Quality Control Ogerpon-W (QC 1/2)

[SET]
Ogerpon-Wellspring (F) @ Wellspring Mask
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 120 HP / 136 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ivy Cudgel
- Power Whip / Horn Leech / Play Rough / Encore
- Follow Me
- Spiky Shield

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Ivy Cudgel is a strong STAB option, which deals strong damage into the majority of the meta-game, and allows Ogerpon-W to hit common targets including Landorus, Diancie, Incineroar and Chi-Yu super-effectively.
  • Power Whip is a strong Grass-type STAB move, threatening potential OHKOs on Ursaluna and Diancie. Horn Leech is a solid Grass-type STAB option, allowing Ogerpon-W to recuperate its health, which is useful in maintaining Ogerpon-W’s longevity.
  • Alternatively, Ogerpon-W can run Play Rough to enable it to OHKO Roaring Moon who otherwise resists Ogerpon-W's STAB coverage. Encore is a disruptive option that can be used to facilitate setup opportunities for Ogerpon-W’s partners.
  • Follow Me allows Ogerpon-W to support its teammates by redirecting single target attacks from opposing Pokemon, including Earth Power from Landorus, as well as status moves such as Spore from Amoonguss.
  • Spiky Shield punishes a number of contact damaging attacks that may be directed into Ogerpon-W, breaking the Focus Sash of Pokemon like Chien Pao and and punishing attempted Breaking Swipe from Gouging Fire or Roaring Moon.
  • Maximum Speed EVs allows Ogerpon to at least speedtie the crowded 110 Speed tier with opposing Ogerpon forms, and outspeed Ninetales-A and non-Choice Scarf Chi-Yu. The bulk investment ensures that Ogerpon-W is not OHKOd by Tornadus' Bleakwind Storm, and the given Attack investment offers a favourable roll to OHKO Bulky Landorus.
  • Terastallization enables Ogerpon-W lose its weakness to Bleakwind Storm from Tornadus, Gunk Shot from Okidogi and Sludge Bomb from Landorus. This also allows it to take Fire-type attacks, in particular from Chi-Yu, and turns Assault Vest Kyurem's Freeze Dry from an OHKO to a favourable roll to not 2HKO. Additionally, an Intimdatated and Terastallized Ogerpon-W is able to OHKO Incineroar after Stealth Rock.
  • Ogerpon-W is a versatile offensive support option, useful on a number of team compositions. In particular, setup Pokemon, including Nasty Plot Gholdengo and Calm Mind Raging Bolt, appreciate Ogerpon-W’s Follow Me to redirect opposing attacks, facilitating opportunities to boost their stats. Ogerpon-W is also able to threaten Chi-Yu and Incineroar, who check Gholdengo, and Landorus, who checks both Gholdengo and Raging Bolt, with Ivy Cudgel.
  • Ogerpon-W struggles with common Grass- types like Rillaboom, Sinistcha, and Amoonguss, who resist Ogerpon-W's STAB coverage, and deal respectable damage in return, especially to Terastallized Ogerpon-W. Ogerpon-W also loses its immunity to Rage Powder and Spore when Terastallized. Partners like Tornadus and Chien-Pao offensively threaten these Grass-types while additionally supporting Ogerpon-W with speed control in Prankster Tailwind or bolstering Ogerpon-W's damage with Sword of Ruin respectively.
  • Dragon-types, including Raging Bolt and Kyurem, also both resist Ogerpon-W's offensive coverage, and deal significant damage in return. Breaking Swipe from Roaring Moon and Gouging Fire bypasses Ogerpon-W's ability to redirect damage, and also lower Ogerpon-W's Attack. Iron Hands threatens significant damage to Ogerpon-W, particularly when Terastallized. Roaring Moon is a solid partner that can offer fast Tailwind support and coverage for opposing Dragon-types and physical attackers including Iron Hands and Rillaboom.

Ready for QC, apologies for the delay. EV Spread has been set to max Attack / Speed, but very happy to change if someone has an appropriate replacement.

  • Ivy Cudgel is a strong STAB option, which deals strong damage into the majority of the meta-game, and allows Ogerpon-W to hit common targets including Landorus, Diancie, Incineroar and Chi-Yu super-effectively.
  • Horn Leech is a solid Grass-type STAB option, allowing Ogerpon-W to recuperate its health, which is useful in maintaining Ogerpon-W’s longevity. Wood Hammer is a more powerful Grass-type move, at the expense of recoil damage. Would like to see mention of what KOes wood hammer picks up that horn leech does not, ursaluna? diancie? etc
  • Follow Me is a strong redirection option through which Ogerpon-W can support its teammates, with its strong defensive typing allowing it to redirecting status moves, including Amoonguss’ Spore, and threatening damaging attacks, with Water Absorb allowing Ogerpon-W to heal from opposing Water-type attacks, in particular, Ivy Cudgel from opposing Ogerpon-W. This probably needs reworded, it reads pretty awkwardly. I think you can word it something along the lines of "Follow Me allows Ogerpon-W to support its teammates by redirecting single target attacks from opposing Pokemon, as well as status moves like Spore from Amoonguss." and then go into the water absorb point.
  • Spiky Shield punishes a number of contact damaging attacks that may be directed into Ogerpon-W.
  • Terastallization grants Ogerpon-W a +1 boost to its Special Defense, losing its weakness to Bleakwind Storm from Tornadus, Sludge Bomb from Landorus, and allows it to take Fire-type attacks, from Chi-Yu and Ogerpon-H, and from Snow teams much more readily. Can include mention of calcs here that the spdef boost allows ogerpon to live.
  • Ogerpon-W is a versatile offensive support option and is useful on a number of archetypes. Ogerpon-W benefits from Tornadus’ access to Prankster Tailwind, as well as Bleakwind Storm which can super-effectively damage Grass-types like Rillaboom which Ogerpon-W struggles against. Setup Pokemon including Calm Mind Raging Bolt and Nasty Plot Gholdengo appreciate Ogerpon-W’s Follow Me to redirect opposing attacks and facilitating opportunities to boost their stats. I would like to see some expansion on what pokemon truly threaten wellspring, as well as partners for ogerpon as this doesnt really capture its defining place in the metagame.

  • Add a point here introducing ogerpon wellspring, something like Ogerpon-W is a centralizing redirector and offensive piece in the metagame... (you can word it how you wish just a point before you dig into the set itself)
  • Follow Me allows Ogerpon-W to support its teammates by redirecting single target attacks from opposing Pokemon, as well as status moves like Spore from Amoonguss, with Water Absorb allowing Ogerpon-W to heal from opposing Water-type attacks, in particular, Ivy Cudgel from opposing Ogerpon-W. This looks better
  • Spiky Shield punishes a number of contact damaging attacks that may be directed into Ogerpon-W. Mention here how spiky shield is useful to break focus sashes from pokemon like Chien pao
  • Maximum Speed EVs allows Ogerpon to at least speedtie the crowded 110 Speed tier with opposing Ogerpon forms, and outspeed Ninetales-A and non-Choice Scarfed Chi-Yu. 120 HPs The bulk investment ensures that Ogerpon-W is not OHKOd by Tornadus' Bleakwind Storm. (add period) , and 136 The given Attack investment offers a favourable roll to OHKO Bulky Landorus, and allows an Intimdatated and Terastallized Ogerpon-W to OHKO Incineroar after Stealth Rock.
  • Terastallization grants Ogerpon-W a +1 boost to its Special Defense, as well as losing its weakness to Bleakwind Storm from Tornadus, Gunk Shot from Okidogi, Sludge Bomb from Landorus. This also allows it to take Fire-type attacks, in particular from Chi-Yu, and turns AV Kyurem's Freeze Dry from an OHKO to a favourable roll to not 2HKO.
  • Ogerpon-W is a versatile offensive support option, useful on a number of. I think you forgot to finish your sentence here, but useful number of team compositions makes sense. In particular, setup Pokemon including Calm Mind Raging Bolt and Nasty Plot Gholdengo appreciate Ogerpon-W’s Follow Me to redirect opposing attacks, facilitating opportunities to boost their stats. Ogerpon-W benefits from Tornadus’ access to Prankster Tailwind, as well as Bleakwind Storm which can super-effectively damage Grass-types like Rillaboom and Sinistcha which Ogerpon-W struggles against. add roaring moon here as a common partner alternatively to tornadus, and Chien pao to increase ogerpons offensive pressure and threaten the aforementioned grass types
  • Common Checks to Ogerpon-W include Dragon-types including Raging Bolt and Kyurem also both resist Ogerpon's STABs, and deal significant damage. Breaking Swipe from Roaring Moon and Gouging Fire bypasses Ogerpon's ability to redirect damage, and also lower Ogerpon's Attack. Make this a new point since you are switching from partners to checks to ogerpon. I would like to see mention of amoonguss and iron hands as threats/checks to wellspring.

good work so far, biggest thing is that there's a distinct lack of emphasis on Landorus even though checking Lando is one of Ogerpon's most important roles in the meta

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Ogerpon-W is a centralising offensive piece in the metagame, both offering redirection to multiple archetypes, whilst also threatening significant damage with its STAB coverage.
(would like a few notable calcs for wood hammer vs horn leech here)
  • Follow Me allows Ogerpon-W to support its teammates by redirecting single target attacks from opposing Pokemon, as well as status moves like Spore from Amoonguss, with Water Absorb allowing Ogerpon-W to heal from opposing Water-type attacks, in particular, Ivy Cudgel from opposing Ogerpon-W. (this is just dex info, you don't need to mention it here. would appreciate a bit more elaboration here, for example— what mons is it redirecting attacks from?)
  • Spiky Shield punishes a number of contact damaging attacks that may be directed into Ogerpon-W, breaking the Focus Sash of Pokemon like Chien Pao and punishing attempted Breaking Swipe from Gouging Fire or Roaring Moon (you can exclude this if you don't think it's significant enough to mention).
  • Maximum Speed EVs allows Ogerpon to at least speed tie the crowded 110 Speed tier with opposing Ogerpon forms, and outspeed Ninetales-A, and non-Choice Scarf Chi-Yu, and Landorus (i honestly think Landorus is probably worth elaborating on as it's basically the main reason Oger's speed tier is so valuable— you don't really spell out anywhere that Ogerpon-W beats Landorus, and that's a huge reason why it's so good. you don't necessarily need to address Landorus right here but there should definitely be a stronger emphasis on it multiple places in the analysis). The bulk investment ensures that Ogerpon-W is not OHKOd by Tornadus' Bleakwind Storm, and the given Attack investment offers a favourable roll to OHKO Bulky Landorus, and allows an Intimdatated and Terastallized Ogerpon-W to OHKO Incineroar after Stealth Rock.
  • Terastallization grants Ogerpon-W a +1 boost to its Special Defense, (you don't need to mention this, rephrase the rest of the sentance as needed) as well as losing its weakness to Bleakwind Storm from Tornadus, Gunk Shot from Okidogi and Sludge Bomb from Landorus. This also allows it to take Fire-type attacks, in particular from Chi-Yu, and turns Assault Vest Kyurem's Freeze Dry from an OHKO to a favourable roll to not 2HKO. (mention a few offensive calcs you hit with Tera as well— i think picking up the OHKO on stuff like really fat Landorus, good rolls into hearthflame, etc are all valid)
  • Ogerpon-W is a versatile offensive support option, useful on a number of team compositions. In particular, setup Pokemon including Calm Mind Raging Bolt and Nasty Plot Gholdengo appreciate Ogerpon-W’s Follow Me to redirect opposing attacks (worth mentioning its offensive utility into Lando & Incin, the primary checks to those mons), facilitating opportunities to boost their stats. Ogerpon-W benefits from Tornadus’ access to Prankster Tailwind, as well as Bleakwind Storm which can super-effectively damage opposing Grass-types which Ogerpon-W struggles against. Alternatively, Roaring Moon is a solid partner that can offer fast Tailwind support and coverage for opposing Dragon-types. Ogerpon-W offers redirection to Chien-Pao who both bolsters Ogerpon-W's offensive output with Sword of Ruin, and also threaten opposing Grass- and Dragon-types who otherwise resist Ogerpon-W's offensive coverage. (address Oger's ability to hit Incin for Pao)
  • Grass-types like Rillaboom, Sinistcha and Amoonguss resist Ogerpon-W's STAB coverage, and deal respectable damage in return, especially to Terastallized Ogerpon. Ogerpon-W also loses its immunity to Rage Powder and Spore when Terastallized. Dragon-types, including Raging Bolt and Kyurem, also both resist Ogerpon-W's offensive coverage, and deal significant damage in return. Breaking Swipe from Roaring Moon and Gouging Fire bypasses Ogerpon-W's ability to redirect damage, and also lower Ogerpon-W's Attack. Iron Hands threatens significant damage to Ogerpon-W, particularly when Terastallized.

Posting what I shared on discord to have it all in the thread, for the record
Moveset:
Horn Leech / Wood Hammer -> Power Whip / Horn Leech / Play Rough / Encore

Horn Leech/Wood Hammer bullet point:
We're swapping Wood Hammer for Power Whip, also make Power whip the primary over Horn Leech. As such, Horn Leech is compared to Power Whip by being more reliable and offering a little recovery. Wood Hammer can be presented here as an alternative to Power Whip that trades the lower accuracy for recoil if you want.

New bullet point about alt moves in that slot (Play Rough, Encore as a priority):
Something to the effect of: "Grass STAB can be dropped in favour of some alternative options to serve the team's needs. Play Rough allows Ogerpon-W to OHKO Roaring Moon, while Encore offers a disruptive option that can create setup opportunities for Ogerpon-W's partners"

Bullet point starting "Ogerpon-W is a versatile offensive support option [...]":
Bolt and Ghold as setup mons to support are great choices to mention, just add the detail of wellspring being able to offensively threaten Landorus for them both, as well as Incin and Chi-Yu specifically for Ghold. After that this point goes on to talk about partners that cover wellspring's weaknesses. I think these would be better placed in the next bullet point. Keeping this one focused on what ogerpon does for its partners, rather than what the partners can do for ogerpon which fits a little better along side the common checks.

Bullet point starting "Grass-types like Rillaboom, Sinistcha and Amoonguss resist Ogerpon-W's STAB coverage [...]":
It's a little bit of work to restructure/write this bit, but I think it reads better as something like"Ogerpon-W struggles with common Grass-types like Rillaboom, Sinistcha, and Amoonguss [...]. Partners like Tornadus and Chien-Pao offensively threaten these Grass-types while additionally supporting Ogerpon-W with speed control in Prankster Tailwind or bolstering Ogerpon-W's damage with Sword of Ruin." Then something similar for the dragons.

Implementation's good, QC 2/3
