Introduction: So I broke into the 4th generation very late, only buying SoulSilver 2 days ago and beginning Pokemon Online a week ago. I am not new to competitive pokemon battling however, as I was an active netbattle competitor for about 2 years, competing against the best of them in 3rd generation OU, UU, NU and Ubers.
Preview: Before I began team building, my objective was to create a strong, solid stall team with no weaknesses. To reach my objective, I'm posting this team for observation so I can improve it based on the advice I receive.
Empoleon (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Torrent
EVs: 156 HP / 100 Spd / 252 SAtk
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Grass Knot
- Stealth Rock
- Ice Beam
I've been told this is a good starter and from using it I see why. It scares away many starter pokemon, begins the switch-in nightmare I plan to build on with stealth rock and works well in conjunction with the other pokemon on my team. Hydro pump is just a very effective STAB move, grass knot allows empoleon to counter many water pokemon and ice beam scares away salamence.
Skarmory (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Keen Eye
EVs: 252 HP / 64 Atk / 192 Def
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Brave Bird
- Spikes
- Roost
- Whirlwind
The quintessential defensive wall, skarmory may have took a step down from the beast it was in 3rd and 2nd generations but still serves as a crucial component of many teams in the 4th generation. Brave bird helps it counter celebi and is a great attack move for an otherwise- defensive-oriented pokemon. Spikes adds on to the switch-in nightmare I'm building with empoleon and whirlwind keeps shuffling and shuffling the opposing team to the hazardous terrain I set up.
Claydol @ Light Clay
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 80 Def / 176 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Light Screen
- Rapid Spin
- Psychic
- Earth Power
So apparently claydol is an UnderUsed pokemon this generation. Nevertheless I still see it as an effective pokemon. Light screen, boosted with light clay allows my team to withstand the attacks of many powerful sp. attackers. Rapid spin gets the annoying shit of my side which pokemon like skarmory and forretress lay down. Psychic and Earth Power are just STABoosted attacks I attached on. I didn't really see the need for rest because Claydol just gets his shit done and gets out of the way.
Regice @ Leftovers
Trait: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- ThunderBolt
- Ice Beam
Long story short, I don't want that bitch Blissey on my team. Rest, Sleep Talk and Claydol's light screen allow Regice to still function as an effective-wall in this hot, hot environment of D/P. Thunderbolt fucks up water/flying pokemon, ice beam fucks up salamence, dragonite, flygon and all the stupid fucks flying around in D/P. The obvious, popular, potent special-attacker destroying OU teams in D/P that Regice doesn't counter is Heatran. And my last pokemon will have an answer towards him =].
Gengar (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Spd / 252 SAtk
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Shadow Ball
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Focus Blast
- Trick
What can I say? I'm an Emerald/Rubby/Saphire junky. Gengar blocks rapid spin, which is a necessity for my team. I chose not to go for dusknoir or all the other defense-focused ghosts of D/P because I lack sweepers or in general just need a fast pokemon. This shit will help me clean shit out after I weaken my opponent's (BAN ME PLEASE) team with spikes and stealth rock and all that shit. Shadow ball for STAB, HP ice to scare that (BAN ME PLEASE) salamence the fuck away, focus blast to get that fat bitch blissey and trick just to fuck up a pokemon like heracross with an item it doesn't need.
Suicune @ Leftovers
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Rest
- Calm Mind
- Roar
- Ice Beam
I love Suicune to death, I want to fuck this water-constituted lion to death. It may be a little lack-luster in this gay ass generation but it gets shit done. Rest for obvious recovery, calm mind to set it up as the giant tank that it's destined to be, roar to fuck the pokemon up when I lay down the spikes and stealth rock and all the other shit and ice beam to clean shit up. This is also a nice counter against heatran and attack-oriented salamence.
