Alright, here to discuss cetitan, alolatales, baile and cinccino Note: do not regard my opinions as good information, i dont play this tier too much and my opinion is most likely not great but im putting it out here anyways.

:ninetales-alola: im gonna start with the simplest of them all, alolatales. This mon imo is not banworthy. If we ban this mon, abomasnow takes over this role and does a slightly worse job. You still have the issue of the snow archetype still existing. This thing is a non-issue.

:cinccino: imo this thing also isnt worth banning, its pretty much a tier staple atp and i fear it might make hazards too strong. Banning this mon does more harm than good, but imo this mon should still be kept an eye on.

:cetitan: i feel like this is the issue with snow teams. Its the abuser. Its the negative. Imo this mon does so much more harm than good to this tier and i think this mon should definitely be suspected if not banned. This whole archetype wont be much of an issue if cetitan goes, since alolaslash wont be great anyways.

:oricorio: this mon needs to have an eye kept on it imo. It can do what made sensu so brilliant, and the main issue with sensu being tera steel + taunt, this mon can do that too. Imo a sharp eye should be kept on this mon and potentially pa’u. I could see this being suspected in the future.

Wanted to share my thoughts and why I voted the way I did on there recent slate! Thanks again guys for having me on as part of the Rotating Council for this month!

:Oricorio-Sensu:Sensu
I think Django hit the nail on the head so I won't elaborate too much more here. Ori is the kind of mon you can throw on a hyper offense team (terrain + seed or cincino + kee berry have both shown to be effective) to help you cheese your way through the balance/fat matchups. While sensu itself often gets overwhelmed by more offensive teams, it is typically placed onto teams that already have an advantage/do well in those matchups. Shengineer made a good point over discord earlier about how sensu doesn't exactly invalidate a singular play style like something like shao did (since you can pack a check like copper/diancie or overwhelm it with an offensive team), but I still think it was unhealthy and a pretty clear ban here. If pom pom was broken for cheesing, then surely sensu with even more tournament success doing the same thing is also ban worthy.

:ninetales-alola::cetitan:Snow
The conversation is linked about these two so I think it makes more sense for me to talk about these together. I do think cetitan + alotales is a broken combination. Alotales is too good at supporting cetitan, and cetitan has too few defensive/revenge killing options once it is set up. Once cetitan is +6 in snow and under veil, the counterplay is mostly avalugg, ditto, or some more niche options (orthworm which hasn't been doing well, balloon keys, balloon fire tauros and some other options that probably aren't worth mentioning.) I think it is too easy to have cetitan set up in this situation for it to be this strong into the meta. Logically I see the argument for an alotales ban, since cetitan was considered fine (and not used often) when we only had abomasnow as the only snow/veil setter. (I do think snow has been good since the drought ban but that's another matter and it wasn't quite on this level either.) So I see the pro-alotales ban argument, but I also don't think it's the best solution for the tier. I really think the main issue is how strong cetitan is. Cetitan is naturally bulky and even more so with the snow defense boost and potential veil. Priority isn't a reliable stop to cetitan since it can tank most priority moves typically and it potentially has a faster ice shard which usually can ohko the priority mons. Defensive stops are... limited and susceptible to coverage. Eq -> superpower kills avalugg in snow and body press doesn't kill cetitan back without chip. You can hopefully get said chip damage on cetitan on the belly drum turn but you can't get the positioning wrong there. Cetitan is of course beatable, but I think it is too restricting in the builder to be healthy. I think the best outcome for the tier would be to ban cetitan, but either way I think action would be helpful.

There is some concern that even after a hypothetical cetitan ban snow/veil offense would still be broken but I don't think thats the case here. Unlike when sun was a concern, there is a huge gap between cetitan and the other snow sweepers. I made a point to ladder with sun without the key abusers (scov/venu) and I still considered it to be too much. Snow though is a different case. I don't think anyone is arguing that aloslash is broken with alotales support. It is good and perfectly functional but it doesn't have anywhere near the same offensive pressure. I think beartic is actually pretty decent under snow (sd | ice stab | cc | encore is a good set/breaker) but it's base speed is so slow that it can still be revenged by common scarfers so it operated a bit like torterra. Weatherball mons are good but don't seem to be an issue. The snow abusers outside of cetitan are not problematic imo. You could argue that veil support on cinc-HO teams with mons like cm scream and scyther are potentially too strong, but I'm not convinced it isn't just cetitan that is the problem there. If we were to ban cetitan and veil offense is still an issue after the fact, I would of course support banning alotales instead and unbanning/retesting cetitan. It seems like most of us (9/12 who voted) consider snow to be an issue, but not everyone agrees on which aspect is the issue. I think a cetitan ban would be the best outcome for the tier.

When it comes to Oricorio Baile (the fire one), would it be any harder for it to run non-boots sets like kee berry or terrain seed due to 4x rocks weakness? I'm assuming that plus the fact that it needs to tera faster against bulky waters is what holds it back when compared to sensu and pom pom while Pa'u moreorless has the same bad matchups as Sensu with maybe less matchups that give it completely free setup which makes me wonder why everyone is looking at Baile over Pa'u. I guess on kee berry sets you're already running cinccino so rocks aren't a huge issue at all.

I think that the vote for Snow could have been conducted a little differently. Its a bit of a unique circumstance as the two bans are mostly mutually exclusive. I would have liked to see an initial vote on if Snow required a ban, and then a follow up vote on which of the two was the better option, assuming the first vote passed the 2/3rds threshold. Looking at the breakdown it seems clear that the council believes, as a whole, that Snow needs something banned but is split on which Pokemon it should be.

Wanted to echo statements above calling for Cetitan action > others

It seems pretty clear that Cetitan is the broken element on these snow teams. Alolan Ninetales is not enabling other threats to remotely the same degree, and while Cincinno does boost Cetitan + others a ton, I don't think Cetitan interactions would change very much with it gone. I find that a lot of times, with or without veil or hazards, Cetitan can easily find opportunities to belly drum. When your defense is boosted and you have access to Tera, I don't find the lack of Veil or hazards a big inhibitor to its sweeps.

I also think it's important to mention how in numerous metagames, Pokemon can become broken/overcentralizing as time progresses. Time that allows new cores, new techs, and new innovation to occur. I think Alolan Ninetales just accelerated this progress, and that inevitably, there'll probably have been Aboma/Cetitan/Cincinno teams running around. But even without these hypotheticals, it's apparent that when Cetitan is present in a game, it is very centralizing. I can't say the same for the other proposed bans.

If a suspect happened right now, I'd probably vote ban. It's definitely not unbeatable, there's some solid checks and with good play its setup time can be minimized. But I dislike its 'extremeness'. It can completely obliterate a team very quickly, and it leads to complete centralization around itself both ingame and in the builder.

Another week of tournament stats to peruse, particularly interesting as we can now compare to ladder stats as well.

Ladder stats are here.

Things I found interesting:
- Flygon, Cinccino, Diance are one two and three in both ladder and tournament play, with tournament being even more centralised around these three. They are all checked by the most popular Steel in the tier, Bronzong, who has now dropped to a 30% winrate. This Steel overwhelm style of play is definitely strong, and Diance has a 70%+ winrate despite Bronzong hard stopping it.
- Toxtricity also has a 70% winrate, contributing to the same style of overwhelming normal type checks.
- For all the demand for action on Cetitan and its perceived dominance, it's sitting at around 8% in both tournament and ladder play, and only winning one game out of 5 this week (which was actually a mirror match).
- Avalugg is still used around the same amount (18%), but the meta seems to have centralised around other threats overtaking it in usage - Cinccino, Diance, Tauros, Ninetales. Other Cetitan checks (Ditto, Orthworm) were not seen at all this week, while others like Rotom-H saw very niche usage.
- If I was looking at this usage as a scout, I would say Cetitan looks extremely free as it's not being prepped for defensively. So why aren't people bringing it? To me it looks like a very fast paced meta which isn't giving Cetitan many opportunities to set up.

I would urge people to pay attention to these stats (and the replays from them) when considering tiering action, given this is the best indication we have right now of what the metagame actually is. Stats don't determine everything, but they do show what people think is strong and what has a good likelihood of winning, and the trends between weeks are good indications of how peoples prep style and perception changes.

First and foremost, I want Snow to be nerfed asap. I want to see either Ninetales-A or Cetitan quickbanned, and I will be satisfied as long as either action is taken. The fact that Avalugg has seen a sharp rise in both tour and ladder usage is already telling of how centralising Snow is. However, if I am required to pick a side, I will choose to quickban Ninetales-A. I will not dwell too much on existing arguments about how pre-shifts Cetitan is fine since Abomasnow is shit, and how Ninetales-A is too fast and bulky as a support mon.

What I want to add on is that punishing Ninetales-A is borderline impossible. In NU, there are zero auto-weather setters to reset Snow, which means that setting up Snow + Veil is very easy at zero cost. Avalugg walls physical attackers for eternity. HO continues to be dominant as Veil is hard to remove; Defoggers are scarce and you have to run Raging Bull or broken Cinccino to remove Veil. I can also see Weather Ball abusers like Tornadus, Raikou, and Kilowattrel running rampant, and once your Ground-type drops to Weather Ball how are you going to stop Volt Switch. QD Frosmoth in particular is going to be super cheese since its ability Ice Scales buffs its Sp Def as well, though admittedly this is theorymon since I have yet to see it in high-level play. All in all, Ninetales-A facilitates unhealthy playstyles too easily, and I actually feel that Veil HO is still quite under-explored.

Banning weather setters is not unheard of since there is already precedent. Gigalith is banned in SM NU, while Pelipper is banned in SV UU due to its great support capabilities and thereafter Rain has seen negligible usage overnight since Politoed is a big downgrade.

Ngl I felt a sense of déjà vu since Snow has caused similar tiering headaches just last generation in SS NU. I gave a 5, 4, 3 to Ninetales-A, Cetitan, and Cinccino respectively, but irregardless I hope to see a quickban instead of a suspect since at this point it is abundantly clear that the playerbase wants Snow acted on.

Thank you to everyone who participated, the survey results are in and the people have spoken!

:Cetitan: :cetitan: :cetitan:
With a whopping 4.2 / 5 average, Cetitan has been deemed as too strong by the NU Council and community and is therefore quickbanned from SV NU effective immediately. dhelmise Marty

:ninetales-alola: :ninetales-alola: :ninetales-alola:
Ninetales-Alola scored a very modest 2.57, meaning that it is not deemed as a particularly pressing issue in the meta right now, and thus there are no plans for tiering action on it.

:cinccino: :cinccino: :cinccino:
Finally, Cinccino scored a 3.25, indicating that we should be monitoring Cinccino closely throughout the next month as a potential suspect candidate should that score continue to climb.

Grassy Terrain, Oricorio, and Basculegion all received a number of mentions from the community as components of the tier which they would like to see monitored as potential problems down the line, however the majority of responders felt nothing else was a pressing issue. The average balance and enjoyment ratings of SV NU have scored around 6.2 each, which should hopefully rise with the banning of Cetitan. We'll be continuing to take in your feedback and take action where necessary in order to get this number closer to a sweet spot of around 7. In the meantime, let us know how the meta feels without Cetitan in it and stay tuned for more news in the future.

I've taken a 3/4 month break from NU because I've been busy with college stuff. Whats poppin with the tier (ur personal enjoyment, bans, new dominant mons, sets)?
Hope whoever reads this has a great day :sphearical:

we got alolan ninetales and amoonguss, banned mienshao, oricorio sensu and cetitan, had a survey, watched luka get traded to the lakers and then speed get snapped in half the next day lock in bro

Regarding Cinccino, I'll just screenshot what I said in another server:

I understand why some people might be on the edge in regards to the fluffy cat, but I personally don't think it's the issue with current NU. In fact I think it's kinda cool in the sense it facilitates HO making it an actual meta playstyle you gotta account for, much to the likes of BO and similar builds. Wouldn't be opposed to seeing it be suspected though, as I reckon HO might be a bit overbearing rn with the amount of offensive tools we have (which goes to show why we're the Ditto tier rn).

However, talking about HO... I think it's time we take a closer look at terrain, more specifically grassy - although electric could very well take over if grassy is banned, since most the main abusers are still there although having a worse setter. Just looking at our NUBL, we have 2 mons that were a huge issue under terrain (the birds), and 2 that also saw great success in those kinda teams, although obviously not limited to them (Cress, Thorns). We've recently had two quickbans related to terrain (and yes I know they were also used on non-terrain), and honestly we might be heading to the third one very soon once people figure out which one's better between Pa'u and regular... and then banning the 4th and final one after. While this might point to the issue being the birds, the 2 left just have almost no place in "regular" builds due to either way worse offensive or defensive typing, demanding a way bigger investment than the other two did. Thus, it's safe to assume grassy is the thing pushing them over the edge proper.

Drawing a parallel to SS Hail - the early bans, when both AVeil and Slush Rush were dominating - and SV Sun, once it's clear a playstyle is overbearing as a whole we should start looking at enablers rather than individual pieces. Right now I do believe grassy terrain in its entirety is too much for the tier, both with the grassy seed spam teams and builds like stories' ones that capitalize on the offensive aspects (like Grassy Glide) of it, and action should be taken on Grassy Surge through a council vote preferably. In fact I think that, if council does agree that it is too much, action should also be taken ASAP for electric if it ever shows any level of dominance in tournament play as it shares many aspects with grassy and in theory could fill in the gap left by it.

Just gonna second this, would like to see a council vote on both birds + the 3 auto-terrains + maybe cinccino, would def wait a bit tho to see how meta has settled after ori + cet ban

I wouldn’t mind more discussion on grassy surge as a whole, but any discussion about either of the two other terrains is completely unwarranted.

Electric terrain has NEVER been good this gen - not when Raichu-A arrived in DLC1, and not any time since. Pincurchin is complete trash compared to Thwackey, and ETerrain is not nearly as good as GTerrain. GTerrain provides passive sustain and nerfs EQ, which is a direct buff to tera steel seed sweepers. ETerrain on the other hand has none of those buffs, but also buffs opposing Volt Switch and other electric attacks, making it easier to chip down sweepers and kill them. The archetype has not seen any tournament or proper ladder use this generation (not even in Mesprit/Uxie/Grimmsnarl meta in DLC1). There have been no replays and no results to show that it’s even viable, let alone strong.

PTerrain has seen some use around last year’s ladder tour, but has since completely dropped off the map, with Indeedee tumbling down the VR with every slate. There have been no tour results since LT.

Any action or discussion on either of those archetypes is completely nonsensical and a waste of time. They are bad.

Welcome to the the first installment of the Shengineer tech compendium. I've always been an explorer of the unknown when it comes to trying new sets (Next Best Thing?). Today I wanted to share many of the cool options that Toxtricity has at its disposal! Toxt has really shot up in usage as one of, if not THE best special breaker in the tier thanks to its insane damage output and surprisingly great defensive typing (8 resistances, 2 status immunities, and only 2 weaknesses!)

:sv/toxtricity:

The Standard:
Toxtricity @ Choice Specs / Choice Scarf
Ability: Punk Rock
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Normal
Modest Nature
- Boomburst
- Overdrive
- Volt Switch
- Sludge Wave

Nothing to really mention here, this is as standard as it gets. Click Boomburst and win game. Scarf is less popular, and is slower than other scarfers, but can be a very potent Volt Switch pivot with potential to clean late game.
Toxtricity @ Throat Spray
Ability: Punk Rock
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Normal
Timid Nature
- Shift Gear
- Boomburst
- Overdrive
- Sludge Wave

A popular choice for Hyper Offense teams, works well with other special attackers to overwhelm defensive checks.
The Innovative:
Substitute (Toxtricity) @ Leftovers
Ability: Punk Rock
Tera Type: Normal / Dark
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe | 244 HP / 24 SpA / 64 SpD / 176 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Boomburst
- Overdrive
- Sludge Bomb / Psychic Noise / Snarl

Substitute is one of my personal favorite Toxtricity sets. It takes advantage of mons like Vaporeon using Protect to scout your moves and greatly eases the burden of prediction vs switch-ins. If you want, you can use the completely unhinged bulky spread, which nets you the following calc while still being faster than Jolly Golurk:

-1 0 SpA Gastrodon Earth Power vs. 244 HP / 64 SpD Tera Dark Toxtricity: 75-88 (21.3 - 25%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO

Tera Dark carries the additional benefit of a Psychic Noise immunity, which would bypass your substitute.
Encore Pivot (Toxtricity) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Punk Rock
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 HP / 96 Def / 24 SpA / 136 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Boomburst
- Toxic
- Encore
- Volt Switch

I credit zS for the creation/inspiration of this set. Boomburst is still Boomburst, no matter how you slice it. This set leverages that nice defensive typing and Toxt's ability to switch into Fairy-types like Sylveon, with insurance from Encore preventing them from Tera-Steeling their way past you. Toxic is the main draw of this set, as it cripples some of Toxt's switch ins - mainly Porygon2 who would otherwise wall it. Finally, Volt Switch helps you position your teammates and not just sit there doing nothing against Steels or Muk-Alola. I invested into physical bulk in this example, which makes it into a decent Flamigo check (good odds to avoid the 2HKO from Choice Banded!).

252 Atk Choice Band Flamigo Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 96 Def Toxtricity: 159-187 (44.9 - 52.8%) -- 26.6% chance to 2HKO
Physical (Toxtricity) @ Air Balloon
Ability: Technician
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant/Jolly Nature
- Shift Gear
- Gunk Shot
- Thief
- Drain Punch / Encore / Taunt

Cursed with a 65 base power Spark, Technician Toxtricity is an awkward yet intriguing choice. emikatana changed my mind a little about this set - it would have originally wound up in the 'dubious' category. 98 is not as bad of an Attack stat as it originally appears (Flygon only has 100!), Gunk Shot is a powerful move, and Technician boosted Thief hits pretty damn hard. This set does struggle into Steel-types a bit, but stealing their Leftovers can be quite annoying, and if you're running Encore you can lock them into Iron Defense. The surprise factor can also catch special walls off guard - this set does rely somewhat on tricking the enemy into thinking you're a special attacker, which might be given away by the Air Balloon. You could also try Swagger + Mirror Herb with Trailblaze...
The Dubious:
Toxtricity-Low-Key @ Chesto Berry

Few points:
- Cetitan finally beating the fraud allegations and getting a broken winrate
- Avalugg confirming the fraud allegations with an awful 20% winrate
- Ninetales and Cinccino continue to dominate usage above and beyond Cetitan teams
- Toxicroak shooting up and getting 80% winrate, perhaps in response to many Vaporeon teams

Zong and Diancie have been two of my favorite defensive mons in the tier, specifically for balanced. Their win rate this week defintley stands out among other staples like Lugg, Registeel, and Amoonguss. I love that they can get value out of every turn by means of hazards, or disruption through psynoise/encore, or getting boosts to put pressure on weakened teams. AKA actually doing something. Also shoutout my goat flygon for being the undisputed king of NU.

Super interesting trends this week:
  • Flygon, Bronzong, Diancie triangle continues to dominate, with all three having positive winrates for the first time
  • Basculegion having a huge 65% winrate with almost as much usage as the top 3
  • Cinccino and Ninetales winrates continuing to drop - has the meta adapted to the Steel overwhelm style?
  • Kilowattrel continues to get a lot of usage and now a massive winrate
  • Flamigo is a new hot trend and performing very well
  • Thwackey and Oricorio (i.e. Grassy Terrain) underperforming in a big way
  • Incineroar, Wetbull, and Muk-A dropping off a cliff in usage, which were both easily top 5-10 mons before
  • Gastrodron, Ambipom, and Hariyama all having very impressive winrates - are these the anti-meta mons?

Bonus:

Talking points:
  • The meta is not kind to Flygon and Cinccino, despire being very frequently used, they have sub par winrates. People are willing and able to prepare for these threats
  • Bronzong continues to be the best Steel type
  • Kilowattrel, Basculegion, Avalugg, Flamigo, Gastrodon, Amoonguss, Muk-A are all running around with decent usage and outstanding winrates. To me this is an indication that the metagame has slowed down a bit, to the point where balance tools like Muk-A are useful again, and slower breakers like Flamigo are viable
  • Eterns favourite bug (Scyther) only has a 34% winrate
  • Swampert, Sylveon, Infernape, Heracross are all low in usage but 65%+ winrate. Are we sleeping on these mons?
  • Typhlosion really is pointless and needs to drop to PU. As does Breloom, Tentacruel, Vileplume, Milotic, Galvantula
Let me know what you guys think!

Okay bro.

I definetely think that these stats show that HO has finally become a lot less prevelant in the meta, or at the very least, dealable. HO is still good, but its less auto slap as before, and now you have to really think about it. But I'd like to take about two stats in particular.

| 26 | Thwackey | 19 | 8.12% | 42.11% |
| 29 | Oricorio-Pa'u | 18 | 7.69% | 44.44% |

:oricorio pau:
That bird that etern hates. From my experience building g-terrain in the tier during my SSNL run, this mon is honestly mid. Not horrible btw, if you need something to brutalise bulkier teams, then this mon is the best, but frankly, its got just that. If you don't need that (which I find you don't), then its more often then not worth bringing this mon. Not only is it mostly sack fodder in more offensive matchups, but frankly enough, balance teams can find ways to deal with it. Alluring voice vapo+incin+steels can usually deal with it well enough, even if one or two mons have to go down. And that is a trade that they are willing to take, as if pau is down, the match is probably going to be won since the g-terrain team will spec into other MU's more. And somebody might say "oh, but what if the g-terrain team uses other mons to beat balance?", but then in that case, it kinda defeats the purpose of using it and you are making g-terrain teams, which are already not reliable, even more MU fishy.

Frankly, I've found other g-terrain abusers such as band breloom or g-seed chandy much better for these sort of teams. Breloom does insane damage with bullet seed while having mach punch for offense, while g-seeed chandy can usually trade with offense due to its defense boost. I think NU overhyped this pokemon quite a bit, it isn't nearly as destructive as the other forms we banned.

Anyways, just wanted to yap about this mon, as its something I haven't had a chance to really discuss.

I think the meta is really great right now and have enjoyed it a decent bit in NUCL and seasonal since the Mienshao and Cetitan bans, so figured I'd share some random thoughts about the meta. HO has fallen off in recent times, doesn't feel overwhelming anymore and teams have adapted nicely around it. I've seen some discussion about Scyther (mostly etern :skull:) which I can understand concerns about but its probably way too early for any bans, need to see more from it before any action. Flygon is easily the most splashable Pokemon in the tier, unsure if I'd call it the best but definitely the most splashable. Probably an unpopular opinion but Cinccino on the other hand, I think is slightly overrated and don't really see how its an S rank mon at all when the other S rank is Flygon, maybe its the set Tidy Up/Tail Slap/Knock Off/Encore set that most people use coz it doesn't capitalise on all the 567472312423 coverage moves it gets but most of the time it just trades 1v1 at best and dies. Bronzong is the best Steel by far and its not close, checks a bunch of different stuff and the combination of Psy Noise/Gyro/BP is hard to switch into. I think Glowbro is super underrated and deserves more love, most teams aren't prepared that well against it too + goobs the best Steel (Bronzong). Oh also hazards are OP coz the removal options suck in the tier. Balance/BO probably the best playstyle right now so hope it stays that way. Balance/BO being good is also very nice for Chandelure coz its almost impossible to switch-in to defensively (only like Muk-A and Incineroar can do it at the top of my head), was kinda annoying to factor in building at some points but its probably a fine mon in the tier. Kilowattrel is amazing btw, great speed tier, pivot, ability and typing. Great tier, hope the shifts don't fuck it up as usual!

A bit of a late response here, but I was thinking about it a bunch recently when considering the state of the tier. I'm wondering if HO is really less prevalent/worse because people are adapting or because it's really boring? I know that I personally feel like it's still possibly the most reliable structure right now if done right thanks to really strong pieces like Tales, Cincinno, Diancie, Scyther etc, but it also feels like it has very little variation to the structures which has led to me writing them off as "all the same" or "boring", even when they aren't. I'm curious if others feel the same way about HO in the tier currently.

I also think that this Registeel rise will make HO a solid amount better. Before this, Registeel shut down a lot of HO shenanigans with T Wave and natural bulk and Copper just can't do that. Are we seeing another HO renaissance like before Registeel got super popular?
