move 4: Sleep Powder / Stun Spore
item: Eviolite
ability: Regenerator
nature: Modest

[SET COMMENTS]
Offensive Tangela is able to compress several roles thanks to its amazing natural physical bulk and Regenerator letting it reliably check the likes of Gurdurr and Thwackey and ability to provide incredible offensive pressure with its potent Leaf Storm and an expansive utility movepool. Knock Off into Leaf Storm nets KOs on neutral targets such as Hattrem, Gurdurr, and Electabuzz. Alternatively, Giga Drain provides Tangela with some recovery and does not induce a Special Attack drop, but gives up immediate power. Sludge Bomb hits Grass-resistant Pokemon such as Thwackey and Vullaby and lets Tangela break past Clefairy. Lastly, Sleep Powder and Stun Spore cripple incoming switch-ins such as Golbat, Lampent, and Magmar. 176 Speed EVs lets Tangela outspeed Adamant Piloswine and Adamant Machoke.

Tangela should aim to use Knock Off and Sleep Powder or Stun Spore to cripple expected switch-ins during the early-game before breaking past foes with its STAB Leaf Storm. Since Tangela lacks the coverage to deal with Steel-types, Fire- and Fighting-types like Magmar, Raboot, and Gurdurr make for great partners. Tangela struggles against Gastly and Ivysaur, and sun teams in general, so Pokemon that can pressure these threats, such as Golbat and Drakloak, make for good teammates. Special walls like Klang, Marshtomp, and Galarian Corsola help mitigate Tangela's weakness to special attackers such as Lampent and Galarian Mr. Mime. Entry hazards from Piloswine, Roselia, and Mareanie also help to wear down foes into Tangela's KO range. Tangela often struggles to make progress until Golbat has been removed, so pairing Tangela with Pokemon that can pressure it, such as Electabuzz and Galarian Mr. Mime, is essential.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Tangela can opt for Special Defense investment to reliably check strong Volt Switch users like Electabuzz and Klang, but this makes it less of a blanket check to physical attacks. Tangela can also function as setup sweeper outside of sun teams with Substitute and Growth, but this requires it to give up important coverage in Sludge Bomb or utility in Knock Off and is ineffective against the common Infiltrator Golbat. Thief is an alternative to Knock Off when Tangela is the main switch-in to Knock Off and lets Tangela steal an Evolite from a foe.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Vullaby and Ferroseed are capable of taking multiple hits from Tangela and immune to its Stun Spore and Sleep Powder.

**Poison-types**: Tangela has little in its movepool to deter Roselia, Koffing, and Golbat and must rely on Knock Off and status moves to punish them. Their attacks force out Tangela, and Koffing's Neutralizing Gas also prevents recovery from Regenerator. It should be noted that Koffing's poor special bulk means it must be wary of switching in multiple times.

**Fire-types**: Fire Blast from Magmar, Lampent, and Combusken obliterates Tangela and prevents sun sets from sweeping, provided Tangela has not yet used Growth.

**Special Attackers**: Even with its Eviolite and HP investment, Tangela's special bulk is very poor, and it should avoid staying in on special attackers like Galarian Mr. Mime and Drakloak.

**Rufflet**: Rufflet is a physical wallbreaker that OHKOes Tangela or uses Tangela's defensives sets as setup fodder. Substitute Rufflet can also block Sleep Powder and Stun Spore.

Offensive Tangela is able to compress several roles, (RC) thanks to its amazing natural physical bulk and Regenerator letting it reliably check the likes of Gurdurr and Thwackey, while providing incredible offensive pressure with its base 100 Special Attack backed by (Fluff; stats don't need a mention bar Speed; this sentence was getting too long anyways) the potent Leaf Storm and an expansive utility movepool. Knock Off into Leaf Storm nets KOes on even neutral targets such as Hattrem, Gurdurr, and Electabuzz. Alternatively, Giga Drain provides Tangela with some recovery and does not induce a Special Attack drop, but gives up immediate power. Sludge Bomb hits Grass-resistant Pokemon such as Thwackey and Vullaby, and lets Tangela break past Clefairy. Knock Off weakens opposing Pokemon and supports Tangela's role as a stallbreaker (Fluff; you mention the pros of Knock Off into Leaf Storm, and that is enough explanation for a move so relevant in NFE) Lastly, Sleep Powder and Stun Spore are used to cripple incoming switch-ins such as Golbat, Koffing, and Magmar. 176 Speed EVs lets Tangela outspeed Adamant Piloswine and Adamant Machoke.

Wallbreakers with access to Knock Off such as Thwackey, Pikachu, and the aforementioned Gurdurr, can help to weaken physical walls such as Machoke and opposing Tangela (Knock Off support isn't that relevant for Tangela when it's spreading Knock itself against p much everything, including the two walls you mentioned. Instead, I'd mention teammates like Golbat and Drakloak that pressure Ivysaur and Gastly; maybe even stress the unfortunate sun matchup where this set can't do much versus, especially when no where else in this section addresses it). Special walls like Klang, Marshtomp, and Galarian Corsola help by mitigating Tangela's weakness to special attackers such as Kadabra, Lampent, and Galarian Mr. Mime. Entry hazards from Piloswine, Roselia, and Mareanie, (RC) also help to wear down foes into Tangela's KO range.

Would mention that Koffing is unable to comfortably take Leaf Storm from Tangela after losing its knock off (64-75.3%) and should be wary of switching in multiple times

**Fire-types**: Fire Blast from Lampent, Magmar, and Combusken obliterates Tangela, and can prevent sun sets from sweeping, provided Tangela has not yet used Growth. Magmar is able to take on even Growth boosted Tangela if kept healthy (as is Lampent albeit on a 50% roll). Might be worth rewording to "although lamp and busk have to be careful of growth boosted sun sets" or something

**Special Attackers**: Even with its Eviolite and HP investment, Tangela’s special bulk is very poor and should avoid staying in on special attackers like Kadabra, Galarian Mr. Mime, and Drakloak.
