Obstagoon is a ferocious wallbreaker available to Dark teams thanks to great physical movepool backed up by its great speed and Guts. Facade is an ideal move for it as its a good STAB move that doubles in power through Guts triggering, making it very threatening against the likes of Mandibuzz and Seismitoad. Knock Off permits it to remove items from bulky foes such as Corviknight and Toxapex in order to break them down effectively, as well as threaten Ghost- and Psychic-types like Galarian Corsola and Bronzong. Gunk Shot is great for taking on Grass- and Fairy-types such as Appletun and Clefable. Obstruct protects Obstagoon for the turn in order for its Flame Orb to activate and use Guts, and can also threaten slower, physical attackers immediately if it's struck with a contact move due to its defense lowering properties. Maximum Attack and Speed investment coupled with a Jolly nature allows it to hit as hard and as fast as possible.

Dark teams appreciate Obstagoon's wallbreaking prowess. Defensive teammates in Mandibuzz and Tyranitar use their defensive synergy to support its power. The former uses its pivoting through U-turn to create situations where Obstagoon can punish its foes, while the latter provides Stealth Rock and Thunder Wave support that would bring its foes in range of its devastating attacks. Additionally, their high defensive capabilities make them reliable switch-ins to Obstagoon's various checks, such as Barraskewda and Dragapult respectively. Sableye is a Fighting-type immunity that also provides it with a means of disrupting foes through a combination of Prankster, Taunt, and Will-O-Wisp, permitting it to take on foes in Hippowdon and Toxapex much easier. Additional teammates like Bisharp, Crawdaunt, and Weavile utilize their raw power, setup moves, and priority to take on foes that Obstagoon can't with greater consistency and ease, such as Ferrothorn and Mandibuzz.
