Welcome to the first tournament for Nintendo Cup 1997 (on Smogon) in over two years! Nintendo's oldest ever official competitive format!

Nintendo Cup 1997 (NC97) is the oldest official competitive format, created before Pokemon ever came to the west! It also has one of the most interesting rulesets of any official competitive format. It's a Bring-6-Pick-3 format that allows participants to send multiple Pokemon of different levels into battle, ranging from level 50-55. As long as the combined level-count isn't above 155, a team will be legal.

NC97 is played on the Japenese versions of the first generation, which has a few notable differences from the international version. Mainly, Blizzard has a ridiculous 30.1% chance to freeze the target, which will effectively instakill them unless the target is hit by a Fire-type move. This leads to Ice-types being incredibly dominant in the meta, being the only Pokemon immune to Freeze in its entirety. Evasion moves are also legal, which is another very effective way to counter Blizzard usage, since it only has 8 PP.

Games tend to be either very quick or very long, depending on if a team if able to successfully set up with Evasion. If not, games are usually decided by the high-level "aces" that each team has. Though, some low-level pokemon are able to shine as well.

The winner will recieve $100 USD via PayPal!

Format ruleset:
  • "Bring 6 Pick 3" format, like in modern Battle Stadium.
  • Level Limit: Pokémon must be between levels 50 and 55, and the 3 Pokémon used cannot exceed 155 total.
    • This effectively gives 5 levels to distribute among a given party.
  • Species Clause: No two Pokémon of the same species.
  • Sleep Clause: No two Pokémon can be asleep, if you activate sleep clause, you will be forced to forfeit and start a new game (if applicable).
    • Unlike Smogon, Rest does count here.
  • Self-KO Clause: Using Self-Destruct or Explosion with your last Pokémon is forfeit, used to resolve ties.
  • Being released prior to Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, moves exclusively learned in those games are banned.
Tournament ruleset:
  • Matches will be best-of-three (Bo3) in every round (defined as the first player to win three games, i.e. ties are not counted.)
  • You may NOT switch teams between games. Use of the challenge command provided below is mandatory.
  • All tournament games must be played on Pokemon Showdown!, and all replays of all tournament games must be posted.
  • The matches will always be played in the [Gen 1] NC 1997 format.
  • This tournament will be double elimination.
  • Each round will last at most one week, barring extensions.
  • All standard Smogon tournament rules apply, and can be found here.
