Novice OU HGSS Team

Hi! So I've read the rules, and really tried hard with this. I know it isn't very good, but I'm going to have to start somewhere and I figure criticism will help. I do *understand* EV training, but I lost my sheet with my tally marks and since I'm going to have to retrain a new team for that, I figured now would be a good time to get some advice in general. With that, here's my team.

Ampharos @Light Clay
Ability: Static
EV Spread: Mostly attack/Special Attack
Nature: Calm
Power Gem
Light Screen
Discharge
Signal Beam

Purpose: Kill stuff, while staying alive, and giving a Spc Attack Boost. I figure the Calm nature helps her special defense long enough to survive to screen and do some damage. I picked the other moves to target a range of Pokemon, specifically Signal Beam to harm Psychic/Dark because I'm really scared of those guys. I like discharge because I can use it when my ground pokemon are also in battle and they aren't affected. Power Gem because I don't have any other rock moves.

Houndoom @Shell Bell
Ability: Flash Fire
EVSpread: Attack and maybe Sp Attack? I bemoan the loss of my tally sheet
Nature:Quiet
Flamethrower
Dark Pulse
Smog
Embargo

So the first thing I have to explain about this guy: why not Nasty Plot? Basically because I don't understand what it's supposed to do. I like Embargo because it stops people from using full heals when their pokemon is doomed. I got smog because I don't have enough pokemon that slowly drain hp, and I figured that with a Calm nature he could do some damage with a poison attack. In practice Smog is pretty weak, and I'm waiting for a better poison TM. Flamethrower because it does lots of damage, and Dark Pulse to kill those scary psychic types, and Steels.

Mamoswine@Focus Sash
Ability:Oblivious
Nature:Rash
Earthquake
Blizzard
Hiddenpower(fire)
AncientPower

I love this pokemon! He's adorable and has a good counter to fire with earthquake, so if I'm in a pinch I can put him up against a fire pokemon and he can survive with one hp and then earthquake them. He's a good ice pokemon.

Scyther@Sharp Beak
Ability:Technician
Nature:Brave
Agility
Wing Attack
X-Scissor
Night Slash

Wing Attack is powered up by technician (or at least I think it is, I'm not sure if the sharp beak undoes that) and agility is to make up for the brave nature.

Milotic@Leftovers
Ability: Marvel Scale
Aqua Ring
HydroPump
RainDance
Safegaurd

My water pokemon! I want to teach her ice beam, but I don't know how.

Vileplumeh@Miracle Seed
Ability: Chlorophyll
Nature:Sassy
Acid
Synthesis
RazorLeaf
SolarBeam

Grass/Poison. I'm thinking about getting megadrain or leech seed instead of razor leaf so that he does more damage after passing out.

So, that's my team. Now for the giant list of threats, which I only have the knowledge to cover by type/move type

Azlef: Hopefully Houndoom can get him with dark pulse, and if he uses flamethrower then that just makes my flamethrower stronger. Houndoom shouldn't have an issue with any of his other moves either
Breloom: Um, hopefully I can get him with a flamethrower before he spores me. Maybe I should teach my Vileplume spore.
Celebi: Houndoom shouldn't have a problem with him, with moves to hurt both grass and psychic
Dugtrio: Scyther is immune to ground attacks as he is flying, and should be able to slowing get him with X-Scissor. Maybe one day I'll find somebody to trade him to and evolve him and then I'll have a super effective steel move. I suppose Milotic could handle him too
Electivire: This one is tricking. I think Mamoswine would do okay, at any rate he wouldn't be 1kod
Empoleon: Ampharos could take him with discharge
Flygon: I think he is 4x weak against ice, so Mamoswine could get him with blizzard
Gengar: Houndoom could Dark Pulse him
Gyrados: Amphraos could discharge on him
Heatran: Milotic could get him wet with hydropump, I've never actually seen one in game so I'm not sure how well that would work, but he is weak against water, right?
Heracross: Flamethrower
Infernape: Milotic is a counter, I think
.....

Right, so I know that the list goes on, but you can see that I've made an effort, and I'm not even sure if I'm doing this right. If I've learned anything from this exercise it's that I still have no idea what I'm doing. (Doing this has been pretty discouraging, really.) But I want to learn! Please don't lock my post, I just think it might be a waste of time to keep proposing psuedo counters like this. Anyway, I could use some advice!!! Thanks!

fourth gen teams go in the fourth gen rmt archive, this is 5th gen. your team is amost entirely uu, try swapping mamoswine with a uu poke ( try steelix, it complements milotic for a good wall pair) and call it a uu team. you have abilities and evs all over the place, and some really odd attacks.

change acid on vileplume with sludge bomb, razorleaf for sunny day (alowing you to activat chlorophyl and sweep), and give him life orb to give him the power boost needed for a sweep.

why would you want attack evs on houndoom and ampharos?!? they dont even know any physical attacks! put thier evs into spattack and speed. swap smog on houndoom for nasty plot. i know you said you dont understand what it does, but it boosts special attacks. if you think your not to good at pokemon, and you want help making teams, i would suggest the smogon tutoring site, its very helpfull.

Youre supposed to put actual evs, not what you put here and this is a 5th gen RMT section, no 4th gen RMTs may be posted here

I can help you I guess. I don't know if you have Action Replay so a few sets will be difficult to get.

First of all if you really like Mamoswine you can try it as a lead:

478.png

Mamoswine @ Focus Sash
Ability: Snow Cloak
Adamant Nature (+att/-spatt) , 6 hp, 252 att, 252 speed
- Stealth Rock
- Endeavor
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard

Standard lead moveset. Stealth Rock is a really good move. Endeavor when left with 1 hp, although it needs some prediction. Earthquake for STAB, Ice Shard too and for priority.

Secondly I would replace Scyter and go for Scizor:

212.png

Scizor @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
Adamant Nature (+att/-spatt), 248 hp, 252 att, 8 speed
- U-turn
- Superpower
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit

Standard Choice Band set.

For Milotic I would change the set to this:

350.png

Milotic @ leftovers
Bold Nature (+def/-att), 252 hp, 252 def, 6 speed
- Toxic
- Recover
- Surf
- Hp Electric/ Hp Grass

Bulky moveset. Toxic to cripple the opponent, Recover to gain health back. Surf for STAB, reliable accuracy and higher pp than Hydro Pump. Hp Electric for Gyara and Grass for Swampert and both for other bulky waters that are not immune to it.

I would change Houndoom to Heatran to still have the Flash Fire ability:

490.png

Heatran @ Choice Scarf
Naive Nature (+speed/-spdef), 6 hp, 252 spatt, 252 speed
- Flamethrower/ Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- HP Electric/ Grass/ Ice
- Explosion

Standard Choice Scarf set. Hp is what you like and your team needs. Don't go for the same Hp as Milotic though.

I would change Vileplume to Shaymin:

497.png

Shaymin @ leftovers
Bold Nature (+def/-att), 252 hp, 220 def, 36 speed
- Leech Seed
- Rest
- Seed Flare
- Hp Fire

Rest combined with Natural Cure is nice. Hp fire for Scizor/Forry/Skarmory and opposing grass types.

Ok last but not least replacing Zapdos> Ampharos:

145.png

Zapdos @ leftovers
Calm Nature (+spdef/-att), 248 hp, 228 spdef, 32 speed
- Thunderbolt
- Roost
- Light Screen
- HP Ice

Just as Ampharos this Zapdos has a lot of Special Defense and can set up Light Screen. Thunderbolt for STAB and combined with Hp Ice the BoltBeam combo. No Heat Wave because Heatran and Shaymin already have a fire type. Roost for recovery.

Hope I helped you, I tried to match the differences with your old team (some pokes are the same) and change the movesets. Good luck with it!

You'll have to expand your descriptions for Scyther, Milotic and Vileplume or I'll have to lock this thread.
