Old Dogs Play Old Tricks

Hi Smogon! I've benn playing for a while in competitive Pokémon, becoming a very good player (1600+ on PO) back there in BW2. While I was testing the new Pokémon in here, I realized that not too many of them were as good as previous gens Pokémon, so I decided to make a team with some old dogs that highly aprreciated the new meta.

I´ve always liked to play sand on BW2, so I decided to stay almos the same because now it seems to be easier to play with this style thanks to the weather nerf. So practically you can say this is an evolution from a previous team (The Arabian Nights).

I hope you like the team ans test it, as it functions very well in this new meta.

TEAMBUILDING PROCESS

Tyranitar. He's been in every team I've made since GSC. I must say that he is my favourite Pokémon. Even though a MegaTar was tempting, I decided to let him in his usal spot on my teams: a very good Special Wall. I slapped him an assault vest and AV-Tar really made wonders.

Tyranitar is really bulky on the special side, but he has many a plethora of weaknesses. Gliscor and Slowbro were great partners for him as they covered practically all of them and helped me stalling some new menaces like Mega Khan and Dragon types.

I needed some offensive presence, so I added Scizor to the team as a Mega. Mandibuzz became an anti-stall Pokémon pairing well with Gliscor giving an end to the annoying Chansey if my Scizor went down. She also became my defogger and Aegislash counter.

Now I needed to hit hard on the Special side, Specs Heliolisk seemed nice and play nice as well. He was a real jewel that mantained momentum, dealed with the ever present Rotom and pressured the enemy team with high powered coverage.

While Scizor was good, he was not pulling his wieght on the team. I´ve changed it fos Special Mega-Saur- Even though I didn´t had any physical attacker on the team this team worked really well in PrePokeBank and stayed the same for a while.

Finally came PokeBank, and with it many old threats rampaged the game. Genesect was the worst of them beacuase it had the power to destroy the team with his downloaded boosts. Along came Cresselia as another physical wall, she provided support and walling for the team, and Volcarona. I chose Volcarona (Bulky Version) instead of Heatran because I´m not running a cleric and he will eventually come down to repeated attacks or worse: Dugtrio. Volcarona (In my opinion) made a better counter, as she was able to burn him on the U-turn, making Genesect rather useless if his pal Dugtrio was around.

THE TEAM

gliscor_by_macuarrorro-d4w2gui.jpg

Lust (Gliscor) (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 248 Def / 16 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Substitute
- Protect

He is my premiere staller. With Toxic, Protect and Substitute he can have 322 turns of pure stall. He checks Heatran and can PP stall defensive Rotom. He also cripples many Setup Sweepers that Cresselia can really hit. Earthquake is my STAB move, hiting rather nicely and adding up some damage or killing something in order to not waste another sub or protect. He also helps me by taking care of Mega-Wile Charizard X and Bisharp who are very troublesome Pokémon if not prepared properly.

While using Gliscor, taking notice of Speed is important. If you're behind a Sub, you can Scout the Speed of the enemy by doing an attack, then you can decide to stay in and wait for a miss in Hydro Pump (in defensive Rotom case), outplaying the enemy or just simply running away. He gives me information on the enemy and traps them in a malicious poison.

Gliscor is also perfect por mindgames. I ocasionally throw up a Sub in the Protect turn when stalling something slower, this is beacause the will try to break the sub with the slow Pokémon and then bring a faster Pokémon that can threaten Gliscor. If the oponent switches you get a free sub from where poison the enemy, if it stays you only lose 12.5% of HP, nothing as bad as having to retreat.

Tease (Mandibuzz) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 120 Def / 140 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Foul Play
- Defog
- Taunt
- Roost

Mandibuzz is my stall breaker, utility counter and anti-hazard. Running 140 Spd sounds kinda rare, but they have a good point: Outspeeding Defensive Gliscor. This way I can taunt him and "phaze" him as he can't really touch me. Meanwhile I'll Defog the area in case there are hazards, or I'll just simply Foul Play or Roost depending on Mandibuzz' HP.

Mandibuzz is great this gen as she can handle many threats as Aegislash nor any other Physical Pokémon can setup in front of her. It's also great at stoping Clerical Support as she is fast enough to Taunt plenty of walls.

The synergy comes great with Cresselia as she can't take Ghost types attacks very well. Also is Gliscors partner in crime at breaking walls with a Poison + Taunt combo.

Cresselia (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 SpA
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Moonlight
- Reflect/Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Thunder Wave/Toxic

Cresselia may be an odd Pokémon since last gen but she is a great addition to the team. Many stall teams now need a hard counter to both Mega Pinsir and Charizard X/Y because you won't know what you will be facing. Cresselia is an answer to those Pokémon.

Cresselia can switch into Mega-Sir and Zard X when they attempt a setup, then you proceed to T-Wave them. Now you can choose to recover or attempt to hit. I prefer to Recover/Reflect for some staying power. Right now I'm testing between T-Wave and Toxic. Toxic makes the set less reliable on teammates to take down on enemies, but Pokémon like Charizard Y are better dealed with a teammate so I won't wait several turns to take them down.

The Ev's in Sp Atk might seem rare, but the ensure that Mega-Sir will be OHKOE'D after some minor damage (Sandstorm, Switch In, Leech Seed) and does a 79-90 on defensive Gliscor, making it easy prey when it has taken some hits.

Venusaur.full.1586277.jpg

Behemoth (Venusaur) (M) @ Venusaurite
Trait: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SAtk
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Synthesis
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Leech Seed

Venusaur es a very interesting Pokémon on this Gen. It went from being the Stellar Sun Sweeper to The Stellar Stall Mega. Well I like to use it as a tank as it hits hard and can take plenty of hits. Leech seed grants him recovery and the lack of lefties, Giga Drain and Sludge Bomb are great moves. One can provide power and recovery and the other a pretty chance to poison (not badly) the foe. This is great as many Pokémon that switch on Venusaur are pivots and Toxic won't really hurt them that much (bar Steel types that wall the set).

Tyranitar aprreciates Leech Seed as he is running an AV set. This makes him get pseudo recovery and harras Chansey with Leech Seed + Sandstorm +Pursuit damage.

I've been thinking on running EQ and a slightly different spread to have something to hit Aegislash and Heatran but I'm not that sure.

Volcarona.full.895648.jpg

Soleil (Volcarona) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Flame Body
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Fiery Dance
- Roost

Volcarona is a great Pokémon too even though she is x4 weak to SR. This bulky spread makes sure you can take anything from Genesect when SR are out of the field, also you have a nice chance to burn it thanks to flame body. Quiver Dance and Bug Buzz are it's attaking moves, hitting quiete hard bar Heatran and Chansey (even though we can muscle through her if she lacks Toxic). Roost is for recovery so she can stay longer on the game and attempt to boost multiple tymes through the game.

Many times she surprise me. I didn't expected to see her sweeping, but when her counters are down she can plow through almost every kind of team.

tyranitar___stone_edge_by_ishmam-d6c63b8.png

Wrath (Tyranitar) (M) @ Assault Vest
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Crunch
- Pursuit
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge/Fire Blast

My favourite pokemon: Tyranitar. he is so badass tht he cante take Focus Blasts now. Just switch him into any special attacker and watch them, well, do nothing. As Tyranitar forces tons of switches Pursuit is ideal for him. Crunch is his main attacking move dealing decent damage to almos everything. In a pinch I can fish for a defense drop on something that can´t touch me and then pursuit the foe. Earthquake is to take down Heatran, but I must be wary of not getting burned so he can gets the kill. The last move I've been testing is Stone Edge over Fire Blast. Usually I prefer to run Fire Blast to get the edge over Ferrothorn and an unsuspecting Scizor, but with paralysis support Stone Edge is my main move to hit Charizard that can be troublesome to the team.

Venusaur greatly helps Tyranitar as the lack of lefties makes him vulnerable to Hazards and other kinds of minor damage that in a long battle can be a problem.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well thanks for reading the team. I know is a little heavy to read it all complete so thanks for checking the team. I'll be waiting for your rate and any suggestions to the team will be accepted. If you like the team, don't forget to throw a Luvdisk :) See ya!

You have some issues with mega pinsir. Even if you sacrifice a pokemon to deal with him, this still isn't largely effective. Putting Zapdos over Gliscor allows you to have a larger team player, and can let you shift defog on mandi to knock off. If you want to keep Mandi as the defogger, Zapdos can always run sub/toxic over Heat wave/Defog, essentially performing gliscor's job with a better counter to pinsir-mega and talonflame check.

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Calm Nature
- Defog / Substitute
- Roost
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave / Toxic

Edit: I had copied my Zapdos' name onto the set from my UU stall project... I'll remove that as it was just a note for my reference

The only other suggestion would be to consider going max physical bulk with tyranitar and allowing the assault vest to play by itself. This would give him a bit more bulk for checking talonflame and still lend him massive special sided bulk.

Thanks! I'll try it out and possibly edit the team in a few hours given I have any time.

Now that Gliscor will be gone, should I run a more defensive spread on Venasaur to check Mega-Tar better?

Ok, I'll work with it, maybe I'll just run some more attack evs for 2HKO'ing eviolite-less chansey?
