ORAS CAP Metagame Speculation Thread

Now that the Plasmanta playtest is finally underway, it's time for us to look forward and try to expect what's to come once Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are released. Piggybacking on the conversations that the OU community is having, we'll be discussing how the new Mega Pokémon will affect the metagame. Something very important to keep in mind is that the 19 additions to OU that we have will change how well individual Megas will perform. Some may be completely walled and outclassed, while others may find a new battleground full of easy pickings. Without further ado, these are the new Mega Pokémon being added to OU.

Just wanna say that these new megas are up on the simulator and can be played with in custom games. Therefore, I welcome everyone interested to try them out on their CAP teams and see how it goes. After all, the CAP ladder is also down, so Customs is also the only way to use Capmons for the time being as well.

Replay power always helps arguments :)

IMO Mega Diancie looks pretty interesting, its not exact as powerful as Mega Gardevoir, it does make a great answer to Tomohawk, (It almost always KOs it with a Special Nature and Tomo can only 3HKO it) it can run a CroCune like set with Moonblast (Its not the bulkiest thing in the world but it has enough to manage), and it can run a nice mixed set with Moonblast/Diamond Storm/Earth Power, I'm definitely trying it out, it doesn't really like Colosoil though.

Bar Salamence, I can see Mega Altaria, Metagross, and Beedrill doing the most. Altaria can easily run either Physical, Mixed, or Special sets, and be able to get an easy sweep with any of them. It can hurt the Trinity (Tomohawk, Colossoil, Cyclohm) very easily with STAB, and boost itself to a sweep whenever Hazers and Phazers are gone. Metagross again is extremely Physically strong, and resists Tomohawk's main STAB. Bullet Punch gets a pseudo-Technician boost with Tough Claws, as do all of the elemental punches it gets. Lastly, Beedrill is just incredibly fast and powerful. Once Tomohawk is taken care of, it can outspeed literally the entire meta so long as they aren't Choice Scarfed.

If you ask me, the Pokemon that individually will cause the biggest disruption in the current metagame is not Mega Salamence (as will likely be the case in OU), but Mega Altaria. Its typing, while already awesome, is especially fantastic in the CAP metagame. It can find ample opportunities to set up a Dragon Dance, and one it does, the top physical walls in the game fall easily. It also has good bulk, meaning it is not exactly easy to wear down. With that said, I don't think Altaria is going to be the best new Pokemon in the metagame, just the one that forces the most change. It can certainly be handled by some Pokemon not as commonly seen in the current CAP metagame, and its overall offensive prowess is nothing ridiculous.

Some other Megas I think will have impacts on the metagame are Diancie and Gallade. Diancie sits at a very nice speed tier, and has that Fairy STAB that is so awesome in this metagame. Its main issue is Chansey, who doesn't take enough from 4 Atk Diamond Storm. While Magic Bounce prevents Chansey from statusing it, Seismic Toss will quickly handle it. Beyond Chansey though, Diancie will do a ton of damage to most Pokemon. Moonblast + Earth Power is such fantastic coverage. While The Pizza Man mentioned that Colossoil gives it trouble, I wouldn't really say that is the case. It outspeeds, takes minimal from Sucker Punch, and OHKOs any common set not using an Assault Vest. Even AV sets are easily 2HKOd, meaning they can never switch in.

Gallade on the other hand is a different twist on what we have been seeing for a while from Mega Medicham. While it certainly does not pack the same punch right out of the gate, its better speed + Swords Dance makes it a much more deadly sweeper. It won't be doing much new, but the job of a Physical attacker that can cleanly break Tomohawk over its knee is always appreciated in this metagame, and while it is only one of many new megas that fit that bill, it packs the most punch of any of them.

I also want to put a special mention out there for Mega Glalie. While I do not think it will become a metagame staple, it will be really cool to use on occasion due to how well it will be able to blow holes in stall teams. Ice is a great attacking type, and Return will punch holes in a ton of mons. However, the real utility is that Explosion, which is like a one time die button. You absolutely need a resist to take the hit, no matter how bulky you are (it cleanly KOs max/max+ Tomo through Reflect). Its not going to be a staple, thanks to its terrible defensive typing, mediocre stats, and lack of good coverage, but it has a niche role that certain teams will definitely appreciate.
