OMG I got swept by Lapras (OU Rain)

Hey guys! Thanks for taking the time to see (and hopefully rate) my team. This is my first team on Smogon, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Rain is my favorite weather, and is my favorite playstyle after Trick Room (which sadly doesn't work out that much.) I wanted to base my team off a DDrest Lapras with Hydration. I've seen quite a bit of success with this team so far, though admittedly during my couple hours of testing I haven't really seen many of this tier's top threats. Since I'm still kinda new it any suggestions are appreciated.

Team Building Process

I wanted to base my team off DDRest Lapras, who is in my opinion a very underrated threat. Of course, to use her Hydration ability, I needed rain, which inevitably brought me to Politoed.

Next, I wanted a strong defensive core to use in the rain, and I decided to use Ferrothorn and Tentacruel. Both cover each other's weaknesses reasonably well, and have access to hazards and rapid spin, respectively.

Then, I wanted a strong attacker who could abuse the rain. I decided on Hurricane Volcarona, another uncommon set due to the nullification of his STAB fire moves. However, after a few Quiver Dances, he becomes a very big threat.

Finally, I needed a good revenge killer, preferably a dragon type with some power. I chose ScarfChomp over ScarfMence as Chomp is faster, and his STAB Earthquake really comes in handy a lot.

However, after some testing I saw my team being wrecked by boosting Fighting type pokemon, due to the fact that Tentacruel and Volcarona were my only resists, and with Volcarona being extremely frail I needed a bulkier resist to help. I settled on Dragonite, who can still abuse the rain due to access to both Hurricane and Thunder, as well as a great ability in Multiscale and reliable healing in Roost.

Lapras (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Hydration
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Rest
- Waterfall
- Ice Shard
Meet Lapras, the star of the team. She comes in on a wall and starts boosting. Because of her good HP stat and immunity to status, it's hard to shut her down one she gets going. She's swept teams pretty much every game that I've been able to get her in safely. DDance and Rest are self explanatory to abuse the rain. Waterfall is a great STAB that is boosted by rain, and also comes with a handy flinch chance. Ice Shard is a STAB priority move, which is nice since Lapras is still relatively slow after a boost. Unfortunately, this set is walled by opposing water types, so they need to be eliminated before she can set up and sweep.

Politoed (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Protect
- Perish Song
- Toxic
The rain inducer. I chose defensive Politoed because this gives it much more survivability, letting me win weathers wars. Scald does decent damage under rain, and has a good chance of burn, shutting down physical threats. Protect gives me a free turn of leftovers recovery, as well as scouting the opponent. Perish Song lets me force out opposing boosters, and is carried by baton pass as well. Finally, Toxic lets me spread poison against pokes that don't mind a burn.

I'm considering changing him to a Specs Toad, though, since right now the only real damage dealers are Lapras and Garchomp, and I don't really want my team to be that defensive. Specs Toad is also not that common, and can catch opponents who think they have set-up bait off guard.

628.png

Ferrothorn (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Iron Barbs
Evs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Thunder Wave
- Power Whip
Ferrothorn is a great defensive pokemon under rain, as it mitigates his 4x Fire weakness. He is my hazard setter, and can cripple common threats on the switch with Thunder Wave, or set up Leech Seed and stall with Leftovers recovery. Power Whip prevents him from becoming useless under taunt, and does decent damage to opposing Water and Ground types.

73.png

Tentacruel (F) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Rapid Spin
- Toxic
- Protect
I've always liked this jellyfish. Under rain, she has great recovery from Rain Dish, and has good utility as a spinner. She also absorbs Toxic Spikes, which while not all that common is still great. Scald is used for the burn chance, discouraging physical attackers from switching in. Rapid spin spins away hazards, especially Stealth Rock, which does nasty damage to Lapras. Toxic lets it defeat common spinblockers under rain (bar Gengar) and deals with pokes that don't mind burn. Finally, Protect is run to ensure a free turn of Black Sludge + Rain Dish healing.

149.png

Dragonite (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Calm Nature
- Hurricane
- Dragon Tail
- Thunder
- Roost
The veteran dragon from RBY, Dragonite's new ability Multiscale greatly improves his already impressive bulk. The set I run abuses the rain while allowing him to phaze opposing boosters. Hurricane is a STAB 120 base power move with 100% accuracy under rain. It also comes with 30% confusion, which is nice. Dragon Tail lets me phaze boosters while dealing some damage. Thunder is another 120 base power 100% accuracy move under rain, and has a 30% paralysis chance, letting him potentially shut down faster threats. Finally, Roost greatly extends him longevity, lowering his 4x Ice weakness as well as restoring Multiscale.

450.png

Garchomp (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Stone Edge
- Aqua Tail
Arguably one of the best scarfers, the former Uber joins the team. Chomp provides an electric immunity, something that helps out the waters on my team greatly. With his high speed and attack he can effectively revenge most pokemon with ease. Earthquake is a great STAB move that hits most pokemon for good damage. Dragon Claw is chosen over Outrage since I dislike the lock, but the power drop is noticeable. Stone Edge finished the EdgeQuake combo and hits flying types hard, while Aqua Tail gains pseudoSTAB under the rain.

Well, here's my team. Thanks for taking the time to read it. Any comments/suggestions are welcomed, as since it's my first team there's bound to be ways to improve. Hope you liked it!

Ok the only thing which I would recommend is replacing chomp, for mamoswine. He to gets STAB earthquake and gets stone edge, however he isn't a dragon.

The reason for this change is because chomp is your only electric immunity. However most pokemon with electric moves also carry an ice move of some kind which will cause a lot of damage. I would recommend the standard jolly mamoswine. However as I don't have much experience with mamo I can't recommend anything else. Also due to typing he takes neutral damage from ice moves which is far better

Hey Raguu, cute idea to use Lapras, I will try to change the team without distorting it too much.
Start by saying that you seem frighteningly weak Thundurus-T, I might advise you to enter Mamoswine but this would only increase your weakness to Terrakion which is already quite urgent for this team, ultimately you should include scarfed Latios instead of Garchomp (below will place the set).
You could then put a Curse Lapras instead of Dragon Dance, so something you will always exceed in speed and so I guess it's better boost to the defense.
Ok now it seems to me, however, that Trick Room Reuniclus devastate you, then would insert a jirachi in place of Ferrothorn, so performs the same functions (the square stealth rock, spams paralysis random indeed this also to the ground, you lose only the leach seed, however, gains a wish for the whole team).

381.gif

Latios (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Surf / Thunder
- Trick

385.gif

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 236 SDef / 20 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Body Slam
- Iron Head
- Wish
- Stealth Rock

Have you bumped into many landorus? It hits your whole team super effective with it's three most common attacks(besides politoad) w/ hidden power (ice)/focus blast/earth power. Maybe try out rotom-w over dragonite if you have to have a thunder spammer.

rotom-w@leftovers
levitate
Timid 252hp 252spe
volt switch
thunder/thunderbolt
hydro pump
hidden power(ice)/will o wisp/ pain split

Worth a try in my opinion.

This team is good lol, but there is one thing that i would change. I would give Garchomp a Jolly nature instead of an Adamant. Because, with a jolly nature, you will able to outspeed Choice Scarf Salamence which is really common and you don't want him outspeeding you.

Also, you need a reliable special attacker. I reccomend you using a SpecsToad, and you should use one. I mean he hits hard and can basically OKO and 2KO anything in the rain!

186politoed.gif

Politoed
Ability=Drizzle @Choice Specs
Modest (EVs: 252 HP/ 252 SPATK/4 Spe)

-Ice Beam
-Focus Blast
-Hidden Power Grass

(lol, too lazy for description)

One Mach Punch on your Lapras and it's dead - and there's quite a few of them (Conkeldurr and Breloom spring to mind). It's too fragile to be used IMO, and also a prankster taunt from Tornadus has it completely shot too.

252+ Atk Life Orb Conkeldurr Mach Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Lapras: 242-283 (60.19 - 70.39%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Mach Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Lapras: 307-367 (76.36 - 91.29%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

You were saying?

Lapras will outspeed both Conkeldurr and Breloom after a Dragon Dance, 2HKO the former with Waterfall + Ice Shard and the latter with two Ice Shards, and still have plenty of Speed to Rest off the damage.

I like the team so far, but I would say get rid of Garchomp as most people have been recommending. I would also tend to agree that Mamoswine would be a good replacement as his weakness to fire is reduced while rain is up. You would need to be wary of fighting moves as everyone pointed out which is why I would suggest replacing Tentacruel with Jellicent and Ferrothorn with Forretress. In my opinion, Forretress is a better Rapid Spinner than Tentacruel is and is capable of running pretty good sets under rain. His Bug/Steel typing is also better than Ferrothorn's Grass/Steel typing. I think Jirachi in Ferrothorn's place would also be a strong contender and something definitely worth trying or considering.

I would reccomend these sets:

Forretress @ Leftovers
Sturdy, Relaxed Nature
252 HP, 252 Def, 4 SpD
1. Rapid Spin
2. Stealth Rock
3. Volt Switch
4. HP Ice

Jellicent @ Leftovers
Water Absorb, Calm Nature
252 HP, 36 Def, 220 SpD
1. Scald
2. Recover
3. Will-O-Wisp/Toxic
4. Taunt

Having Jellicent allows you to have a special wall, rapid spin blocker, water absorber and a switch in on Fightnig-type moves to help mitigate the weaknesses your team has to Conkeldurr and Breloom. Forretress could also run Pain Split in place of HP Ice to add a more reliable recovery utility.

I hope these suggestions helped, best of luck :)

Thanks all for the rates! These suggestions are looking good, I haven't had much time to test them yet but I definitely will in the future.

I'll definitely try this out! My only concern is that then I get a big rock/fighting weakness, but I can probably fix that by switching some more pokes.

Scarf Latios is great! I've tested a little with him, and never looked back. I will still try out Mamoswine, though.
I've done a little bit of testing with Jirachi, and it definitely seems to be doing some good. Will update after I get more time to finish testing.
I've also tried CursePras, but the lack of speed really hurts against strong special attackers. I'll test it out though.

I considered this while making the team, but he doesn't seem as bulky as dnite. I'll still try him out though, since he does do quite a lot a damage.

Yeah, I generally use specs toed on my other rain teams but I wanted perish song to mess up baton pass teams. I'll consider this though, and update after testing.

I'm not that bug of a fan of forretress, but he does have good utility and the rain helps. He's also not weak to fighting, which is a plus. I'll test him out and see how it goes.
Jellicent also seems a solid choice, his immunity to fighting looks very appealing. I'll test him out as well.

Once again, thanks all for the rates! I really appreciate it!.
