The STABmons council has decided to suspect test Walking Wake!

Why:
With an unanimous 5-0 council vote, the STABmons council has decided to suspect test Walking Wake! Ever since its first introduction, Walking Wake has been a controversial figure, having been banned two times before, only being freed again after the Terastallization ban in May last year. The combination of its great typing, giving access to powerful moves such as Steam Eruption, Clanging Scales, Water Spout, and Water Shuriken in tandem with its powerful Special Attack stat has left few things being able to withstand Choice Specs sets, not to mention Choice Scarf sets still dealing ludicrous amounts of damage while also being able to blitz past non-scarfed offensive checks. Even substitute sets with Knock Off + Leftovers have seen success, being able to greatly annoy more passive checks like Assault Vest Toxapex. It's already great typing also grants it resistances to common priority moves in Jet Punch and Water Shuriken as well as a neutrality to Thunderclap, making it hard to handle offensively too. And on top of all this it has access to the aformentioned Knock Off and Flip Turn too, letting it further break down checks like RegenVest Toxapex and Slowking or pivot out for momentun, respectively.

Despite all these terrifying traits, there are still some flaws. Walking Wake faces heavy competition with Latios as a special Dragon-type wallbreaker or Speed control, as Latios has both higher Special Attack and Speed, meaning that Scarfed sets get outpaced and disposed of. While few, there are still Pokemon that are immune to its respective STABs in Volcanion and Clodsire for Water and Fairy-types like Sylveon and Iron Valiant for Dragon, making choiced sets a bit prediciton-reliant at times.

Suspect details:
Create a new account on PS. You do not have to follow any specific naming convention, but your suspect account must have never played a game in STABmons before this suspect test went up or you will not receive valid requirements (resetting W/L does not count for this - the account you use must never have played STABmons before the test, full stop.)
At any point on your new account, use the command /linksmogon on Pokemon Showdown! You will receive instructions on what to do once you run this command.

Double check that you're listed as a voter here! If you aren't listed as a voter despite having valid reqs, please contact KaenSoul, Giagantic, Dhelmise or a member of staff. If you have any questions about this new process, feel free to PM me or post here!

The requirement to vote in this suspect test is a COIL value of 2850 with a b value of 3. The deadline for getting requirements will be <t:1744001940:f>

Voting:

Once the suspect period is over, everyone who has obtained reqs will be tagged. The post will then outline a process of blind voting, which will be clarified once the time arrives. For now, follow the above "Requirements" subheading to ensure that you have achieved requirements and linked your account

A super-majority of 60% ban votes is required to ban Walking Wake from STABmons.

Big thanks to Slither Wing for this post's write up!

Probably going to vote dnb when the suspect ends. Wake is a good mon, but that's really all it is, especially now that denergy is banned. There's both a few reliable switchins like clod, slowking, and vest pex and also plenty of immunities and resists that might die to the other coverage but still really annoy it. The speed tier being slower that latios really keeps the sub knock sets under control, and that's the only set I've ever really felt was broken.

Got reqs fairly easily, unfortunately since I'm a beta (I don't wanna build that many STABmons teams) I will not be sharing but any form of offense gets you pretty far here. My thoughts kind of remain the same as from my post in the beginning of the month but tldr; defensive teams cry over it's existence and while I'd love for it and Water Shuriken (No seriously fuck this move) to be banned aswell to truly fix the tier I think banning Wake is a step in the right direction. Unless of course we wanna finally embrace the whole "STAB is a very offense-leaning tier", but most people seem to not want that

(Shoutout cat for joining me despite the fact that she should be asleep by the time this gets posted)

hi i got reqs (after sylvi threatened me that he was gonna vote ban if I didn't...). anyways, I think that this suspect is obscenely silly and I will be voting DNB as wake actively improves the meta more than it harms it. Firstly it is NOT that hard to deal with. there's a plethora of mons that beat it offensively or defensively and one of the good points abt wake is that it punishes bad/lazy teambuilding, here is a BRIEF list of some mons on the VR with a good mu into specs/subknock/boots wake

image-2025-04-06-162623505.png

These are all top meta mons or mons with the niche of "I am good into wake and X other mon", they are not bad to put on your team.

Wake is fantastic for the meta because it is so good into a lot of the high viability / most common mons used, and it punishes "lazy teambuilding" (using tingpexcorv as ur defensive core all the time, relying on water shuriken washtom or scarf dengo as ur fast mon on teams etc). IT also promotes innovative teambuilding as it does so much in one slot, threatening out mons like ting-lu, lando etc, being a water-type overwhelms pex, a strong breaker and a solid answer into cheese strats like sub volcanion and np washtom that is easy to slap onto teams. Seeing stuff like specs wake on sub or sub 3a wake pop up in tour makes me so happy because it means people are finally experimenting with this tier and leaning away from spamming the standard strats that ruled for so long.

Banning wake would sincerely be a mistake IMO, go suspect an actually unfair mon or move like water shuriken or zama
