[OVERVIEW]
Ninetales serves the niche of being RU’s premier sun setter due to its superb offensive utility in support of the weather-based abusers ran alongside it, usually consisting of Chlorophyll users like Venusaur and Lilligant-Hisui, as well as strong Fire-Types like Entei and Armarouge. Additionally, its decent bulk and speed allow it to consistently use its ability to setup sun multiple times throughout a match. Ninetales’ weakness to Stealth Rock, caused by its inability to run Heavy-Duty Boots, is made up for through utility options in Encore, discouraging setup and recovery; Will-o-Wisp, crippling physical attackers; and Healing Wish, recovering damaged sweepers and breakers to a healthy state. While Ninetales provides assistance to its allies through sun, the opposite can also be true, giving a boost to already threatening moves like Entei’s Sacred Fire and Armarouge’s Armor Cannon. The tier is no stranger to weather either, with all forms of it having some semblance of viability that creates strife in Ninetales’ job to keep up sun for the majority of a game.

Other Options
====
Overheat and Scorching Sands can be run, which shore up Ninetales less than threatening offensive presence, though it comes at the cost of consistent damage output and utility. Memento can be used over Healing Wish to give easier opportunities to setup for teammates like Venusaur and Lilligant-Hisui, though this comes at the cost of teams using it to have less longevity overall. Tera Ghost can be ran over Grass to provide additional utility, giving it the properties of a spinblocker, a Fighting-type immunity, and a neutrality to Stealth Rock.
Checks & Counters
====
**Hippowdon & Opposing Weather Setters**: With Ninetales’ main role being to set sun for its team, opponents that have the ability to change the weather threaten its role. Hippowdon is the most common of the weather setters in the tier with its Sand Stream ability, as well as threatening it with a super-effective Earthquake as well as having the opportunity to setup Stealth Rock. Politoed’s Drizzle, as well as Ninetales-Alola’s Snow Warning also change the sun Ninetales sets up into a different weather.
**Fire-Types**: The likes of Volcanion, Armarouge, and Entei all have free entry on Ninetales, as they all take negligible damage from Flamethrower and Energy Ball; they are also immune to Will-o-Wisp and gain a boost to their STABs thanks to the sun.
**Dragon-Types**: Cyclizar and Noivern are unthreatened by sun-boosted Flamethrowers, and can switch in to get free chip and momentum, only really being pestered by Will-o-Wisp.
**Stealth Rock & Knock Off**: Ninetales takes sizable damage from Stealth Rock upon entry, which can make it more vulnerable over the course of a game, and hinder its role in setting up sun multiple times. In the same vein of decreasing the amount of turns that sun is active for, having Ninetales be hit by a Knock Off will remove its Heat Rock, cutting down the turns that sun is active from 8 to 5.
