TLDR: Leaning toward 4 SV, 1 SS, 1 SM, 1 ORAS, 1 ND. Wouldn't be opposed to removing ND for 4 SV, 2 SS, 1 SM, 1 ORAS or 4 SV, 2 SS, 2 SM.

I didn't think of removing ND from the tournament but if ND doesn't get any support, then i'd prefer to see it removed from this iteration of NFEPL because of its inclusion in NDAMPL which will begin soon-ish, i don't like having a tier being in multiple team tournaments at the same time because people might be motivated in playing only one of the two, most probably the one who started first, so in this case NDAMPL, i'm afraid people won't have the motivation to prep the same tier twice a week.

To replace it my 1st choice is a 5th SV because it is BY FAR our biggest playerbase, like Celeste said above, NFE recently saw a lot of new people get interest in the tier. Also due to the recent Misdreavus ban, i like using NFEPL to explore the new metagame as much as possible with an additional SV, however 4 SV is already enough to achieve that. 2nd choice is having 2nd SS because it's probably the most known old gen NFE thanks to people playing NFE when SS was current, but really 5th SV is much better imo.

However if ND receives support for its inclusion in this NFEPL then i fully support ND getting in, i don't think it's worth it to add another slot of an existing tier when a tier who's not in a tournament receives support to be included, but i also don't think it's worth it to have a slot "not hyped" and which receives no support due to it being included in another team tournament, which results in overlooking NFEPL to focus on the other tournament which started earlier.

I will make a short post.

I believe that 6 teams and 8 slots should be fine, I wouldn't go further than that. Our playerbase is small, and even though we are improving since like some months back, it is better to not push it too much. I would love to have ORAS back here, but I am not sure if there is enough people interested on it, while ND has a decent amount of people around. So I would defend having ND on track and probably ORAS. Morever, and not biased take (jk), SS has a bigger playerbase so I would be down on having 2 there or on SM even. Having 4 SV it is too much imo when the meta is too unstable right now.

3 SV - 1/2 SS - 1/2 SM- 1 ORAS - 1 ND

By the way, besides I am washed in ZU, I would love to co-manage with someone. Just let me know if someone is looking for a co-manager!

I am all for adding ORAS to NFEPL. It was previously in earlier iterations (1) and I see no reason not to bring it back. Having more sign ups in the cup than SM suggests that people are eager to play this generation of NFE and we should give it some light at the highest stage. If no one vouches for ND NFE it certainly feels like a tier that should be dropped if there's another team tour running. As someone currently prepping for the same tier in different team tours, finding tests if there isn't an active player base for 2 slots can be difficult. I wont pretend I'm aware of how active the ND NFE playerbase so please correct me if I'm wrong. A 5th SV slot feels good considering there's been a huge boom in activity in the tier since the Misdreavus ban. Players seems motivated, and this 5th slot can push the development of the meta even further.
