SS OU OG Sun Team (Gen 1 mons only)

Hello! I have really only taken Pokemon seriously in Gen 4 and Gen 6. Haven't touched the game really since then, so I've been out of the loop. I mostly used Sand, Stall, and Baton pass teams. Coming back I didn't know which route to go in, but was like... how about I just start with Charizard since he's my favorite Pokemon, and I've never ran a sun team before so this should be fun. As for using gen 1 only pokemon... idk why I did this to myself, but let's try and make this work! So, lt's get into it!

Ninetales @ Heat Rock
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split
- Solar Beam
- Weather Ball

I mean... I didn't have many options for sun users when using Gen 1 only, but Ninetails isn't so bad. I went with this WoW Split set to keep ninetails around a bit longer. Not much else to say here, but this set has been doing well for me.

Blastoise @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Scald
- Flip Turn
- Life Dew

I was looking for a spinner, and immediately thought of Blastoise ONLY so I could keep the 3 starters together lol. I'm very unclear as to which set I should use for this mon, so any advice is greatly appreciated . I tried running shell smash set, but when sun is up it just... won't sweep. So I went for a set that allow for easy switch ins and survivability. Assault vest could be an option here too, but I've never used Blastoise before so I have no idea what I'm doing here.

Charizard @ Choice Specs
Ability: Solar Power
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Scorching Sands
- Solar Beam
- Overheat

I meannnnn what sun team doesn't run Charizard? (The whole point I made this team). I was running weather ball, and might switch back, but there were so many cases when going against sand teams and I didn't have sun up, and was forced to overheat and switch when I would have been fine with flamethrower. (I could be wrong on this set though).
Specs Zard is just a beast though, and I love him <3

Venusaur @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Growth
- Earth Power
- Weather Ball
- Giga Drain

You MIGHT see sun teams without zard, but I don't think you'll ever see a sun team without this monster. Not much to say here. Pretty standard, and for good reason.

Zapdos @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Static
EVs: 248 HP / 220 Def / 40 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Discharge
- Weather Ball
- Roost
- Defog

I'm iffy as to which set to go for here, but I put zapdos in to help deal with rain teams, and as my defog user.

Chansey (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Seismic Toss
- Soft-Boiled
- Teleport

Chansey felt like the obvious choice for my last slot. Allows for good switch ins with teleport, and checks a lot of pokemon. Considering putting in t-wave or toxic over teleport, but not sure yet.

There are still several good Gen 1 mon that could be used here, so any and all advice is much appreciated. I'm extremely new, so I apologize if this post isn't the most official, but I'm trying lol. Thank you for your time and I look forward to reading your feedback!

Hello Blind5pot, I do hope you're having a nice day. I have been using this team on the ladder and I'm sorry to say I haven't had much success with it. I think this team lacks a distinguished goal in mind and, well, not to blow my own horn but I think I'm a fairly adept Gen 8 player so I don't really think I am the one at fault here. I have used this team extensively and I have come up with some suggestions that I think are an improvement.

First things first, I don't really like the color scheme of your team. I know this doesn't really change the competitive value of the team but I do like using something which is nice on the eyes. I would recommend switching Ninetails to Alola Ninetails to add some more color-depth. An Alola Ninetails set that you could use is the following:

ninetales-alola.png

Ninetales-Alola @ Light Clay
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Aurora Veil
- Freeze Dry
- Hail
- Hypnocis

Not only does this add some more color to your team, but you also get access to the move "Aurora Veil" which I think is very powerful.

My next suggestion is to add a ground type. Electric mons take a dump if they're facing you and I was left looking like a turd with a red face after I got danced upon by Tapu Koko and Raichu. Boy, I got so angry during one game I almost physically screamed hahaha. Anyway, I think you should use Landorus Therian over Blastoise. I LOVEEEE Landorus Therian, he's a good good boy and he's so fierce and scary raaa!! I personally like using Defog on my Landorus Therian, I have a set that you can use here that I borrowed from the Smogdex.

Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Defog

I think with these two changes your team would look right as rain on a foggy morning. I hope this helps, thanks for the awesome team creation and thanks for sharing this with us. Salut!

Objection! Removing Sun makes Charizard and Venusaur obsolete. At least suggest replacements for them, or mention their abilities could be changed and Growth, Solar Beam, and Zapdos’s Weather Ball removed. Furthermore, adding Lando-T does mess up the “all Kanto mons” theme; however, TA doesn’t usually deal with self-imposed restrictions, so that’s fine. Still, you did change the entire focus of the team from Sun to Alolatales BO/Balance without correcting the other members to fit this. Side note, Blissey outclasses Chansey in gen 8; I understand this is for sake of the concept, but you did come here for competitive advice.

I’m not sure if SD Lando is the best set for this but I’m not really experienced enough in OU to give advice on that front.
