NU Niches Archive

Welcome to the NU Lower Tier Niche Archive! The scope of this thread is to provide a compendium of all the Pokemon in tiers below NU (excluding most LC) and describe whether they have a niche that warrants any potentially viable sets in NU over any Pokemon that might "outclass" them. Basically, any Pokemon which have a valid niche but aren't consistent or prominent enough to be ranked on the VR can be discussed here, e.g Miltank, Drampa, Haunter, Gorebyss, etc. Your posts in this thread should include a full Pokemon set as well as a paragraph or more describing why this Pokemon has a niche in the tier, what it does, etc. (Replays are encouraged)

You are welcome to debate what the best sets are for these niche Pokemon but keep it civil and remember that this is not the VR. You're encouraged to explore any relevant avenue of these Pokemon within reason. It's important to note that despite these Pokemon having niches, it doesn't necessarily equate to them being good, consistent, or worth using most of the time. This is just a resource for people to research and experiment with niche things that can potentially make them worth putting on a team. This archive will be updated every few weeks or so by the owner of this thread so we can build up a nice list of sets for this archive with descriptions to match. Please refrain from posting about any obviously unsalvageable Pokemon like Furret or Seaking, posts like these will be deleted. Any niches posted in this thread should have some sort of merit which would make them usable in the context of the tier. Most importantly, have fun and discuss to your hearts content, happy posting!

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature

- Solar Beam
- Weather Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Growth

so this thing is broken under sun
it's absolutely worthless without sun but if you get a growth up things just die left and right
even without growth it can be absolutely terrifying

also a cool tech i wanted to try but never did is synthesis/strength sap over growth
it's already broken so if you stay alive longer then you can be broken longer

Haunter @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sludge Wave
- Shadow Ball
- Substitute
- Pain Split

since Haunter is pretty much dead (f off, VR council) I thought this would be appropriate. i still use haunter on occasion because it does an excellent job of destroying your common balance teams b/c of the power and coverage that dual STABs bring you. subsplit furthers its potential as a balance breaker b/c you can sub down on the really passive stuff like blastoise and then pain split for all the health back. overall good pokemon but remember to click x vs sneasel.

eternally has a boner for this mon so i can guarantee this post will be liked by him

EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
IVs: 0 HP / 0 Def / 0 SpD
- Accelerock
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt
- Endeavor

Focus Sash, Endeavor, Accelrock, LYCANROC. The competitive variant of a gimmick, the suicide lead lycanroc carves out a niche as one of the best leads for offense(for what it's worth). The fast speed tier of base 112, STAB priority that actually dents pokemon weak to it and rocks you certainly want to have up when using it. Taunt helps preventing you from being set up bait.

Lilligant @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Storm
- Energy Ball
- Healing Wish
- Hidden Power [Ice] / Hidden Power [Fire]

Sadly, in this gen, Lilligant's QD set is outperformed in NU by Vivillon and other Grass-types like Sceptile or Whimsicott. But Lilligant has one thing over other Grass-types in the tier: Healing Wish. With this, you can give mons like SD Incineroar a 2nd chance at sweeping, and unlike Z-Memento, this doesn't take up the Z-move slot. 110 Special Attack is also really strong so Lilligant's Leaf Storms will hurt like hell. HP Ice is preferred so you aren't boned by Xatu, but HP Fire is there for Steelvally, Mega Obama, and Ferroseed I guess while still hitting other Grass-types.

Raichu @ Fightinium Z / Electrium Z
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast / Grass Knot
- Grass Knot / Hidden Power [Ice]

So, a while ago I was looking for a way to punish Golbat, as the tier sorta relies on rocks to do that more than anything else, and was also wanting a way to block volt, as the team I was using was running Diancie rather than a ground type. Turns out Raichu sorta does both of those things, by virtue of Lightning Rod and actively setting up on Bat. Another plus side is the fact that the tier actually isn't all that fast outside of like, Scarf Pass, and random Sceptile / Sneasel / Aero, so if you ever just knock Pass, this can easily win the game. Outspeeding Lisk while blocking its volt makes this really fun to play. Would recommend.

Bouffalant @ Leftovers
Ability: Reckless
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Head Charge
- Earthquake
- Protect
- Swords Dance

Fairly simple set, SD lets you set up, Reckless Head Charge does big damage, Earthquake has good coverage, Protect lets you scout out Choiced Monkey. Beware of Rotom and Decid, as you can't really hurt those. You could run like Stone Edge over protect, but that ain't hitting the ghosts that hard, so just pair with like Sneasel or Heliolisk to punish them. Megahorn over protect, and then a defensive ability like Sap Sipper or Soundproof is also an option, but IME the ability to scout monkey, and abuse leftovers is invaluable.

Relevant Calc:
+2 252+ Atk Reckless Bouffalant Head Charge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: 309-364 (78.4 - 92.3%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Gorebyss @ Ghostium Z / White Herb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shell Smash
- Shadow Ball
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam

IME this is the most reliable version of Gorebyss; use this on HO. Z-Shadow Ball lets you do dumb stuff like even OHKO AV Slowking, while coverage between Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, and Shadow Ball hits essentially the whole tier except Vaporeon for very heavy damage, and even then Vap is 2hko'd by Shadow Ball into Z-Shadow Ball, although it runs Protect, which makes that real risky. Basically, shove this on screens, and it'll prolly do work. White Herb is also an option, as it means you can set up on stuff that isn't just predicted switch outs, but you do miss the extra power vs stuff like AV King and Vap.

Relevant Calcs:
+2 252 SpA Gorebyss Never-Ending Nightmare (160 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Vaporeon: 328-387 (70.8 - 83.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Gorebyss Never-Ending Nightmare (160 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Slowking: 390-460 (99.2 - 117%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Ursaring @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 164 HP / 252 Atk / 92 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Facade
- Shadow Claw
- Earthquake
- Bulk Up / Swords Dance / Seed Bomb

The entire point of this mon is to come in on a Xatu using Toxic or Night Shade, and subsequently pick up an easy kill thanks to its actually pretty damn good coverage between Facade, Earthquake, and Shadow Claw. The boosting move is up to you, with Bulk Up letting you set up on Rhydon, and become a tad harder for stuff to revenge you, and Swords Dance doing stupid damage. Seed Bomb is also an option last slot to hit Rhydon for significantly harder, but it doesn't OHKO. Again, be wary of Rotom, as it forces you to actually predict, rather than spamming Facade / EQ. Speed is for Vaporeon.

Relevant Calc:
+1 252+ Atk Guts Ursaring Facade (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: 381-448 (96.7 - 113.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

I'll edit in replays once I get off my ass and get them.

Dustox @ Black Sludge
Ability: Shield Dust
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Bug Buzz
- Iron Defense / Energy Ball
- Quiver Dance
- Roost

So, somehow this actually gets a fair few wins in tests, its def not nearly as good as Raichu, but hey, its a functional win condition, and is immune to toxic, which is really useful on the kinda Iron Defense / Calm Mind archetype of mon. Basically, set up whichever boosting move is relevant to the current foe in, and hope you have enough PP to win the game. Shield Dust makes you immune to scald, which is also a plus. Energy Ball is an option over Iron Defense, as it means you can actually win if they have a Rhydon / Diancie, which is a nice change, but does leave you with issues where you need to boost your Def. Aim to set up on stuff like Sceptile, and if you're able to keep SR off the field, its actually a really fun answer to Scept / Non-Sleep Powder Plume.

Did you say E ranks? My fav owo

Jynx @ Choice Specs
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest / Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball

It's like Ice Cream but has some neat pros. Focus Blast OHKO's bulky incin after rocks and blows back all other Steel / Normal Types, secondary stab to blow back Hariyama and 2HKO's Slowbro and Delphox with Shadow Ball. Dry Skin to switch into water types and more speed can come in handy too. Good I swear.

Eelektross @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Coil
- Rest / Sub
- Drain Punch / Fire Punch
- Thunder Punch

Cool win con that can actually win matches after some team support and check flying types. 0 Weaknesses so you can switch into Rhydon / Steelix too and sponges most special attacks with its investment.

Dugtrio @ Life Orb
Ability: Sand Veil
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Sucker Punch
- Toxic / Pursuit

Ace speed tier and good power while toxic cripples dumb walls added with priority sucker punch. pursuit is an option to trap frail things like Delphox, Rotom and Heliolisk.

Golurk @ Rindo Berry
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Shadow Punch
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch

Beats Xatu, has just enough power to beat bulky slowbro and can punish grass/flying types with rindo ice punch which gives it a niche over Palossand. uwu

Skuntank @ Choice Band
Ability: Aftermath
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Poison Jab
- Crunch
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit

Underrated trapper, it might be slower than Sneasel but has more bulk and a better defensive typing for trapping and hits fairy types. Free to soak up toxic spikes and crunch hits z Slowbro harder than knock off Sneasel. There's a bunch of things it can trap. :o

Electivire @ Groundium Z
Ability: Motor Drive
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Power-Up Punch
- Wild Charge
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch

Nice attack, an electric immunity and a funky movepool. Click PUP when they switch into their 'counter' and unleash havoc with a +1 Groundium Z to OHKO Steelix, Rhydon and Diancie. Evire has perfect coverage to hit the tier for neutral damage at worst so balance struggles.

Noctowl @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Tinted Lens
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Work Up
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Tailwind

Good niche mon and any set with Noctowl is probably good but I just chose this one. Tinted Lens gives you almost perfect coverage with just one move outside of Toge so Owl can destroy things. Work Up Gives you a bit more muscle power for bulkier teams and Tailwind gives you an option to outspeed and sweep the rest of their team with the benefit of supporting its teammates alongside.

Crabominable @ Choice Band
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 64 HP / 252 Atk / 192 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Drain Punch
- Ice Hammer
- Thunder Punch

Another dumb wallbreaker with 0 switch ins and thankfully it's not weak to rocks unlike all the other Ice types. Even resisted hits on things like Sp def Vileplume / Comfey / Vikavolt will do a tonne of damage.

Ludicolo @ Metronome
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Ice Beam
- Surf
- Substitute

Unresisted coverage, metronome screws up fat teams and beats +6 blockbro, good speed tier (gets the jump on roar and most xatus). Just an interesting alternative for a water resist.

Archeops
Ability: Defeatist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Acrobatics
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Roost

Flying stab is absolutely busted and acro + u-turn always deal good chip to its supposed switch-ins. Outspeeds broken mon heliolisk and takes advantage of teams with rocker torterra (maybe not so much since tt hype has cooled down but eh).

Muk @ Black Sludge
Ability: Sticky Hold
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Poison Jab
- Sleep Talk
- Rest

Pair with a Pursuit trapper and Ground check and watch this thing use a lot of common stuff (Sceptile, Whimsicott, Alolan Eggy, Comfey, Heliolisk etc.) as set-up fodder.

+6 252+ SpA Comfey Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Muk: 152-179 (36.7 - 43.2%) -- 99% chance to 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery
(HP Ground 2HKOes but I'm pretty sure that's not a set; Muk easily 2HKOes back)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Exeggutor-Alola Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Muk: 246-289 (59.4 - 69.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
(easy rest bait)

252 SpA Choice Specs Whimsicott Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Muk: 150-178 (36.2 - 42.9%) -- 97.7% chance to 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery

This is the ancient set that everyone used during the Emboar test last November (no, not last month, the one from 2017). Z+V invented it, and I almost got reqs with it. Not sure how good it would be now, I would have to do some testing with it, but it is definitely one of my favorite niche Pokemon in NU. Quick Attack is generally the best priority move to use as it hits Heliolisk, but if you really need to touch Rotom Aqua Jet is an option as well. Also, Passimian doesn't die to +4 Quick Attack as expected, so that definitely makes Bibarel worse than before (Passimian wasn't common back then). However, the increased usage of Incineroar and AV Slowbro definitely helps it out.
@ Leftovers
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP / 228 Def / 28 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

Here's my signature Pokemon apparently. I nommed this Pokemon on the old VR simply for the niche that it shut down VoltTurn. While Vileplume can also do that, Vileplume doesn't have access to the key utility move in Stealth Rock, as well as the paralyzing move Discharge. Not to mention, Static will always paralyze, rather than sleep or the bad one, poison. Stunfisk isn't really that viable but if you really want a fun Stealth Rock user that beats Passimian, Heliolisk, and Xatu, Stunfisk is your mon. Courtesy of Chokepic who originally recommended me to use this beautiful Pokemon.

Discount ORAS Swellow pretty much. Has a very cool hit and run playstyle where you just send this in and either bop stuff with boomburst or u-turn away. It plays differently from the other offensive burds (brav and oricorio mainly) because its more focused on making holes on the opposing team instead of sweeping, and is actually surprisingly scary now that more people are moving onto offensive diancie instead of the sdef version.

Surprisingly fun to use. Lacks access to Sleep Powder like Vivillon or, well, Lilligant but pays off by being harder to kill due to better bulk and Strength Sap (you are actually able to get past Incineroar just by virtue of making him kill himself with recoil). Z-Hyper Beam gives you a one time nuke against poison, bug and flying-types.

This performs really well against bulky teams which don't usually have a way to KO it. It can set up in passimian, steelix, choice locked exeggutor-a, sceptile and sneasel to name a few mons. It doesn't need to get an sd up in order to sweep due to its ability, moxie and it's decent speed tier of 85. On the other hand, mold breaker let you break stall, and let you kill steelix when it's at full and to hit Rotom. Really underrated mon in the current meta imo.

Being able to defog rocks and dealing with legit all the rockers of the metagame is amazing. The bulk that swanna have it's typing and movesets makes it an amazing option for BO/balance teams if you are looking for a hazard control that is different from the classic ones and it also adds a bulky water to your team.

Here i'll drop some calcs that i think are important.
