Hello, this is my second RMT. My first being a fun gimmick U-Turn team(which was fun and actually pretty cool). This Team is called “Old Team” because I have been using it for a while now and only make changes here and there.
It started about a year ago when I wanted to build the perfect OU team in my Platinum game. I started with my five favorite members and added and then took out the last member many times. I finally landed on the sixth and final member a little over 2 months ago and think this team is ready to be rated. Over the passing months this team has become more and more effective.. as you are about to see why.
The Team:
This is the Team. As you can see, it has gotten better over the months because two of this teams best counters are now gone. Latias and Salamence were amazing counters and the only way to beat them was with surprise, luck, or just better battling. Though I rarely lost to standard sets, it did take more effort than it should have to beat Salamence.. Latias was never scary, just hard to KO. Now with them gone this team can shine like never before. Dragonite will be covered later.
Closer Look:
Metagross @ Occa Berry
Clear Body
Adamant (atk+/satk-)
240 HP/248 Atk/12Def/8 Spe
-Meteor Mash
-Bullet Punch
-Earthquake
-Stealth Rock
Item: Occa in my opinion is the best item for Metagross. With it can beat Infernape and actually stay against Heatran. I have thought about using Lum Berry, but I don’t really see the logic in that. Just because some people use random leads like Breloom, Machamp or Roselia I won’t be taking Occa out. I’m more scared about Heatran, Azelf(because with Occa it’s a guaranteed win) and Dragonite.
EV’s:The evs are always simple.A lot of HP and Attack. I put 8 speed evs to be faster than all the 70 base speed Pokemon without little to no speed evs. The speed evs are actually really important if you look at my attacks. Earthquake is for opposing Metagross and it is critical to be faster there.
Attacks: I have always hated Explosion. And specially more so on a slow Pokemon with great defenses like Metagross. I’m not going to randomly blow it up hoping it survives the attack and they don’t predict it and switch into Gengar. With these three attack I can deal with any lead. I don’t have to switch out of any lead and mostly always set up the rocks and killed a Pokemon. My reaction to almost all leads is attack and when I see an obvious switch use the rocks. This is the best leading set for Mettagross. With these attacks, this Metagross can end up being way more useful than if it has explosion.. Basically many more options.
Additional Comments: Metagross is the best lead in my opinion. It can match any other lead thanks to3 attacks and great bulk. Plus it never hurts to have a priority move when your team is so slow.
Weakness:
Fire: Heatran,Gyarados and Blissey(special based Fire attacks)
Ground: Gyarados, Breloom and Celebi
Heatran @ Expert Belt
Flash Fire
Mild (satk+/def-)
4 Atk/252 Satk/252 spe
-Hidden Power [Grass]
-Earth Power
-Fire Blast
-Explosion/Dragon Pulse
Nature: Why not use a Speed increasing Nature? Mostly because I have always believed that speed is un-important in the game of Pokemon. You may be asking yourself “WTF??Speed is the most important factor in the game!!”. But in my opinion it is not. The most important part of the game is the typing superiority between Pokemon. Speed hardly matters if you have a good type match up. Plus the rest of my team fixes the speed demons a bit. Anyways, I chose Mild so Explosion can get a little boost. I also chose Mild over Hasty/Naïve because I wanted to take advantage of that HUGE special attack. Nothing likes takings Fire Blasts from this thing and even moreso if has a Flash Fire boost. Mild is used for a Blaziken-type of feel where it can KO it’s counters just with sheer force. Lastly, Mild over Rash any day of the week. Why? Because I will usually be switching into special attacks more often. Resisted Shadow Balls and unresisted Thunderbolts are the biggest concerns. Also when I switch into Scizor it will be on Bullet Punch anyways. And anything that can land a super effective hit on this thing will probably kill it anyway.
Item: This is my take on Heatran. The Expert Belt is to pretend it’s a Scarfed Heatran. I haven’t seen Scarf Heatran lately so this trick isn’t as useful as when I built the team. However it allows Hetran to stay alive longer if it’s only taking resisted attacks and entry damage. The special attack plus nature makes up for the lack in power compared to LO.
EV’s: Pretty simple really. Max speed to be faster than 236 and Breloom in general. Breloom is a problem because getting it paralyzed is hard…Max special attack will make the Fire Blast from this baby hurt..so will HP Grass on any Swanpert. The other 4 evs to attack because I like odd HP and to power up Explosion.
Attacks: I said I didn’t like explosion… Well I don’t but Heatran with Explosion is more usable than Metagross due to it being faster and not having anything better to put in there instead. Hidden Power Grass is for Swanpert…Yup just him. Fire Blast and Earth Power and standard. Also, due to my Dragon weakness Dragon Pulse is a possibility. However I usually just keep Explosion. Also a solution against Suicune.
Additional Comment: Heatran provides a Fire immunity which is absolutely amazing. With 3 of my teams weak to fire, I had to have an immunity. Heatran allows me to deal with steels pretty easily as well.
Weakness:
Ground: Celebi, Breloom and Gyarados
Fighting: Gyarados and Celebi
Water: Gyarados, Breloom, Celebi and Blissey(specially based Water attacks)
Celebi @ Life Orb
Natural Cure
Modest (Atk-/Satk+)
252HP/252 Satk/4Spe
-Leaf Storm
-Rest
-Thunder Wave
-Hidden Power [Fire]/Psychic
Nature: Going along with Heatran’s ability this is another slow but hard hitting Pokemon. I chose Modest to make the Leaf Storms and Hidden Powers hurt as much as possible. Not much to say about the nature.
Item: Life Orb makes the attack hurt even more. With Life Orb Tyranitar isn’t really a counter for this thing.. At all. Not even Specially defensive Scizor can switch into this thing. Life Orb really makes Celebi hard to switch into unless you have an immunity of 4x resist.Life Orb is also used for Suicune who will take massive damage from this.
EV’s: Max HP to be able to switch into resisted and boosted attacks pretty easily. This thing is hard to KO even without any defensive evs. This is my counter to Gyarados.. Though I will admit that I get screwed up by Substitute ones. Thanks to HP Fire I must rely on a speed tie against other 236’s…Though in the end they will most likely be at 237… Max special attack to make sure Leaf Storm and Hidden Power do enough damage to Tyranitar/Scizor/Gyarados.
Attacks: Leaf Storm is a given. Rest is used over Recover because I almost never heal, and if I do it means that I have a free turn.. Might as well heal fully and just switch out. Never have I ever wished I had Recover over Rest. Hidden Power and Psychic is a hard one. Currently using Hidden Power for Scizor due to the fact that the Dragons are rare. I used Psychic when Salamence was common.. Easy way to KO it. However one can run Psychic to beat substitute Gyarados. Heatran is taken care of with Thunder Wave since it will most likely be the attack I am using first. A slow Heatran is useless… Thunder Wave is to make sure my lazy Pokemon will be not be swept by random Infernape and Lucario switch ins. If I’m running Pyschic neither can switch in.
Additionl Comment: I chose this Celebi because I don’t want my Pokemon to be useless offensively and let others set up. I also don’t want to die in one hit either. Celebi’s resistance to Ground is very useful when two teammates are weak to it. He’s Fighting resistance allows me to have a pretty good answer to Fighters.. Breloom in general. Also Celebi hitting this hard is surprising.
Weakness:
Bug: Gyarados and Heatran,
Fire: Gyarados, Heatran and Blissey(special based Fire attacks)
Dark: Heatran and Breloom
Ice: Heatran, Metagross and Blissey(Special based Ice attacks)
Flying: Heatran, Metagross and Blissey(special based Flying attacks
Poison(lol): Heatran and Metagross
Ghost: Heatran and Blissey
Blissey @ Leftovers
Natural Cure
Bold(Def+/Atk-)
4HP/252Def/252SDef
-Thunder Wave
-Counter
-Seismic Toss
-Softboiled
Nature: Bold is to make sure Blissey survives as many physical hits as possible. Those extra points do matter.
Item: Doesn’t Blissey come with Leftovers? Well it’s really self explanatory really.
EV’s: This is a Counter Blissey with some changes, so you may ask why not put the rest of evs into hp? Well the answer is quite simple. This is my all around special wall. With this in my team I don’t have to worry about Gengar, Zapdos, Togekiss, Heatran and any other special attacker. My team really can breathe knowing the cutest Pokemon is here to protect them. Also I don’t see the point in adding all the evs into HP when it’s more likely that I will be switching this thing into special attackers. It survives what it needs to(weaker physical attacks).
Attacks: Counter is the star of this set. It is able to KO any Pursuiter, or any weak STAB in general. The surprise is what makes it good. KO’s Sampert, Metagross, Scizor(though run risk of getting outright KO’ed) and specially Tyranitar now that Choice Scarf has become so popular…Thunder Wave and Counter in the same set..? Yes, since I will not be using Counter against the things I Thunder Wave(Gengar etc etc). Plus it makes my team’s low speed not an issue. Softboiled is in here because Wish is gay. Some people might use it to great effect but not me. Also Wish and Counter are illegal together... not that it matters. Seismic Toss gives Blissey a way to hurt things…
Additional Comments: Blissey is amazing! I love her and want her to have my babies. She allows my team to have so much freedom! I can’t even begin to describe how amazing Blissey is as a Pokemon.
Weakness:
Fighting: Gyarados and Celebi
Gyarados @ Leftovers
Intimidate
Adamant (Atk+/Satk-)
156 HP/168 Def/184 Spe
-Dragon Dance
-Taunt
-Bounce
-Waterfall
Nature: Adamant is a great nature for Gyarados.. Obviously. I run no attack evs however which be explained there. Adamant gives his attack a little power without any dances to hurt the initial switch in somewhat.
Item: Leftovers will allow it to heal. This is good since it is a bulky Gyarados and it will be taking Stealth Rock damage whenever he comes in. So it helps in keeping him bulky.
EV’s : No attack evs with an attack boosting Nature. It gives it just enough attack to actually do some damage without making it less bulky. 168 Def so it can take physical attacks better, since I rely on Gyarados’ amazing list of resistances to not get royally raped by Infernape and others. The speed is there so after a dance it can.. well I don’t know what exactly it out speeds after a dance, but I do know what it out speeds before(no speed base 100). HP is to make it bulky like I said.
Attacks: Dragon Dance is there so that if I get a chance to boost his speed and attack for free I will take it. He however is really not meant for a straight out sweep, more like an opportunist. He will hurt a Pokemon, hopefully taking one out in the process. Taunt is for keeping Suicune in check(somewhat) as well as setting up on offensively weak Pokemon. Great move. Bounce is chosen here because this Gyarados is an opportunist not a sweeper, so good neutral damage is welcomed(better than Return since It does a lot against Celebi). Waterfall is the great STAB attack.
Additional Comments: Gyarados brings a Ground Immunty and Fire/Fighting Resist.. Which are welcomed. Gyarados typing is superb and allows me to have a WFG core that is pretty effective. Gyarados is good.
Weakness:
Electric: Celebi, Breloom and Blissey(Special Electric attacks)
Rock: Metagross and Breloom.
Breloom @ Toxic Orb
Poison Heal
Adamant (Atk+/Satk-)
12 HP/252 Atk/244Spe
-Mach Punch
-Spore
-Seed Bomb
-Substitute
Nature: Pretty standard really.. Needs as much attack as possible.
Item: Again, don’t Breloom come with Toxic Orbs?
EV’s: Max attack to make the Punches hurt even when resisted. Speed to make sure I can spore things..Like I said, standard Pokemon here.
Attacks: Mach Punch is used instead of Focus Punch because I need a Tyranitar counter first of all. Also need priority in this team. I know Focus Punch fits with Substitute, but just until recently I had Swords Dance instead of Substitute. So basically this Breloom is a mixture between those sets. The reason I have substitute here is because I do not want to be using Spore when I am also Thunder Wave-ing everything in sight. Also I do not want to put a wrong Pokemon to sleep.. why would I want Swampert sleeping? Basically Mach Punch gives me priority and Substitute + Spore give me a way to take out potentially problematic Pokemon. Seed Bomb is there to take out Swampert.
Additional Comments: Breloom was the last member of the team. I tested Hariyama, Machamp and Azumarril in this position. I found out I needed priority so I decided to add breloom because of his Ground and Rock resist at the same time. Thinking about taking out Substitute and adding Swords Dance again.. don‘t really know..
Weaknes:
Flying: Metagross and Blissey(special based Flying attacks)
Ice: Heatran, Metagross and Blissey(special based Ice attacks)
Psychic: Heatran, Celebi, Metagross and Blissey(special based Psychic attacks)
Fire: Gyarados, Heatran and Blissey(special based Fire attacks)
Poison(lol): Metagross and Heatran
That’s basically it. I’m not looking to change the team unless you see a major flaw that can be easily fixed without the need to change th Teams whole theme.. Which is bulky offense.
Threats:
"Why would you use those?":
Dragonite is my single worst fear.. Even when Salamence was here Dragonite was the thing that made me pray the opponent wouldn’t use him. Salamence was a joke actually.. Celebi destroyed it with Psychic.. I never really saw Salamence as a threat. Why? Because it was so fragile…well compared to this beast anyways. The typing is what hurts my team. Salamence was too fragile and really got 2 hitKO’ed by a couple of my Pokemon anyways…But Dragonite is a true beast. His bulkyness really is a b*tch to deal with every single time. Notice how I have not ONE Ice attack in this team. Ouch. At least Paralyzing it or blowing up on it’s face seems to work..
Infernape is fast and can KO anything but Gyarados.. Ouch…However the opponent doesn’t know that! So this rarely does happen do to Blissey and Celebi running Thunder Wave and it can only switch in once something is dead.. But sometimes I actually have to take a chance of losing something and using Thunder Wave with Celebi/Blissey as it sets up so that it won’t sweep… Just have to keep in mind that he cannot set up or it’s game over. A straight out Mixed sweeper has trouble coming in and usually just Mach Punch it if it gets low enough…This is of course if Gyarados is dead. Gyarados is my only counter to this thing, and if he dies I have to rely on it’s LO to lower his health enough then Mach Punching it… Though I have never gotten swept by one.
Well, I’ve gotten swept by this thing a couple of times.. Who hasn’t though, am I right? Paralyzing it with Blissey and switching to Breloom/Celebi and it’s done.. However once it gets a couple of Calm Minds it’s Game Over specially if it’s running a lot of speed. But really Celebi can do enough damage even after one Calm Mind.. So it’ not nearly as bad as Dragonite/Infernape.
The Others:
Once it’s set up..Good game man. If not then Celebi handles it well, however it loses to Substitute Gyarados if I don’t have Psychic. Also Breloom is a sort of counter aswell if it doesn’t have Ice Fang/Bounce.
Switch into Blissey.. Done and easy. No Pain Split/Life Orb/Substitute/Focus Blast is not a Blissey counter… You will realize this once you run out of Focus Blasts.. Blissey can wall any Gengar set other than a Focus Punching one. I can just use random attacks to waste PP.. Gengar will switch out eventually.. It can’t switch into Blissey either.. Unless the person has God-Like prediction.
LOL… So sad that I have Blissey… Only worried of Tricksters, though those are obvious.
LOL… I actually smile whenever I see Starmie or Zapdos in the opposing team.. That just means I only have to deal with 5 Pokemon.. Blissey is so sweet.
Have to paralyze as soon as possible. If that is accomplished, he becomes a joke.. Though he is pretty tough to deal with if he has his speed.
Paralyze.. It needs to be slowed down. Celebi is a good initial counter specially if it’s not using Substitute.
Blissey and Heatran… Mostly Blissey. Once Paralyzed it becomes a joke. Can’t switch into Celebi.. At all.
Heatran and Blissey’s counter(though must use extreme caution). Celebi can HP Fire it. Gyarados is the initial switch in.
….LOL.. This is a joke. Blissey KO’s any ScarfTar(any attack). Dragon Dance gets beat by Breloom and Blissey can take a +1 Stone edge if necessary… Celebi laughs at it… Paralyze then KO by Leaf Storm… Free kill… That’s 3 free kills if you were wondering.
… 4 Free Kills.. Every single one of my team is able to beat it(except the lead.. which doesn’t need to.)
Guess that’s it.
It started about a year ago when I wanted to build the perfect OU team in my Platinum game. I started with my five favorite members and added and then took out the last member many times.
